Chapter 3

Author: Sael Walker
I could practically feel my eyes rolling into the back of my head.

Nobody was trying to take him. Nobody.

Since Violet had come out swinging, I wasn't about to back down either.

I straightened my back, let my eyes go red, and put on an expression of pure innocence that even Ryan couldn't top.

"Vi… I know I grew up poor out in the sticks, but Mom and Dad taught me that family comes first! Ryan collapsed out of nowhere—his face went totally white! I only did CPR because I was scared he was dying! How can anyone say I hit him? If you really think I meant to hurt him, fine—I'll pay with my own life!"

And with that, I lunged straight for the wall.

"Pete! That's not what your sister meant!"

Mom and Dad panicked, rushing to grab me.

My little speech had hit them right in the guilt, and they whipped around to glare at Violet.

"How dare you talk to your brother like that? He just got back and doesn't know anything! What kind of older sister says things like that?"

Violet curled her lip in disgust, narrowing her eyes at me.

"Mom, just let him go. He's been running wild in the countryside—he has no manners!"

She pulled out a gilt-edged invitation and slapped it on the table.

"The invitations for Mr. Harrington's birthday gala came to the office. Our whole family is named on it, and it specifically says Pete has to come."

The room went dead silent. Even Ryan forgot to play victim.

"I was wondering why a family as elite as the Harringtons would invite us. Now it's clear. Ryan's engagement to Sophia must be locked in, and Mr. Harrington wants to meet his future son-in-law."

She shot me a scornful glance.

"And somehow this little savage gets to ride the coattails. Do us all a favor—stay home and don't embarrass Ryan or screw this up for him."

My stomach dropped.

Ride the coattails? This was clearly a warning shot from the boss.

After I passed the interview, Mr. Harrington had planned to ship me straight to Harrington Group's overseas division to groom me as a direct successor. Then the Sanders family suddenly called me back, and Mr. Harrington gave me a month of family leave to properly reconnect.

Now, with that month almost up, I still hadn't reached out.

Maybe I should text him an explanation?

I hesitated, and Mom, thinking I was upset by Violet's words, immediately laid down the law.

"He's your brother. If the Harringtons specifically invited him, he's going. If anyone's missing, or they think our family's falling apart, what happens to this engagement?"

Great. Time to face the big boss.

The night of the gala.

I was sipping water, trying to psych myself up to face Mr. Harrington, when I heard muffled cursing coming from the coatroom.

"Why are Mom and Dad suddenly defending Pete?! Why can't he just drop dead?! Both of those biased old bastards should die! Everything in this family should be mine! Sophia should be mine!"

Through the crack in the door, I saw Ryan waving scissors at the painting scroll we were supposed to give Mr. Harrington.

"Nobody gets to be happy!"

Snap.

The blade sliced through the scroll.

At that moment, he must've sensed something—he whipped his head around and locked eyes with me.

Before I could react, he came charging out, shoving the scissors into my hands.

"Pete! What are you doing?!"

Pointing at the ruined painting, Ryan screamed at the top of his lungs, "How could you destroy the gift for Mr. Harrington?! I know you're jealous, but that doesn't mean you can sabotage our whole family!"

Wow.

He was really trying to pin this whole mess on me.

Ryan dropped to his knees, hamming up the victim act with everything he had."Mom… please… just give us your blessing… Vi and I grew up together. What we have is real…"Mom trembled with rage, unable to get a single word out.I watched this absurd scene, tightened my grip on the golf club, and smiled."Vi, have you lost your damn mind?"With a face full of grief, I swung the club in a wide arc and brought it down on Violet's calf with brutal force."He's a fake heir, and you're the real daughter! You'd betray your own parents for some outsider? You've been possessed by a demon!"I kept swinging, shouting my heartbreak with every strike."Vi, we share the same blood—hurting you hurts me too! But for this family, for the Sanders name, I'm taking care of this villain today! I have to wake you up! A family that stands together thrives! We have to cut out the cancer!"With every word, the club came down harder. Sharp, crisp cracks of bone echoed through the room.Violet screamed i

The golf club came down hard on Ryan's back."AAH—!"He yelped in pain, nearly tumbling out of his chair.Violet screamed in terror, scrambling across the study with her hands over her head. Papers and files flew everywhere like confetti—the room instantly turned into a war zone."Stop! Stop! It's me, Violet! I'm your sister!"She ducked and shouted, trying to make herself heard.I ignored her, swinging the club with relentless fury, aiming for the fleshy parts:"What kind of nonsense is this? Who stays up half the night stealing from their own family?! A thief is a thief! Sneaking around in the dark and pretending to be my sister? I'll beat you senseless!"A few more hits landed, and the two of them were shrieking, begging for mercy."What's going on? What the hell is happening?!"Mom and Dad, woken by the commotion, came running in still in their pajamas, panicked. The lights flicked on.Mom and Dad froze, completely stunned. In front of them were two disheveled figures

Mr. Harrington's words from that day still echoed in her mind.Pete was Harrington Group's chosen core talent—his future was unlimited. And here she was, about to risk offending Mr. Harrington's rising star… all for a fake little brother whose reputation was already in the gutter.Violet hesitated.Sensing her wavering, Ryan steeled himself. He grabbed her hand and pressed his face into her palm."Vi…"He lifted those dependent, fragile eyes to hers, his voice low, hoarse, and trembling with vulnerability."Just help me this once… and I'll do anything…"Violet's body jolted. She stared at the handsome, broken man in front of her in disbelief, her voice shaking."Ryan… you… you knew all along?"She had always carried a quiet, secret longing for this non-blood-related brother.Ryan lowered his gaze. A flicker of disgust crossed his eyes, but his voice stayed tender."You've always been so good to me, Vi. How could I not notice? Before… I just couldn't face your feelings. I wa

Ryan shot back a sleazy little grin.Flipping his phone shut with a look of disgust, Ryan took a deep breath, slapped on a guilty expression, and carried two glasses of whiskey out."Pete…"He walked up to me, eyes slightly red, wearing the face of a man who'd seen the light."Pete, I… I'm sorry. I completely lost my head earlier—I shouldn't have done that to you… I really know I was wrong. This drink is my way of making it up to you. I hope you can forgive me, so we can still be brothers…"He tipped his head back and downed one glass himself, then held the other out to me.I didn't move.He let out a sigh, his voice thick with emotion."Pete… why aren't you drinking? Do you still not forgive me? I know I messed up. If you won't drink, that means you're still angry… Then I'll just have to get down on my knees and beg for your forgiveness…"People around us started whispering and pointing, judging me for being cold.Moral blackmail?I looked at the whiskey and smirked inwardl

Mr. Harrington gestured toward me kneeling on the floor, a note of approval in his voice."This savage you all keep calling crazy… he's exactly the talent I had my eye on. As for this second son of the Sanders family…"He glanced at Ryan, who was still struggling not to collapse, his eyes full of contempt."Dreaming of becoming my son-in-law using someone else's corporate welcome package? I think you might need to get your head examined."The words hit the Sanders family like a thunderbolt."Oh… so it was all a misunderstanding…"Mom and Dad forced out awkward laughs.Ryan, on the other hand, looked absolutely venomous. He had managed to lose on all fronts: failed to latch onto the Harrington family's coattails and became the laughingstock of the room. His jaw clenched so hard he probably wished he could sink into the floor. As for me? I wasn't about to let him off that easy.Quick as lightning, I smacked my thigh and sprang to my feet. Violet and Ryan were still deep in their own little fantasy, completely missing the sarcasm dripping from Mr. Harrington's words."Mr. Harrington, just look at this painting scroll! Our family spent six months hunting this down from a private collector!"She gestured at the pile of shredded paper on the floor, practically wailing, "We wanted to surprise you, but this monster destroyed it!"Ryan frowned, clutching his chest with the expression of a long-suffering martyr."Yeah, sir… my brother just can't stand to see me succeed. He even said that even if the gift was ruined, I shouldn't be able to face you with my head held high…"Mr. Harrington took off his sunglasses, letting his gaze rest on me with a flicker of amusement. Then, casually, he asked, "Oh? That so?"I dropped into a flawless, practiced slide-kneel—one knee on the floor, both hands holding up the scissors, loyalty written all over my face, my voice booming with shameless devotion."Please, Your Majes—uh, I mean, M
