Chapter 1

مؤلف: alone
Through the window, I saw two silhouettes locking in an embrace under the moonlight.

The bitterness in the air choked the breath out of my lungs.

Her shoulders flinching, Gwen Forrest said in anguish, “Harris, this has to end now.”

She looked up with tearful eyes and pulled a wry smile. “Soon, I’ll complete the mating ceremony granted by the Moon Goddess. It’s time you held yours with Grace.

“You’re all Grace has left.

“Ever since we lost our parents, my only concern is Grace.”

Harris Light kept his head down in silence. Moments later, his voice was raspy. “I can’t do it.

“Don’t make me, Gwen. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.”

Leaning against the cold wall, I sank to the floor, a crushing weight falling on my chest.

Since Gwen and Harris had always kept their distance, I had never linked them together. I thought I was the only reason they ever interacted.

Flashbacks of the past few years played in my mind.

Every year, as soon as the Winter Hunt ended, Harris would show up at my doorstep with presents.

He’d greet Gwen respectfully, but the latter would always stay far away. Gwen simply replied, “Welcome back.”

That was the end of their exchange.

I had always assumed that Gwen couldn’t stand him.

My mind drifted back to the look on Gwen’s face when Harris walked away. There was something in her eyes I'd never seen before.

Now, I finally knew what it was.

Harris was still pleading with Gwen, desperate to change her mind.

Steeling her heart, Gwen pushed Harris away. “From this day forth, we are strangers to one another.”

Harris snapped and smashed his fist into the wall. However, he seemed numb to the pain.

His eyes were bloodshot. “No! I’ll take you away from here! We can go to a place where no one can tear us apart. I don’t care about being the Alpha heir. I just want to be with you.”

Gwen recoiled, the tenderness in her eyes fading.

“Harris.” Her voice was barely a whisper but firm. “I can’t do that…

“Grace is my only sister. If she gets hurt because of this, you’ll never see me again.”

The air went still.

Harris went rigid. His hand clutching Gwen dropped limply, and it took a long while before he let out a dry chuckle.

He met Gwen’s gaze and said bitterly, “I surrender. I’ll do what you want and take Grace as my mate. I’ll love and protect her for the rest of my life.”

The thick bitterness hung between them, suffocating the room.

I closed my eyes and smiled mockingly.

Staggering away from the lounge, I didn’t have to wait long for Harris’ return.

“What happened, Grace? Why are you crying?” He looked at me with concern and reached out to brush the tears from my cheeks.

I shied away from his touch and uttered, “I’m fine.”

He didn’t press further.

The lights in the Moon Temple dimmed, and every wolf in the hall turned their attention to the altar.

An elder’s voice boomed through the hall. “Gwen and Ryan, please step forward to receive the Moon Goddess’ blessing.”

Draped in a silver-white gown, Gwen approached holding a bouquet.

She glanced at me, and then her gaze fell on Harris.

For a brief second, I sniffed the intense bitterness once more.

Sitting next to me, Harris clenched his fist and tried desperately to keep his emotions in check.

Apart from Ryan, Gwen’s soon-to-be mate, I caught no hint of sweetness in the air.

Gwen and Ryan exchanged mating vows to never be parted.

At the end of the ritual, the elder handed over the microphone. “May Grace, Gwen’s only sister, step up to share her blessings.”

I was about to take the microphone when Harris, who had held his silence so far, stood up ahead of me and snatched the microphone.

Harris held me tight, his voice trembling. He leaned down and whispered, “I finally found you, Grace. I knew you’d be here. I promised I would come here with you.“You still love me, don’t you? I can explain everything.” Though I picked up on the sweet scent of his emotions, I broke free from his embrace with a sneer. I couldn’t stand to be close to him. A werewolf who had pined after Gwen all these years suddenly loved me when I was gone. It was the most absurd thing ever. I said icily, “Harris, are you here to prove how well you know me? You make me sick.’ He lowered his gaze to hide his hurt expression before murmuring a soft sorry. Harris uttered, “Grace, time changes our feelings. I admit that being with you before was to get close to Gwen, and I admit I misled and lied to you back then, but now I truly love you.”I grinned and looked him in the eye before asking, “Do you know how I found out about you and Gwen? “I can smell the scent of emotions once I had my wo

Harris roamed the streets aimlessly, passing by our former Werewolf Academy. It struck him that it was true that Gwen caught his eye right there and then. I barely left an impression even though we shared a classroom. Harris realized that the Forrest sisters had gotten the wrong idea when I told him how I felt. He wanted to turn me down, but by doing so, Harris would have no reason to stay by Gwen’s side. Staring at the smile on my face, he nodded and went along with it. As years went by, my presence meant more to him. He sat alone outside the academy gates, his eyes fixed on the entrance. It was as though he could still see the shadow of me running out from the academy gates, just to tell him that I had feelings for him. His heart had always belonged to me, while Gwen was simply the one that got away. It was dark by the time Harris returned to the manor he shared with me. The estate was filled with traces of my life, filling him with an aching longing. Harris dro

The pack members arrived at the venue one after another. It took an eternity before Harris walked out of the bedroom. He got into the car, not sparing Gwen a glance throughout. Gwen trailed behind Harris, desperate to get some assurance, but the words were lost on her. After a long pause, Gwen broke the silence. “What do you plan to do?” Harris’ voice was hoarse. “Tell the pack that there was an emergency. I’ll apologize for taking up their time.” Gwen was on board with the idea. She didn’t want the truth to get out, knowing how dirty it was. However, they were being far too optimistic. The mating ceremony drew wolves from every corner of the territory. Some had even traveled from neighboring packs just to witness the event.Yet when they arrived, the ceremony venue was eerily empty. The place had not been set up. Angry murmurs spread through the crowd. One of the pack members called the hotel that had been handling the ceremony arrangements, demanding an explana

His heart clenched, and his eyes flashed crimson as Harris fought to stay in control.Holding his phone, Harris kept trying my number. Only then did he realize he had memorized my number by heart. For years, he had trouble remembering my number. Harris pulled himself together. There was no denying one fact. He had fallen in love with me long ago. However, it took until now to recognize the truth. “Grace, I can explain everything. Please answer the phone. “It’s our mating ceremony today. Where are you? I’ll wait for you.“Grace, I was blind not to see that I’ve been in love with you for so long. Through every moment we shared, I know beyond doubt that I love you.” He poured his heart out into his messages to me, but all he received was silence in return. The Grace of the past would’ve responded in less than a minute. The sparkle in Harris’ eyes dimmed with time. He bet I had chosen not to reply to him. In the bedroom, Harris buried his face into his palms and

Harris paced back and forth in his hotel room, his excitement bubbling over night before the ceremony. His heart raced at the thought of his mating ceremony tomorrow, and that fact caught him by surprise. Harris had always thought that he only cared for me because I was Gwen’s sister. However, his heartbeat gave him the answer. His stomach was in knots, both from anticipation and nerves, as he would stand before me at our mating ceremony. Speaking of which, Harris unlocked his phone, scrolled through his history with Gwen, and deleted every last bit of their interaction. Now that his mind was made up, he would devote himself to me. Gwen was nothing more than family to him. Nevertheless, Harris dialed Gwen’s number one last time to say his final goodbye. He told Gwen, “I’ll be mating with Grace tomorrow. I’m staying somewhere else tonight, but I’ll see her at the ceremony tomorrow.” Gwen murmured, “Promise me to treat Grace right. We can’t have any contact from here

Three days later, Ryan finished wrapping up his pack duties and showed up at our door with Gwen.Since I moved in with Harris, Gwen had been coming to our house to visit me.Gwen hugged me the moment she saw me. “Our Grace will be holding her mating ceremony soon. I can’t wait to witness you and Harris bonding as mates.”I asked out of the blue, “Are you honestly happy, Gwen?” Startled at first, Gwen then ran her fingers down my hair with a smile. “I couldn’t be happier to see you together with the mate.” She went to the kitchen. “I should check on Harris and see what he’s cooking up for us.” In truth, Harris had a meeting with an important Alpha to talk business, but I heard him push the appointment back on the phone. He claimed he had an important guest to host. It was all for Gwen. At the dinner table, Gwen sat far away from Harris. The latter said, “Grace told me that you were fond of salad, so I made you some. Try it.” I listened intently. Every word that came
