Chapter 4

Author: Pen Everly
On the last day of their trip, the family group chat suddenly became lively.

Ryan sent a long voice message.

“Lily, our flight gets back tomorrow night.

“Go to Ravenport tomorrow.

“Rent a two-bedroom apartment near Chloe’s school.

“Chloe isn’t in the best health, so she won’t be comfortable living in a dorm. Go there ahead of time and clean the place up.

“And take your things with you while you’re at it.”

I played the voice message and listened to it without expression before setting my phone down.

They were certain I’d go to Ravenport.

Because Callum was attending college there.

Because Chloe’s exam scores had barely been enough to get her into a local college.

In their eyes, I was a useless girl who could only get into a two-year college. My only value was going to Ravenport to play housekeeper for Chloe.

And, of course, to keep following Callum around like a lovesick shadow.

Mom sent another message.

“Lily, since you’ve enrolled at a community college in Ravenport, you’ll need to take care of Chloe and Callum.

“The family will cover the rent. You’ll have to earn your own spending money through a part-time job.

“You’re eighteen now. It’s time you learned to be independent.”

Independent.

What a noble-sounding word.

At eighteen, Chloe needed the entire family to revolve around her. She needed a beach vacation to clear her head and an apartment of her own.

At eighteen, I was expected to pay for my own living expenses through a part-time job while taking care of them.

I didn’t reply to the messages in the group chat.

I simply put my phone on silent.

My room was already empty.

Apart from the bed and a battered wardrobe, nothing remained.

The few traces of me that had existed in that room were gone.

I packed my toiletries into my backpack and zipped it shut.

A plane ticket sat on the desk.

A one-way ticket to Westbridge City.

The flight was at ten tomorrow morning.

Perfectly timed to leave before they returned that evening.

I looked around the home where I’d lived for three years.

I didn’t feel the slightest bit reluctant to leave.

That night, I cleaned the house one last time.

I prepared the broth in the refrigerator.

I put a fresh dust cover over Chloe’s bed.

Everything was left exactly as they’d wanted it.

Perfect.

The next morning, before dawn had fully broken, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and quietly closed the front door behind me.

The morning air was cool.

I walked to the entrance of the neighborhood and hailed a cab.

“Airport, please.”

As I sat in the back seat, watching the streets slide past the window, I felt calmer than I ever had before.

My phone lit up.

It was a private message from Callum.

“Lily, did you find the apartment?

“Pick somewhere close to my school. It’ll be easier for me to come see you two.”

I stared at the message and suddenly found it almost amusing.

Come see us?

He meant Chloe.

And maybe he’d spare me a little pitying attention while he was there.

I opened his profile and deleted his contact.

Then I deleted Mom, Dad, Ryan, and Chloe.

I blocked every contact connected to that family.

Then I removed my SIM card, snapped it in half, and tossed it out the car window.

When I arrived at the airport, I checked my luggage and made it through security without a hitch.

I sat in the departure lounge, watching the flight information scroll across the massive screen.

A gentle female voice came over the speakers.

“Passengers traveling to Westbridge City, please be advised that boarding is now underway…”

I stood up and walked toward the gate.

Goodbye to all the favoritism and all the hurt.

Goodbye to the Lily who was always the one left behind.

From today on, I belonged only to myself.

After the conference ended, they stopped me in the hotel lobby.“Lily…”Mom called my name in a trembling voice and reached out to grab me.I stepped back, avoiding her touch. My expression was cold, devoid of warmth.“Excuse me, do we know each other?”Mom’s hand froze in midair as tears streamed down her face.“Lily, I’m your mother…“Where have you been these past three years? I’ve missed you so much.“We know we were wrong. Please forgive us. Come home with us.”Ryan stepped forward, his eyes red.“Lily, I was an asshole to you. I’m sorry.“Chloe has been sent overseas. You’re the only daughter left in the family now.“Come home. From now on, I’ll do whatever you want.”Dad stood nearby without saying a word, but his eyes were filled with desperation.Watching them cry in front of me, I found the whole thing absurd.“Come home?”I let out a soft laugh, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather.“Three years ago, when I left that house, I stopped havi

Three years later, winter in Westbridge City was bitterly cold, with heavy snow blanketing the city.I sat by the laboratory window, staring at the endless stretch of white outside while holding a cup of hot coffee. The past three years had been good to me.I had received a full scholarship, worked on my advisor’s core research project, and even published two papers in prestigious academic journals.I was no longer the Lily Whitmore who had once lived cautiously in a cramped storage room, constantly watching everyone else's moods.I was now my advisor’s star student, the academic prodigy everyone in my program knew could handle anything. My phone buzzed.A text had come from an unknown number back home.“Lily, it’s snowing in Ravenport. When are you coming back?”It was already the nine-hundred-and-ninety-ninth message like this I had received that month.I didn’t need to guess who it was.Callum.Somehow, over the past three years, he had gotten hold of my new number.Eve

Callum had no idea how he made it back to Ravenport. He locked himself inside his apartment and didn’t leave for three whole days. His mind was filled with Mrs. Parker’s accusations and the note I had left behind.“Callum is the best person in the whole world…”The words played over and over in his mind like a curse. He had once been my light. But later, he had taken that light away from me and given it to Chloe. He thought back to the night before they left for the beach. He had watched as I was left behind. He had watched my suitcase being handed over to Chloe. He had clearly seen the disappointment in my eyes, yet he had still calmly told me,“Be understanding.”He had thought I was just throwing a little tantrum. He had thought that once he came back and sweet-talked me a little, I would forgive him just like I always had.Because I had always been so obedient, so easy to appease. But he had forgotten that even the most obedient person could die inside once their hea

Over the next few days, the Whitmore family was plunged into an unprecedented gloom.Rachel spent night after night unable to sleep, often finding herself standing unconsciously in the empty storage room that had once been Lily’s bedroom.Ryan stopped mentioning anything about me renting a place in Ravenport.Callum, meanwhile, seemed to be going crazy. He used every connection he had to track down the flight records from the past few days. But he found nothing.I had left too decisively, cutting off every possible trail they could use to track me down.“This won’t do. I’m going to the countryside and ask the neighbors.”David finally couldn’t sit still any longer.“Getting all the paperwork done to study abroad is complicated. Someone must have helped her.”That weekend, the entire family, along with Callum, drove back to the countryside. It was the first time in three years that any of them had set foot in the place where I had spent fifteen years of my life. The crumbling

“Not going to Ravenport? Then where could she possibly go?”Ryan scoffed dismissively.“She could barely get into a community college. She doesn’t have much money, either.“Other than going to Ravenport and expecting us to support her, where else could she go? Is she planning to fly to the moon?”Mom nodded, sounding certain.“She’s obviously just throwing a tantrum.“She probably changed her number on purpose to make us worry.“Leave her alone. Let her go hungry for a few days, and she’ll come crawling back on her own.”Chloe bit her lower lip, her eyes turning red again.“This is all my fault…“If I hadn’t insisted on going to the beach, Lily wouldn’t be this angry.“Dad, why don’t you call Lily’s homeroom teacher and ask?“What if something really happened to her?”Dad frowned.Although he had insisted that they shouldn’t bother with her, he still pulled out his phone. He called Lily’s homeroom teacher. The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered.

At eight that evening, the front door of the Hayes family home swung open.Ryan walked in first, pushing two large suitcases.“Finally home. I’m exhausted.”He tossed the suitcases by the entryway and slipped on his house shoes.Mom and Dad followed, helping Chloe inside.Callum came in last, carrying several shopping bags.“Lily!”Ryan called out.“Where are you? Come pour some water. Chloe’s thirsty.”The house was eerily quiet. No one answered.Mom frowned.“Where did that girl run off to this time?“Didn’t we tell her to go to Ravenport and rent an apartment ahead of us? Why hasn’t she even sent us a message?”Chloe sank onto the couch, looking pale.“Mom, is Lily mad at me?“Because I lost her bracelet…“If she’s really angry, I’ll buy her another one tomorrow to make it up to her.”Dad patted her shoulder.“Don’t worry about her. She’s always been stubborn, just like her grandmother.“When she runs out of money in a few days, she’ll come crawling back and apol
