ALEXEI’S POV.
“You’ll never be alpha of Ash moon pack, you wolfless weakling,” luna Mya spat the words at me with a rage I felt all the way down to my toes. Her words were laced with venom, causing me to reel backwards from the force of her hatred.
We were both in the hallway of the newly built church.
Father’s corpse was barely cold in its casket yet my step-mother was already trying to find a way to rip me off of everything that father had passed over to me – everything that was rightfully mine.
Ever since my mother had died, father had hardly looked at any she-wolves. It didn’t matter that they were trying to sink their claws into him. He was interested. But then, one day, when I was twelve years old, he had come home with a wolf with goddess like features.
Mya.
She was the total opposite of my mother, the late luna. She had an annoying habit of latching unto father’s arm like a piece of badly chewed gum.
Father had introduced Mya to me as his chosen mate. A week later, they were mated.
At first, luna Mya had pretended to like me but over time, it became quite apparent that she favoured her daughter, Freida, over me. It didn’t matter though. I barely cared that I was loathed by my step mother. In truth, the feeling was incredibly mutual.
With father dead, she finally felt comfortable enough to reveal her true colours to me.
It was why she felt emboldened enough to pull me into the hallway and try to intimidate me.
“Your father, may the moon goddess bless his soul, he made a terrible mistake naming you as the next alpha of Ash moon pack.”
“Really?” I sneered at her, barely refraining myself from lashing out at her. “And why is that?”
“You must be really dumb if you truly want me to spell out to you the fact that you’re weak, pathetic and wolfless.”
She scoffed in indignation, pointing an accusing finger at me. “What could a worthless semi lycan like you know about running a pack?”
I pursed my lips, as I allowed her words to sink in.
Her words hurt. They were like shards of ice on my skin.
“I’m sorry I’m such a source of disappointment to you,” I muttered, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Can we please not do this anymore? This is father’s funeral. Insulting me and trying to covet my birthright is a slap to father’s face.”
“I’ll talk to you whenever and however I want,” luna Mya seethed, stepping closer to me. “This is your last warning girl. Rescind the title of alpha. Freida is more deserving of the title.”
“Of course. She’s your daughter after all,” I clenched my fists, sounding bitter. “Listen to me Mya, I am not giving up my title or my inheritance. Father named me as his heir for a reason and I am going to do my best to see it through. As for being wolfless, I’ll have you know that I’m working on it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a funeral to go attend. Unlike you, I actually care about paying my final respects to the late alpha of Ash moon pack.”
The last sentence came out in the form of a sneer. I stepped backwards away from her. I waited until there were at least a dozen feet between us before I turned on my heels and made my escape for the funeral hall.
***
Father’s funeral was held at the newly built church. The hall was parked full of delegates and representatives from different packs, all present to pay their final respects to the former alpha of Ash moon pack.
The graveyard was quiet as everyone watched the fall of snowflakes upon the sleek beige casket.
I stared numbly at father’s pale skin, staring back at me from the open casket, and for a moment, I forgot to breathe. Next to me, Brandon gave my hand a reassuring squeeze, reminding me of his presence.
He was my destined mate. After my fight with Luna Mya, he had found me trembling in the hallway and had escorted me back outside, lending me his strength and his unwavering support.
I was lucky to have him. Now that I was well on my right to being the next alpha, I couldn’t wait to be mated to him officially — to rule Ash moon pack with him right by my side.
It was all I ever wanted. We talked about it, Brandon and me. Our plans for the future. The kind of rulers we would be. The kind of pups we would have.
I seldom imagined myself being as open with anyone else, but with Brandon, it came naturally to me. Not only was he my lover, but he was also my soulmate and my best friend.
I was grateful to have him. Grateful that he was right here by my side.
To my right, luna Mya stood rod stiff, staring straight ahead, trying to put up appearances as the matriarch of the perfect wolf family. She was wearing a net hat that obscured her eyes from view. Next to her was my step sister, Freida.
Freida wore a net hat identical to her mothers, but where her mother was cold and unflinching, Freida was a sobbing mess. There were tears in her eyes, that she kept trying to dab at with a handkerchief.
I felt sorry for her. I loathed how much Luna Mya kept trying to wedge a rift between us. It always seemed to backfire though, because regardless of what the Luna tried to do, Freida and I were still pretty close.
Finally, after what felt like forever, father’s casket was lowered into the ground.
The funeral was over half an hour later.
Back at the Ash Moon manor, there was a lavish reception being held there.
Brandon remained glued to my side the entire time.
We glided across the crowd together, putting up a united front.
We greeted the guests together. Listened politely to stories about the exploits of the late alpha Rowan Lovegood.
By the time the reception ended, it was dusk and I was bone tired.
Brandon led me up to an isolated balcony and wasted no time sinking his lips deeply into mine.
He kissed me with a mixture of softness and depth.
It was a soothing kind of kiss, that seemed intent on sucking all the sadness out of me.
ALEXEI POV“How do you like your hair, Alpha heir?” The stylist asked as she ran a comb through my hair.“I want a braided bun,” I replied. Staring at my reflection in the mirror. I remember this moment, I had been overly excited, dancing around in my robe when Mya had stumbled in with her stylist, she had been so polite, asking them to make me the most beautiful girl for tonight, and looking back, my look was just simple, nothing compared to how she and her daughter turned up.So, to make a difference, I got a stylist of my own and picked out the perfect look for tonight.Soon, I was ready. The stylist left me to myself, dressed in a black diamond dress, silver heels, and silver accessories to match. I looked amazing, vicious, and strong. This is the Alexei I should have been all these while, not a blind puppet, nodding to everything life threw at me. This is the Alexei those bastards deserve. My day has finally arrivedafter spending weeks planning the perfect event, making sure it
Alexei's POVMy jaw dropped in shock, Nikolai just addressed me with my real name. Was he able to see through me, How is that possible? He shut the door behind him and chuckled softly, “ But why are you even dressing up in such a weird way? You could have come here in you normal self.” Nikolai questioned me.“I have no idea what you're talking about, Can you take your leave now?” I muttered.“Ha! It's truly you, I recognize that voice of yours.” Nikolai taunted. It was very obvious at that point, that my identity has been figured out. I was so lost and didn't know how to get out of the situation.“Tell me, why are you doing this? You're up to no good, right?” Nikolai questioned me.“ You do not possibly think so do you? Let me be, this obviously has nothing to do with you.” I replied.Nikolai smirked, this could only mean he'll continue pestering me until he gets an answer. I need to shake him off, to avoid any problems.“I am just trying to stay fit and so, it's quite boring at the p
Nikolai's POVWho was that? She did not even feel remorseful for brushing shoulders and almost causing me to fall. Her appearance was quite an unusual one.The weirdest part was that she does not even know who I am. Every woman knows and are fawning on me.“Well, I guess there's always an odd ball.” I said and continued walking.I soon reached home again and the door was pushed open by the guards. A maid emerged and bowed to me, “Welcome, Young master. Hope you had a splendid day?”“Well, it couldn't have gone better.” I muttered and continued walking, heading to my room.I finished having my bath and headed out to have dinner. The table was served and I ate silently, which soon caught my father's attention.“ Nikolai, you seem lost in thought today. Did something happen?” He asked.“What? Oh no, everything is fine father.” I replied, with a faint smile. He nodded and continued eating, relieving me.What was I thinking about again? Oh yes, the woman I met at the academy. For some unkn
Alexei's POVThe next day, I woke up and the first thing I did as to check my computer. There was a notification, as I had hoped.I didn't expect the exam results to come in this early, but Perhaps that's better. Waiting for a long time to get rejected is not something I look forward to doing.“Now, you better accept me. They cannot ruin my whole plan by refusing to let me train in their academy now.”My heart beat hard against my chest as I opener it. “Yes! I finally got accepted!” I said, with joy.I was enlisted as a student in the academy and could go there to finish my paperwork now.Without wasting time, I got ready and left the pack, heading for the academy.Adding thick layers of makeup and changing my hair color was the first thing I did, to conceal my identity. Hopefully, they will not recognize until it's too late. I reached the academy and walked in, covering my face.I made my way to the manager's office and requested to finish my paperwork. He requested me to register an
Alexei's POV“Careful darling,” he snickered, bringing his face close to mine. “You could easily have hurt yourself. I guess it’s a good thing you’ve got me to look after you.”He shot me a conspiratorial wink.I didn’t realize I was still holding my breath until I felt my head swim with a heavy wave of dizziness.“Congratulation my love.” He said flashing his charming smile, that smile which made my heart skip a beat now disgusted the very essence of my soul.“We should go on a date today, to celebrate your new role in the pack. I have something special planned out. Why don't you go upstairs, something nice is waiting up for you.” Brandon stated, trying to reach for my hair but I tilted my head, pretending to tuck my hair, whilst forcing a smile.Oh of course I remembered this moment, the so called surprise gift was a really horrible looking dress, one I had with a heart filled with love ignored how terrible it looked and wore it to the date.I decided to accept the date proposal, but w
ALEXEI’S POVToday was the day that father announced me as his successor. The heir apparent of Ash moon pack.In my past life, I had be overjoyed by father’s announcement. Naive and ignorant about the enemies I had made as a result.Freida had squealed in false cheer, hugging me tightly. Luna Mya had smiled at me, giving me a soft pat on the back. How had I not been able to see their loathing, shimmering right beneath the surface of their fake smiles? How could I have been so blind to it?It was a good thing that I knew better. It was almost as if I could see everyone in a new light. It made it so much easier to sift out false reactions from the fake ones. The throne room was packed full of pack members and elders. Father sat on his custom high backed seat, observing the assembled crowd with an air of polite rigidity. From my place next to his seat, I studied my step mother and sister closely. They looked normal enough. Calm and collected in their pristine designer outfits.Freida had
