Chapter 5

Author: Cinderwing
Silas had tried to block me from investigating back then simply because he was terrified of his crimes coming to light!

My heart hammered frantically against my ribs as I immediately spilled everything I had uncovered to Mr. Hunter.

Mr. Hunter’s expression turned fierce, and he whipped out his phone on the spot, ordering his team to launch an immediate, full-scale investigation.

Before I left, Mr. Hunter gave me a grim warning. "Until the truth comes fully to light, you need to stay as far away from Silas as possible. Do not set him off, or you'll put a target on your own back!"

I promised I would, but a burning tide of hatred was raging inside my chest.

Silas was a total monster. He had murdered his own sister yet spent years parading around wearing the mask of a righteous, supportive brother.

A scumbag like that didn't deserve to spend another second breathing air on this earth.

After leaving the coffee shop, I stopped by a local store, bought the sharpest utility knife I could find, and drove straight to Silas' house.

When he opened the door and saw it was me, he didn't look surprised at all. He just asked flatly, "What brings you here?"

"I have questions for you," I said, slipping the knife behind my back as I pushed my way straight into the apartment, "How did Scarlett actually die?"

Silas shut the door behind me, walked over to the couch, sat down, and poured himself a glass of water.

"Didn't I tell you that a long time ago? She had depression and took her own life. Why are you still obsessing over this?"

"You're lying!"

I couldn't hold it back anymore, my voice rising to a shout.

"She never had depression to begin with. You made all of that up!

"There wasn't any suicide text message from her on your phone at all! Instead, right before she died, she sent you a text saying she'd found out your biggest secret!"

Silas froze with the water glass in his hand, his eyes instantly turning ice-cold. "You snooped through my phone?"

"If I hadn't snooped, how would I have ever known you were playing me this whole time?"

I pulled the knife out from behind my back, closing the distance between us step by step.

"You were the one who leaked the raid intel to the cartel! You're the reason Scarlett and our unborn baby died!"

Silas bolted up from the couch, his face turning terrifyingly dark.

"Jace, drop the knife!

"You don't have any proof, so stop throwing around wild accusations!"

"Proof?" I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "That text message is the proof!

"As her brother and her consulting psychologist, you were supposed to recuse yourself to avoid a conflict of interest. Instead, you insisted on handling her treatment just so you could fake the records and make it look like she was mentally unstable!"

"I don't know what you're talking about," Silas said, taking a step back, "I'm telling you to leave right now, or I'm calling the cops."

"You think you've got the guts to call the cops?" My eyes were bloodshot, my voice cracking and hoarse as I stared at him without an ounce of fear. "You're terrified the police will dig up the truth and expose you as the mole!

"Silas, you murdered your own blood with your bare hands. How do you sleep at night?

"Watching me cry and break down at Scarlett's grave, were you laughing inside at how pathetic I was, thanking the literal killer who destroyed our lives?"

Silas backed away a few more steps. The exact second I lunged forward with the knife, he swerved to the side with lightning speed, parrying the blade and twisting it right out of my grip!

We tumbled hard onto the floor, wrestling for control.

With a background in law enforcement and military training, his physical strength completely outmatched mine, and he pinned me flat to the ground in seconds.

"Jace, everything was already in the past! Why did you have to dig out the truth?

"You can't handle the truth of what really happened!"

The veins on his forehead bulged, the tip of the knife hovering just a fraction of an inch away from my throat.

Right at that fraction of a second, the apartment door flew off its hinges with a deafening crash, and a swarm of police officers flooded into the room.

"Nobody move! Drop your weapons!"

"The second you showed a reaction to that name and started chasing after the truth, I had to do whatever it took to stop you. I had to trap you inside the lie she built about her depression and suicide, so you would never find out the brutal reality."It turned out that from the very beginning, Scarlett had been protecting me.Even if it meant sacrificing her own life and carrying the shameful label of a depressed suicide victim, she still fought to keep me safe.I couldn't hold it back anymore, collapsing forward onto the metal table and breaking down into gut-wrenching, uncontrollable sobs.Three years of fierce, blind obsession shattered into dust in a single second, leaving behind nothing but a tidal wave of crushing guilt and total despair. The killer I had hated with every fiber of my being for three years wasn't some stranger. It was me.I was the one who had murdered the woman I loved more than life itself, the one who had killed my own unborn child.Silas, whom I’d loa

"Why?" I choked out."Before you and Scarlett got married, you suffered a severe accident and sustained massive head trauma."Ever since that accident, you developed severe dissociative identity disorder, which people commonly call schizophrenia."You split into a second personality—a version of you who was violent, extreme, and completely out of control. That side of you had been secretly working with the drug cartel for a long time."I was your exclusive attending psychiatrist. From the very beginning, only two people knew about this: me and Scarlett. We kept it hidden from you the entire time because we were afraid that if you found out, your mind would shatter under the psychological shock and your condition would deteriorate beyond repair."…My breathing hitched. I opened my mouth to speak, but not a single sound came out as I stared blankly at him.Listening to the horrific truth, one I had already guessed in my darkest nightmares yet refused to accept, felt like being to

Yet the second that thought bubbled up, I brutally shoved it down, too terrified and unwilling to let my mind go there. On the evening of the third day, Mr. Hunter arrived. He carried a brown parcel envelope, his expression even heavier and darker than it had been three days ago, carrying a trace of almost unbearable pity.My heart sank."Mr. Hunter, you found something?""Yeah." Mr. Hunter stepped into the apartment and laid the envelope down on the table. "We found it. Jace, you need to brace yourself."…I didn't say a word, simply reaching out to pull the flap open and spilling the contents out onto the table.Right on top was an apartment check-in record for the exact building where Scarlett fell to her death. The name listed as the registered tenant was mine. The ID number, phone number, and signature were all entirely mine, down to the final digit. My mind went blank, static roaring in my ears as the papers nearly slipped from my trembling fingers."No way. I’ve never

Clutching the medical files, I bolted out the door like a madman, slammed my foot on the gas, and drove straight to Silas' place.I hammered on his front door with everything I had until he finally pulled it open. The second he saw the papers in my hand, the color drained completely from his face.I shoved past him, stormed into the apartment, and slammed the thick stack of files onto the coffee table."What the hell is this?" I glared right at him. "I’ve never seen you for any kind of treatment. Where did these records come from? What did you do to me?"…Silas stared back at me, his lips parting, but not a single word came out.In his eyes, there was a heavy, tangled mix of pain and hesitation that I couldn't read, along with a flicker of panic I had never seen on him before."Jace," he finally said after a long, agonizing pause, "Stop digging.""Why the hell should I stop?" I fired back, my eyes burning red. "Scarlett's death, these creepy medical files, and every single se

I even tracked down every home security camera and dashcam memory card we owned, then went through the footage frame by frame.I thought I'd find footage of Silas sneaking into our house behind my back, or of him meeting up with cartel members, or shouting matches between him and Scarlett, or any solid piece of evidence showing he murdered her.Instead of finding anything suspicious involving Silas, I dug up a mountain of terrifying footage that I had zero memory of taking!…On memory cards dating back three years, I found over a dozen records of late-night drives. The footage always showed departures around one or two in the morning. The routes led from our house to an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of town, with the car returning two or three hours later.I had never set foot in the warehouse in my life. I had never even heard of them.I stared at the screen, watching my own face behind the steering wheel while my brain remained a blank void, completely devoi

I stared blindly at the security clearance protocols printed on the paperwork, my mind completely blank.…"Besides, right after the intelligence leak back then, internal affairs launched an immediate mole hunt," Mr. Hunter continued, his tone solemn."Silas was actually the first person among all related personnel to voluntarily submit to a background check. Every single call log, communication record, and travel history was cross-examined and verified over and over again, and nothing was found."Every single word systematically tore down the foundation of the truth I had spent three years building.I looked at those black-and-white investigation results on the page, feeling every ounce of strength drain straight out of my body until my legs gave out and I collapsed back into the chair.No.This made no sense. If Silas wasn't the mole, then why had he lied to me? Why did he fake Scarlett's depression diagnosis? Why did he go to such lengths to block me from investigating her d
