Chapter 5

Echo
The day after I got home from the hospital, Donatello found me in the study.

“Let me take you on a vacation,” he said. “A cruise. The Mediterranean. We can… make up for the honeymoon we never had.”

I knew this was just an apology for not picking me up. I was already used to his broken promises, so it didn't hurt anymore.

But a honeymoon…

My fingers tightened on my pen.

Because our marriage was a secret, we never had a wedding. He’d said we would do the honeymoon “later.” For three years, “later” never came.

A month ago, his words might have made me cry with happiness.

But now, I just looked at him quietly for a long time.

“Okay,” I heard myself say.

This was the last time, anyway. A final, decent end to a marriage that was anything but.

On the day we left, the yacht was waiting at a private marina.

As I stepped onto the deck with my suitcase, the first person I saw was Angelina.

She was wearing a white linen dress, her hair blowing in the sea breeze, laughing about something with her brother, Marcus.

My knuckles turned white on the handle of my suitcase.

Donatello came up behind me, his voice low in my ear. “Angelina heard I was going on the water and said she’d always wanted to try a cruise… Marcus was worried, so he came along. Don’t worry. This won’t affect us.”

Affect us.

I laughed silently to myself. Our honeymoon was a party from the start.

Angelina saw me and froze for a second before walking over. “Donatello, why bring your lawyer on vacation? Is there important business to handle?”

Before I could answer, I felt Donatello’s gaze on me, tense and sharp.

I lowered my eyes and offered a gentle smile. “Miss Bianchi, I’m actually going through a divorce myself right now. Mr. Vexille heard we were in a similar situation and thought it might be good for us to… talk.”

Angelina looked surprised, then her eyes filled with pity. She took my hand. “Miss Merouin, I’m so sorry to hear that.”

Behind me, Donatello let out a very soft sigh of relief.

At sunset, I was sitting alone on the deck when Angelina came to find me.

“Miss Merouin,” she began, looking at the fiery sunset. “Why are you getting a divorce?”

I turned to meet her clear, sympathetic eyes. I took a moment before answering slowly. “My husband… he’s in love with someone else.”

Angelina’s eyelashes fluttered. She clutched her wine glass, her own eyes instantly turning red.

“How could any man do that…” she whispered, her voice filled with genuine anger. “Don’t worry, Miss Merouin. Donatello will help you. He hates men like that.”

I just smiled and said nothing.

“How are your divorce proceedings going?” I asked, changing the subject.

At that, a faint blush appeared on her pale cheeks.

“Donatello… he assigned four bodyguards to me, 24/7,” she said, looking down. “When my ex was at his worst, he had his men take him away. I still don’t even know where he is… He told me I’d never have to be afraid again.”

When she spoke, her eyes sparkled.

I took a sip of champagne. It was cold going down, but a bitter warmth spread through my chest.

Finally, I asked the question.

“Angelina… are you in love with him?”

Her face turned beet red.

“I…” She bit her lip. “I always just thought of him as a big brother. When I was a kid, boys at school would bully me, and he’d bring his guys and teach them a lesson. When I was older, some gang was harassing my family, and he wiped the entire gang off the map in a week…”

Her eyes lit up as she spoke, then quickly dimmed.

“But I always thought he just saw me as a little sister. It wasn’t until the day I got divorced that my brother told me… Donatello has been in love with me for years.”

The sea breeze suddenly felt freezing.

So that was it. He wasn’t incapable of being gentle. He wasn’t born cold.

He just didn’t love me.

The realization was like a tiny, sharp needle, slowly sinking into the deepest part of my heart.

“Miss Merouin?” Angelina looked at me, worried. “You look pale…”

“I’m fine,” I managed a smile. “Just a little cold.”

She squeezed my hand gratefully, as if she’d found her only confidante. “Miss Merouin, what about you? What do you… think of Donatello?”

I looked into her innocent eyes and felt a strange mix of humor and sorrow.

“I’m just his employee,” I said softly. “I don’t really know him.”

I paused, then added, “But I can tell he’s loved you for a very long time.”

Angelina’s face was completely flushed.

At dinner, Donatello sat at the head of the long, elegant table. His gaze almost never left Angelina.

“You don’t eat raw beef, so I had the chef cook this tartare to medium.”

“I had them leave the hazelnuts out of the dessert. You’re allergic.”

“I swapped the wine for a Barolo. You said you liked it at Marcus’s house.”

I just listened in silence, a ghost at the feast.

After dinner, Donatello walked a slightly tipsy me back to my cabin. The hallway lights were dim. He held my arm, his tone uncharacteristically gentle.

“Avril, thank you for being so understanding tonight,” he said quietly. “Angelina… she’s been in a bad place. She needs a little extra care.”

“I know.”

He hesitated, as if steeling himself. “At the family conference next year…” He looked at me, his gaze more serious than I’d ever seen it. “I’m going to announce our marriage.”

Next year.

I turned and looked out the porthole, saying nothing.

I didn’t want to wait anymore.

I "ran into" Donatello again at the hotel check-in desk. The girl at the front desk looked up from her computer with a professional smile."Ms. Merouin, congratulations. You've been given a complimentary upgrade to our top-floor Aurora Suite."I pressed my fingers to my forehead and took a deep breath. Then a familiar figure strolled up beside me.Donatello handed his passport to the receptionist."Good evening. I have a reservation."He turned to me, an expression of pure innocence on his face."Avril, what a coincidence.""I'm staying at this hotel, too."He actually made me laugh.I turned to face him squarely."Donatello, I don't need you to do any of this.""I don't need you to upgrade my room.""And I don't need you within a ten-meter radius of me.""Do you understand?"He just shrugged, completely unbothered."Avril, I just want you to be comfortable.""You don't have to feel pressured.""Besides, this hotel is one of my properties.""Out of all the hotels in Iceland, you just h

Donatello just looked at me, completely unashamed, as if nothing I said could touch him.I suddenly realized that arguing with this man was a complete waste of time.I closed my eyes, reclined my seat, and turned my head to the window, done with him.The plane flew smoothly above the clouds.I pretended to be asleep, but I could feel his eyes on me.His gaze was intense, tracing the side of my face, lingering on my forehead, my nose, my lips.I was incredibly annoyed, but I refused to open my eyes. After a long time, I heard him speak softly."Avril.""Can I ask you a question?""Did you decide to divorce me because you found out I sent bodyguards to protect Angelina?"I opened my eyes and turned to look at him."That was just the final straw."After all this time, I could finally talk about it calmly."Donatello, the thought of divorcing you had been there for a long, long time.""Avril…" Donatello's voice was hoarse. "If you were so unhappy, why did you never tell me?""If you had to

A month later, Donatello's wound had mostly healed. The gash, once deep enough to see bone, was now a pale scar.I had visited him in the hospital a few times that month, always for just ten minutes, a brief chat, and then I’d leave. He didn't try to win me back. The tension between us had, surprisingly, eased a little. Now that he was okay, I was ready to resume my interrupted trip.I booked a flight to Iceland. The day before I left, I went to the hospital to say goodbye."Donatello," I said, standing by his bed. "I'm leaving tomorrow."His smile froze. "Where are you going?""Iceland. Then maybe around Scandinavia.""How long will you be gone?"I shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe I'll come back when I get tired of traveling."He was silent for a few seconds. Then he nodded, even managing a gentle smile."Okay.""Travel safe. Have fun."His calm reaction surprised me, but I was also relieved. This is good, I told myself. He's finally letting go.The next morning, Chloe drove me to the a

I stared at my coffee cup, my mind reeling.I never imagined this was the story from Angelina's perspective. After a moment of thought, I finally spoke. "Angelina, thank you for telling me all this today.""But… I can't completely believe it."Angelina looked up, her eyes still wet with tears, and stared at me."If Donatello really loved me," I said with a small, bitter smile, "it's impossible that I wouldn't have felt it at all over the last three years.""A woman's intuition is a powerful thing.""His coldness, his neglect… those are not the actions of a man in love.""So Angelina, I don't want to dig into whether he loves me or not. Maybe he does, but it doesn't matter anymore.""What matters is that the pain I went through for three years was real.""I didn't divorce him because of you."Angelina's eyes welled up again. "Avril…""Angelina," I reached out and gently placed my hand on hers. "Listen to me.""I was the one inside that marriage. And even I've moved on.""You were an out

The next afternoon, Angelina was already sitting at a window seat when I pushed open the coffee shop door. She wore a cream-colored knit sweater, her long hair loosely tied back. She stood up as soon as she saw me."Avril," she said softly, her voice tinged with a nervous energy.I sat down across from her and ordered an Americano. We sat in silence for a while before she finally spoke."Avril," she took a deep breath. "I came here today to tell you, from the bottom of my heart—I'm sorry."She stood up and gave me a slight bow.I was taken aback and quickly motioned for her to sit."Angelina, you don't have to do that.""I have to," she insisted, her eyes turning red. "That day on the yacht, I didn't know you were Donatello's wife. I said so many things… so many things that must have hurt you.""I told you he sent bodyguards for me, I told you he used to have a crush on me…"Her voice broke."Every one of those words must have felt like a knife. It was three in the morning when Donatello was wheeled out of surgery.I was sitting on a bench in the hallway, still covered in his blood.I don't know why I stayed.I just… couldn't bring myself to walk away. The doctor came out and told me, "He's out of danger."I let out a long, shuddering breath. The hospital room was quiet, except for the steady beeping of the heart monitor.Donatello lay on the bed, hooked up to a dozen tubes. His face was ashen, but as I walked in, his eyes slowly fluttered open.He looked at me, his lips moving.I had to lean in close to hear him."...Your clothes."He spoke weakly. "Change them. You must be cold."I froze.I didn't realize I was crying until I felt a tear slide down my cheek.Donatello's hand, the one with the IV, trembled as he slowly raised it.His thumb gently brushed away the tear from the corner of my eye."Avril, I'm sorry," he rasped."I'm the one who brought this danger to you.""If I hadn't gone public with our marriage, the Salvator
