Chapter 3 Smug

Author: Wooden Leaf
I gave Joan a smug look and rested my head against Gilbert's chest.

Once we left the club, he let me go unceremoniously, and I fell to the ground. That hurt my butt. The pain was swimming up my spine.

"Don't try anything like that again. Cheap tricks are just going to lower my opinion about you, and I already dislike you."

He then moved into his car and left me in the dust.

There was a reason I did not fight back. I was gambling on something, and I won that gamble.

Every time Joan and I went to our mom's place in our past lives, she wouldn't stop complaining about Gilbert. She called him a lot of names, even called him evil.

I got into contact with him multiple times, but he was nothing like the man Joan said he was. He just didn't want to waste his time on people he didn't like.

I got my wounds bandaged at a hospital and went back to my place beside the workshop.

My mom called the next day. The first thing she greeted me with was a roar. "You attacked your sister and her fiance? How dare you! You're nothing but trouble! You're useless!"

I massaged my forehead. Not the first time my mother called me a waste of space. Thanks to her, I learned how to do the whole family's laundry and cook for everyone when I was still in grade school. All I wanted was a smile, a fraction of her love.

The only thing I got was a bruised body.

"Was that enough venting, Mom? Because I'm hanging up."

That stopped her curses. She told me, "The Pearsons are giving your sister 1.5 million as her wedding gift. What about Gilbert?"

"No idea."

"What? You useless girl! You're not going to let him marry you for free! Ask him right now!"

I hung up. I had to take a deep breath, then I made my way to Gilbert's company. When I barged into his office, he, without even raising his head, asked, "You have five minutes, starting now."

"Two questions. First, a wedding gift. I prefer money. How much are you giving me? And second, what about the wedding?"

That got Gilbert's attention. He raised his head, and an icy smile curled his lips. "Same answer for both questions. I am giving you nothing."

No gifts or weddings. A reptile's blood was probably hotter than this man's. So I shrugged. "Fine."

I got up and was about to leave, but he stopped me, "You don't seem to be mad."

I shook my head like his answer didn't bother me. "I shouldn't have asked for those if I was going into a marriage without love."

"So, what are you trying to get from me?"

I answered honestly, "Status. I want them to call me your wife. And I want the benefits and partnerships your family's name can bring me."

"Very well. I can give you anything you want, long as it's not something useless like love."

For the next few days, I spent all my efforts on the partnership with his company. He sent a project manager called Ronald Zimmerman to work with me.

One night, when I was working overtime with Ronald to talk about the project, my mom and Joan came to my company.

Joan marched in with mockery. "Ah, getting another man just because you can't get Gilbert's love?" She clicked her tongue. "What a whore."

I knew why they were here, so I ignored her and talked to my mom. "We're not going to hold a wedding. And forget about the gifts. There will be none."

My mom raised her voice. "What? So I raised you all for nothing? I can't believe this! Why can't you be like your sister?"

Yelling wasn't enough to calm her anger. She slapped me as well. "You're nothing but useless! You wasted my money!"

Joan followed her mother's example and slapped me as well. She made sure to leave more than one mark on my face.

You think you can just waltz in and we'd accept you with open arms and sing Kumbaya in the house like nothing's happened?""No, Gilbert, listen to me! I didn't mean to send that! I was just confused because I was so angry. I was going to disappear for a couple of days and then show up. But I got kidnapped and taken to some other country!""Is that so?" Gilbert clapped his hand, and a child's voice came in."Mom!"The thug came in with their three-year-old child.Panicked, Gillian explained, "No, listen to me! He raped me! He's the guy who kidnapped me! You have to get him arrested! Arrested!"The thug was tearing up. He looked like a doll covered in cracks and could break at any moment. "What? But you said you loved me. You told me you'd go anywhere with me. Please, come back. We'll be a family, just the three of us. Please."Like a possessed woman, she ran down with superhuman speed and grabbed a bottle of wi

Gilbert tensed up, and my heart skipped a beat. There was a crystal sneaker hanging from the chain. It was supposed to be a pair, but I lost it at the riverside that night. I tried to search for it, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find the other shoe.Gilbert jerked his head up. Before I could say anything, he darted out of my house, and he almost staggered on the way. That was defeating. I plopped down on my couch as the world around me started to crash and burn.Great, he thought I was an easy girl now. We never saw each other again for days after that awkward meeting, nor did we call or text. Still, Diana was working on the wedding with me diligently. Then, finally, the wedding day came. I was backstage, my nerves wracking so much, my hands were clammy. I wasn't sure if Gilbert would show up.The moment I finished doing my makeup, the host summoned me. "It's time. Take the stage.""And the groom?" I asked. "Is he here?"The host shook their head. "He's probably busy

I listened to Diana talk about Gilbert's childhood. As I scanned the awards and accolades, I found one that caught my attention. It was a runner-up trophy for a mechanical design competition. First place belonged to me."Oh, that one? The men I sent to keep an eye on him fished it out of the trash. Though he never talked to me after he got into college, I couldn't just ignore him. I'm still his mother, so I made sure someone would keep an eye on him at all times. That's the only second place he got in his life, and he tossed it into the bin right away."They told me he went to the riverside and drank enough to make a mountain of bottles."My heart skipped a beat, and my breathing turned heavy. I was there that night as well. It was right after I won first place, and the young, happy me wanted to share the news with my mother. The first thing I saw when I got home was Joan crying in my mother's arms. My mother slapped me. "So what if you got first prize? It's nothing!"Like a hurt

Diana's jaw dropped. "What? She confessed to you, Gilbert?"A confused Gilbert asked, "Yeah. I thought you knew that. You sent her overseas and left her for dead because you thought her love for me would hurt the family's reputation if someone found out.""I didn't do that! When I found out she had feelings for you, I talked to her about it, but I didn't say anything too severe. She promised me she would put her feelings aside and focus on school.""That's not what she said!" Gilbert took out his phone. There was a text Gillian sent him before her disappearance.'Don't get mad at Mom, Gilbert. She didn't make me do this. I wanted to leave. You've let me stay with the family for ten years. You've done your obligation to me. I'll carry this love with me and survive in this barren, impoverished nation. Farewell, my dear brother.'Gilbert and his mother were smart people. They saw through Gillian's trick immediately. She was trying to pit them against each other.…In my previous li

I was going to say something, but he continued, "That bridesmaid was my doing too. I told her to drive a wedge between Joan and Jonathan. How do you like that? Oh, and I was serious about giving you the millions."That was a surprise. A cold, aloof man doing that much for me? Then, I looked at him. Something sparked in me. Hope. Perhaps I really could achieve my dream of having a place I could call home. And then the next thing that came out of his mouth killed my dream. "Don't take this the wrong way. I just want to find out what happened to Gillian. I don't mind you dangling the carrot, but don't take it too far."I could smell the warning in that. It was then my phone rang. Unknown number, but I picked it up anyway. The voice that came belonged to a middle-aged woman. "Katherine Wood? I'm Gilbert's mother. Take him back to my place for dinner. We should meet."A simple request, but I hesitated to say yes. In my previous life, I heard Gilbert blamed the disappearance of Gillian

"You're an embarrassment to Mom! This is for her!" Joan said.A wave of injustice fell over me, and my tears wouldn't stop coming.Right then, an icy, biting voice said, "Stop right now!"Gilbert came into my company still wearing black, and he stood as a wall between me and the women. My mom put on a simpering expression. "Ah, you're here, Gilbert."Joan gnashed her teeth. She hissed, "You're going to defend that bitch? No way."Gilbert arched an eyebrow. "Of course I'm going to defend her."I covered my cheek, and a smile curved my lips. Once again, my gamble was fruitful. I noticed Ronald texting someone while my mother was scolding me, and I knew it was for Gilbert. My mother chuckled awkwardly. "I mean, the Pearsons gave me 1.5 million, but you're giving me nothing, so…"Gilbert retorted, "You make your daughters sound like merchandise instead of living humans."My mother had no answer for that, so she grabbed Joan and scurried off.…After they were out of sight, Gilb
