Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Bagel
I turned to meet Blair's dark green eyes, which were now guarded. I put on the same gentle smile I always wore.

"Just a friend. A wealthy heiress I know cheated on her husband. Now he's filing for divorce and demanding a share of the equity."

If she loved to act so much, I would play along.

Blair's eyes scanned my face, searching for any flicker of suspicion in my expression.

Once she was satisfied that I was acting normally, the tension in her shoulders slowly eased.

She wrapped her arm around my waist, her warm lips pressing against my temple, her breath hot on my skin.

"Utterly foolish. People who betray their partners don't deserve success."

"My love, a scandal like that will never happen to us."

I stared quietly into the depths of her dark eyes and smiled faintly.

"But what if it did happen?"

"To… you, for example?"

"Kevin, there is no ‘what if'."

Blair cut me off without hesitation. "I, Blair Valerius, swear on the honor of the Valerius family, I will never betray you."

"Of course. I was just joking."

Blair was silent for a moment. Then she rubbed her nose against my earlobe, a suggestive gesture.

It was ironic. Even while entangled with my brother, she displayed an almost suffocating possessiveness toward me.

"If that day ever comes, then punish me. Let my punishment be never seeing you again for the rest of my life."

"You know this, Kevin. You are my life. Without you, I'd walk straight into hell myself."

I said nothing. I just silently slipped out of her fiery embrace.

In three days, I would escape from this embrace I had once cherished.

The vow you just made is about to come true.

She reached for me, but was interrupted by her assistant's voice.

"Boss, everything is ready."

Blair nodded in satisfaction, a mysterious smile playing on her lips. She took my hand and led me toward the edge of the terrace.

She wrapped her arms around me from behind, covering my eyes with her hands, and whispered in my ear.

"My love, the main event of the evening is here."

"I have a special gift for you."

"Five… four… three…"

As the countdown hit zero, she released her hands.

The sight before me was breathtaking.

She had booked the entire private harbor, and the sky above was lit up by thousands of drones.

Brilliant bands of light shifted rapidly, forming giant letters against the starry sky, spelling out my name: Kevin Thorne.

Blair's arms wrapped tightly around my waist, her voice thick with deep emotion.

"Sweetheart, we've been married for seven whole years. But every day with you still feels like the first time we met."

I looked up at the glittering letters, feeling a sense of surreal detachment.

Yes, seven whole years.

I was supposed to be one of the most promising rising stars in my field. For her, I had willingly clipped my own wings, given everything up, and become the quiet husband of the richest man's daughter.

So much had changed in these seven years.

So many people had mocked me for being a kept man, but I believed that only the two people in a marriage know its true nature, so I never cared about outside opinions.

But I never expected that seven years was long enough for deep love to curdle into betrayal, for vows to ferment into lies.

Blair turned me to face her, her dark green eyes staring into mine as if she could absorb me into herself.

"Seven years. And every year, I want to give you the very best."

She slowly leaned in, her lips about to meet mine.

If I hadn't heard that conversation in the lounge tonight, I would have been fooled by this masterful performance for the rest of my life.

Just as our lips were about to touch, the phone in her jacket pocket began to vibrate wildly.

A flash of annoyance crossed her face, an expression I knew all too well.

Good. That saved me the trouble of finding another excuse to pull away.

"Damn it. I said tonight was strictly private. I'd like to see who has a death wish."

But when she saw the screen, her expression shifted, the anger in her eyes turning to ice.

I glanced at the caller ID: My Little Wolf.

I knew it was Julian.

Blair cleared her throat unnaturally, quickly turning her wrist to hide the screen as her fingers flew to silence the call.

In that split second, I saw the flicker of panic in her eyes, mixed with raw desire.

Sure enough, when she looked up again, her face was a mask of impeccable guilt.

"What is it?" I asked, feigning nonchalance, though my fists were clenched tight.

"An emergency at the company." She put her phone away. "Darling, I might have to leave for a little while."

"Now?"

"I'm sorry. I know tonight is important to us. But this really can't wait."

She pressed a kiss to my cheek.

"Wait for me in our room. I'll make it up to you when I get this sorted out."

"I understand. The company always comes first."

I nodded obediently, playing the part of the understanding husband to perfection.

Blair was visibly relieved. She gave me another quick hug and turned to leave, almost in a hurry.

I stood on the terrace, watching her car drive out the gates.

Once her taillights had vanished from sight, I turned and walked toward the parking garage.

If she had an "emergency" to handle, then I figured I should go see just how urgent this matter really was.

I started the engine and silently followed in the direction her car had gone.

The director seated Blair at the head of the virtual table, grandly introducing the "philanthropist" to the team.Only then did I learn that she had liquidated nearly half of the Valerius Group's assets, cashing out billions, and poured it all into our agency. All to buy her way into Aegis.I forced my expression to remain flat, staring at the screen with no warmth in my eyes."Ms. Valerius has brought our organization the largest single donation since the institute's founding."A round of enthusiastic applause filled the room. My colleagues were thrilled by the massive sum."This funding will advance our operational capabilities by at least three years.""I hope to see all of you at the welcome dinner tonight."At eight o'clock that evening, I had no choice but to attend the dinner.I wore a simple white shirt and black slacks, my hair a mess after a long day of work.I was a stark contrast to the other male colleagues in their tailored suits, all eager to network.Blair stood in the

Julian never dreamed she would be so ruthless. His pleas for mercy grew more and more desperate. But Blair didn't even spare him a glance. After disposing of that arrogant fool, Blair threw all her energy back into the search for Kevin. Her informants within federal law enforcement, the entire East Coast underground intelligence network, none of them could produce any information about Kevin.Even her contacts inside the government reported that there were no records of a Kevin Thorne in any database. It was as if he had never been born."Impossible!""Impossible!"Blair's frantic movement sent coffee splashing from her cup."How can a living, breathing person just vanish off the face of the earth?!"She suddenly froze. A conversation from their anniversary night flashed through her mind. She had sworn to the night sky that if she ever betrayed him, her punishment would be to never see him again for the rest of her life. She never thought that casual vow would become the cruelest curse

Seeing that arrogant message, Blair finally understood everything.Kevin had known all along. His departure had been the final push off a cliff, triggered by Julian's taunts.A rage she had never felt before surged from her chest to the top of her head.Like a madwoman, Blair stormed toward the penthouse where Julian was staying. When Julian opened the door, his face was lit with a joyful surprise. He thought Blair had finally abandoned Kevin for good.He was still lost in his dream of becoming the new "master" of the Valerius Group."Blair, are you here to take me home? I'll pack my things and leave with you right now.""I knew you couldn't bear to be without me, without the father of our baby."The words had barely left his mouth when a heavy slap struck his face.Blair loomed over him, the sharp heel of her shoe grinding into his foot. Her face was as dark as a stormy sea, her entire being radiating a chilling, almost deathly coldness."Julian, who the hell gave you the nerve to tel

Watching the downpour outside, Julian felt not a shred of concern for Blair or their child.Instead, a wave of savage joy washed over him.It seemed his provocative texts had worked. The high-and-mighty master of the Valerius household had finally been knocked off his throne. He feigned concern, nodding and giving a mock order to the bodyguard beside him."We'll wait for news from the boss here."But in his heart, he hoped more than anyone that Blair would never find Kevin again.Meanwhile, Blair was dialing the number she knew by heart, over and over again. But the only response was the cold, mechanical voice."We're sorry, the number you have dialed has been switched off. Please try again later."The rain soaked her hair and her designer dress, but she seemed oblivious. After dozens of failed attempts, she threw the phone aside, repeatedly urging the driver to speed up.The car shot through the streets like an arrow released from a bow."Ms. Valerius, you're back…" The head housekeep

The next second, my phone began to vibrate uncontrollably. The name "Blair" flashed on my phone screen, over and over again.I held down the power button and shut it off.Since I had chosen the highest level of security protocol, I had to cut every last tie to my past world. The car drove through familiar streets.Every brick and stone of this city was marked with the seal of the Valerius Group, and with the seven years I had spent with Blair. But from now on, none of it had anything to do with me.I popped out the SIM card and tossed it out the open window without a second glance.I wasn't there to witness what happened next, but later, through various channels and fragmented clues, I pieced together the full picture of the events that followed my disappearance."Damn it!"At that same moment, Blair violently pushed aside the person next to her and, ignoring Julian's startled cry, sprinted into the rain, chasing after the car that had just vanished. But the car had already vanished in

Blair's face instantly darkened. She shot Julian a cold, sharp glare and ordered him in a low, stern voice to the rose garden in the back.Julian didn't dare disobey and followed her meekly.I walked to the second-floor window. From this angle, I had a clear view of everything in the garden.Like an enraged lioness, Blair shoved Julian away forcefully."Are you out of your goddamn mind? Are you trying to drag the entire Valerius Group into a scandal because of your stupidity?!"Julian's defiance melted away, replaced by the wounded, flustered look of someone who'd been neglected. His trembling hand pulled a piece of paper from his inner pocket. It was a hospital ultrasound report.Even from this distance, I could hear fragments of his words."I know I shouldn't have come… but I heard we're having a baby! And it's already nine weeks, this is a critical time.""You told everyone that baby was Kevin's, but we both know he's my flesh and blood! He is my own son! You were all over me last n
