Chapter 4

Penulis: Reneemoon
A flash of embarrassment and anger crossed Layla's face. She quickly pressed a hand to her forehead and spoke in a weak whisper.

"God... I'm... I'm so dizzy..."

Although she looked a little odd, everyone still breathed a sigh of relief when they saw she was awake.

Dean Carter and Cole quickly helped her up from either side and into the ambulance that had just pulled up.

Before the doors closed, Layla shot me one last look, her gaze dark with hostility.

I knew she wouldn't let this go.

Sure enough, after the dust settled, she didn't back off. If anything, she and Cole got closer, clearly cooking up something.

Then came a group project. Citing my grades, they talked the professor into putting us all in the same group and making me team lead.

By the time I found out, the groups were final. I had no choice but to roll with it.

One of my buddies sent me a text out of the blue.

"Owen, Cole's been acting really weird! He told the professor he needed a sedative for an animal experiment and checked it out from the lab, but I just saw him hand it off to Layla!"

I locked my phone and gave a cold smile.

Just as I'd expected, they'd run out of patience.

Almost on cue, Layla's text came through:

"Hey, Owen. The classroom's too loud. Cole and I got a table at the cafe on the corner. Want to come discuss the project?"

I texted back two words: "Sure thing."

If they were walking straight into the crosshairs, they couldn't blame me for pulling the trigger.

I fired off quick texts to my buddy and another contact.

"Go time."

At the cafe, I'd barely sat down when Cole slid a coffee across the table with a big smile.

"Here, Owen. Get some caffeine in you and we'll take our time on this."

I glanced at the murky liquid and pushed it right back.

"No thanks. I've got a physical for tomorrow's swim meet. Can't put anything weird in my system today."

Layla and Cole both went stiff for a split second.

Layla awkwardly changed the subject back to the project.

After a few minutes of small talk, I excused myself to the restroom, already thinking about how to slip out.

But the second I turned on the faucet, someone clamped a wet cloth over my mouth and nose from behind!

"Mmph!"

My eyes flew wide. I fought wildly against whoever held me as one thought flashed through my mind.

The drug wasn't in the coffee. It was on the cloth!

But it was too late. A crushing wave of dizziness hit me and I crumpled to the cold floor like a rag doll.

The last thing I saw before the darkness took me was Cole's sneering face.

Cole and Layla went slack with shock. All the fight drained out of them as the officers pushed them through the door.Ryan came over to me with a wicked grin."How about that? Good thing your buddy came to save you, or the whole internet would be tearing you apart right now!"I laughed and slung an arm around each of them."All right, pizza and burgers tonight. My treat!"Evan grinned wide and thumped me on the chest. After everything blew over, life went back to normal.Well, not exactly normal. I'd opened a social media account, and people had been flocking to follow me. I checked after class, and it had already hit a hundred thousand followers.[Smart and hot? Layla snapped and lunged for my face, nails out."You bastard! I worked so hard for everything I have! Who the hell are you to take it from me!"Detective Harris grabbed her by the collar and pinned her back in her chair, voice dead serious."Ms. Brooks, I strongly advise you not to try anything. One more move and we will use physical restraint!"Layla's lips trembled. Then she whipped her finger toward Cole."Don't... don't arrest me! It was him! He forced me into all of it! He planned the whole thing and beat me whenever I refused. I had no choice!""What? You bitch!" Cole twisted around and roared right back. "Detective, don't listen to her lies! She came to me first. She said that since Owen and I already didn't get along, I should help her frame him..."She even said if the views blew up, she'd split the money with me fifty-fifty! I've still got the recording of her bribing me on my phone!""What?! You've been scheming against me this whole time?!"Layla completely lost it. She th

Officers moved in immediately, pinning them down. Handcuffs clicked shut around their wrists."Wait! It's fake! It's all fabricated!" Cole was losing it, his cuffs clanking. "He used AI to fake it! They're framing us!""That's... that's right! Owen's had it out for me all along. This whole thing was his sick revenge plot!" Layla shrieked."Framed? Revenge?" I let out a cold laugh. "Even now, you're still twisting the truth?"Cole, if you really want to prove your innocence, why don't you let forensics swab under your fingernails for traces of the sedative? Or better yet, let's pull the lab's checkout log for that chemical."Cole's pupils shrank to pinpoints. His lips trembled, but no words came out."Layla, your manager, Dana Pierce, was already plotting to frame me back during the lake incident, wasn't that right? And the hotel surveillance was hacked by someone working for your management company!"Layla was shaking violently now, her nails digging into her palms.I looked her dead i

Evan clenched his fists, anger threading through his voice."When I got Owen's shared location and rushed to the hotel, I saw them hauling him inside."I followed them. While they were stripping him and dumping him on the bed, then leaving to get their camera equipment, I climbed through the hallway window into the room, threw his jacket over him, and carried him out."He paused here and took a deep breath."But right as I reached the stairwell, I heard them coming back. There was no time. I stashed Owen in a storage room, then... quickly changed into his clothes and got back on that bed."What I didn't expect was that they drugged me again with the cloth, just to be safe. In the last second before I blacked out, the only thing I managed to do was hit the record button on the voice recorder hidden in my pocket."The room held its breath. You could've heard a pin drop.Detective Harris nodded slowly, but confusion still clouded his face."So, in trying to collect evidence against them,

If Evan also had a brother branded a rapist, the bright future he deserved would be ruined because of me.Evan turned to Detective Harris with a calm smile."Detective, the person at the hotel at the time of the incident was not my brother."It was me."Shock flashed in Detective Harris's eyes, nearly cracking his professional calm."What? How is that possible? Are you telling me you anticipated all of this?"Evan looked my way. Seeing the encouragement in my

He gave me the slightest nod, then slapped a folder down on the table."This is proof that Owen was in the dorm with me!"Layla and Cole froze. When they saw what was in the folder, their eyes went wide.It was... a screenshot of an online match history showing Ryan and me playing together."What the hell is this? You're trying to pass off a game screenshot as evidence?" Cole barked, but there was an involuntary tremor in his voice.Ryan shrugged."This is the clearest proof that Owen had no time to commit the crime. We were both playing in the same live match."If you don't believe me, check the timestamp in the top right corner."Everyone's eyes shot to the corner. They all went still.3:05 p.m.!"Still not convinced? Keep going." Ryan leaned in and flipped to the next page. The shock on everyone's faces was impossible to hide.It was a photo of Ryan and me eating pizza and making goofy faces at the camera. The timestamp read:4:10 p.m.!"How... how is that possible!" Cole's face dra
