Chapter 2

Michelle
Luca’s private Instagram stayed active all night.

He rarely posted there. The account was only open to people inside the family circle, but that night he uploaded three stories in a row.

The first was South Dock at night.

The second showed his black speedboat under the pier lights.

In the third, Mira stood beside him in the red dress I had chosen for her. The sea wind had blown her hair loose, and Luca was tucking it behind her ear, his fingers lingering there as if they had known each other for years.

I stared at the screen.

Replies started coming in almost immediately.

You really took her to South Dock?

Bella has never even been there, has she?

Who is she?

A few minutes later, Luca replied.

Bella is family. Don’t make it weird.

Then he posted another photo, this time only Mira’s profile.

The caption was short.

Be nice to her.

No explanation. No hesitation.

He placed me inside the neat shell of family, then brought a woman who had only gotten his number the night before into a place I had never been allowed to enter.

More comments followed. People praised Mira’s looks, said Luca was finally serious, and joked that the Moretti family might be preparing for an engagement soon.

I watched for a while before replying.

You look good together.

Then I turned my phone face down on the table.

I had already decided to draw the line, but my chest still ached, like an old wound pressed again.

Mira came back very late.

She carried a large bouquet of white roses. Her lips were darker than before, her coat hung loosely over her shoulders, and there was a red mark near her collar that she had not bothered to hide.

The girls in the side wing gathered around her at once.

“He really took you to South Dock?”

“That’s Moretti’s private dock. Outsiders never get in.”

“Luca has never shown anyone off like this.”

Mira held the flowers, blushing just enough.

“He said I’m the first girl he has ever officially brought there.”

When she said it, her gaze passed over me lightly.

I sat by the window and said nothing.

Soon she came over, her voice careful while satisfaction hid in her eyes.

“Bella, I only just found out you’re not really Luca’s sister.”

“They said you’ve liked him for years.”

“If this bothers you, I can apologize.”

“No need.”

I cut her off.

“They were talking nonsense.”

She clearly did not believe me.

The other girls went quiet too, their eyes moving between us. Someone asked, “Then do you like anyone?”

I had not planned to answer.

At that moment, my phone lit up.

A news alert appeared on the screen.

Julian Romano returns to New York for tomorrow night’s charity auction.

In the photo, Julian stood on the second floor of an auction hall in a black suit, his expression cold. Two guards stood behind him.

The Romano family and the Moretti family had been circling each other for years, and Julian and I had disliked each other since childhood. We fought over the first dance at family parties, then over riding, shooting lessons, and business courses. For more than a decade, we could not meet without arguing.

In the past two years, I had been too busy with Luca to deal with him.

Looking at that photo, I thought his name was perfect.

Distant enough.

Sharp enough to hurt Luca.

“Yes,” I said.

The girls immediately asked, “Who?”

I picked up my phone and pointed at the screen.

“Julian Romano.”

The room went quiet.

Someone drew in a breath.

“Bella, are you serious?”

“That’s Julian.”

“He isn’t like Luca. He doesn’t play games with women.”

I smiled and gave no explanation.

For a second, Mira’s expression stiffened. She probably had not expected me to name someone like him after listening to her talk about Luca.

Neither had I.

But the moment I said it, something inside me felt lighter.

For five years, I had always feared Luca would misunderstand, get angry, or think I was not sensible enough.

Now I suddenly did not want to be afraid anymore.

I put my phone away and returned to my room.

Behind me, people were still whispering about Julian and praising Mira and Luca. Once the door closed, their voices blurred.

Luca had called me family.

Then I would be family.

Three days after Luca signed the papers, the Moretti family held a long internal meeting. The De Lucas cut off several harbor routes, and the Romanos withdrew from a storage project they had been preparing to fund. The Moretti elders could excuse many things, but not Luca’s decision to offend two families at once over a woman he had already lost.Soon after, Luca was removed from South Dock operations. The men who had once crowded around him began avoiding him. In our circle, loyalty lasted only as long as power did.Mira fell even faster. The De Luca club ended her contract, and the Morettis stopped taking her calls. The private rooms she had entered through Luca closed their doors to her. I heard she tried to see him at the hotel more than once, only to be turned away by his guards, and eventually left New York with a few suitcases and no one willing to mention her name.By then, I no longer cared.Julian was still busy, but he came to the De Luca estate almost every evening. The chaos at the auction hall’s side entrance was contained quickly.De Luca and Romano guards blocked the reporters while Moretti men helped Luca into a car. By the time the blood was cleaned from the pavement, the scene had returned to its polished shape.A Romano lawyer followed Julian to speak with security. Julian looked back once.“Go home and wait for me.”I did not answer. I was tired of only waiting. That night, I returned to the De Luca estate. My father’s face darkened after hearing what had happened, but he only called the Romano family himself. My mother held my hand.“A De Luca daughter does not lower her head for someone else’s cruelty.”I had been afraid of embarrassing the family, yet they had never asked me to swallow my pain for their reputation. The next morning, our lawyer told me the Morettis had not dropped the matter against Julian. Luca was badly hurt: fractured nose, bruised cheekbone, stitches at the corner of his mouth.I asked only one question. “Where is h

I stayed in Julian’s safe apartment for nearly half a month.By the time the scabs on my wrist had healed and my ankle could bear weight again, the De Luca charity auction was only hours away. I would have preferred to skip it, but my mother called and reminded me that the longer I disappeared, the uglier the rumors would become.Julian sent over an emerald dress and drove me to the auction hall himself.Cars from every old family lined the side entrance. When the guard opened the door, Julian stepped out first and offered me his hand. I hesitated before placing mine in his palm, and he helped me down without holding too tightly.“Does your ankle still hurt?”“Not much.”“Then don’t walk too fast.”“Julian, I’m not made of glass.”His mouth barely moved. “I know. Glass doesn’t argue this much.”I was about to answer when hurried footsteps cut across the driveway. Luca came straight toward us and grabbed my wrist before I could move. His grip landed on the place that had only just heale

The doctor wanted me to stay under observation for the night.Julian did not take me away immediately. He called a Romano physician to check my injuries and placed two guards outside the room. Around three in the morning, Luca came.I was half awake when I heard voices beyond the door. Julian’s was too low to hear clearly, but I caught the last sentence.“She doesn’t want to see you.”The corridor stayed quiet. Then the footsteps retreated. At dawn, Julian took me out through the side entrance. My ankle was swollen, and pain shot up my leg the moment I tried to stand. Before I could argue, he lifted me from the bed.“Don’t be stubborn.”“I can go back to the De Luca estate.”“If you go back now, everyone will know you left a Moretti restaurant in an ambulance.” He carried me down the hall, careful and steady. “Your mother will ask questions. So will the Morettis. Do you want to explain tonight?”I did not.His car waited outside. After settling me into the back seat and covering my leg

Luca said nothing after the black sports car left the restaurant.Harbor lights slid across the windows and disappeared into the dark. He kept one hand on the wheel and tugged at his collar with the other, but the tightness in his chest would not ease. What stayed in his mind was Bella standing outside the restaurant, smiling faintly as she said someone was coming for her, as if he was no longer worth even a little anger. In the passenger seat, Mira held the white roses and checked the messages congratulating her. After a while, she leaned closer.“Luca, will I be allowed to visit your South Dock safe house too?”His expression cooled. “Who told you about that place?”Mira flinched, her eyes quickly reddening. “I only heard people mention it. Bella has been there many times, hasn’t she? I thought… since you’ve made me public, I could know more about you.”Bella.Hearing that name from Mira’s mouth made Luca’s fingers tighten around the steering wheel.“You’re different from her.”Mira

The private hospital smelled of antiseptic. The doctor cleaned the scrapes on my wrist and knees, then checked my swollen ankle. Nothing was broken, only a sprain and bruising, but I would have to stay off my feet for a few days.I lay on the bed and watched the IV drip fall slowly. From the moment the ambulance took me away from the back lane behind Moretti’s restaurant, I had been calm. When the nurse cleaned the torn skin, I only frowned. My phone lay on the bedside table, its screen dark. I had deleted Luca’s number, but my fingers still remembered where it used to be, as if some old habit had chosen for me in danger. The door opened then.I thought it was the nurse, but when I looked up, Julian Romano stood at the entrance. The corridor light sharpened his shoulders, and his black coat still carried the chill of the night. His gaze dropped to the bandage around my wrist, then to my swollen ankle.“Isabella De Luca,” he said, colder than usual. “I thought you were supposed to be fo
