Chapter 3

作者: The Evil Villain
I could not help but let out a bitter laugh as I locked eyes with Alan.

"The kitchen was under the watchful eye of a camera. Just take a look for yourself..."

"There's no need for that," Alan interrupted me sharply, standing his ground.

"Jessica would never lie."

His words stabbed me, each heartbeat amplifying the pain in my chest.

Clearly, Alan was no longer concerned about me.

However, in the next moment, he unexpectedly set a first aid kit before me.

"Patch yourself up. Once the cake's done, just leave. Hospital or wherever, your choice."

With that, he turned away, taking Jessica to the living room to gently tend to her wounds.

I fought through the pain in my hand, finishing the cake, which was probably the last thing I would ever do for Alan.

That was what I told myself.

I cleaned up the kitchen, set the cake just right, and walked out the door.

He did not look at me, not even once, before I shut the door behind me.

The night air was cool, but I felt an unexpected lightness.

On my way to the hospital, a figure ran toward me. It was Elliot.

Out of breath, he seized my wrist, examining my injury, his eyes brimming with tears.

"Ruby, you're hurt so badly. Did he do this to you?

"He had you in this life, why didn't he treasure you? Just wait, I'll end him!"

I shook off his hand, icy as the night. "Stay out of it."

However, he just stood there, tears falling from his bloodshot eyes, his look sincere. I was frozen.

The man who had wounded me deeply in a previous life was suddenly shedding tears for me.

The one who had loved me deeply back then had become the cause of all my pain.

Elliot, hands shaking, pulled out a share transfer agreement and laid it before me.

"In my previous life, I wronged you in countless ways. This gift... It's for your birthday, but it's also my way of saying I'm sorry.

"I owe you more than I can ever repay... Can you ever forgive me?"

I tried to keep my distance from Elliot ever since my rebirth, but he clung to me relentlessly.

He showered me with gifts, from trinkets to lavish homes and cars, driving his family's empire into ruin.

With a heavy heart, I told him, "I can't forgive you. I won't take these things. Your parents worked hard to build what they had. Don't let it crumble because of you."

Elliot's tears flowed freely as he clutched my hand, his voice breaking, "Without you, all this means nothing to me..."

His plea was lost in the wail of an ambulance siren.

A stretcher was hurriedly wheeled from the ambulance towards the hospital doors.

"Move aside! Move aside!"

"Ruby! What did I ever do to you? Why would you poison me?"

It was not until I heard her voice that I realized Jessica was the one on the stretcher.

In the next instant, I felt a slap across my face. As I turned around, I saw Alan, his eyes blazing, standing beside me.

He ripped Elliot's hand from mine and shouted, "Ruby, you've gone too far this time!"

Before I could reply, Alan was already dragging Elliot away, following Jessica into the hospital.

I touched my tingling cheek and managed a wry smile. Then, I turned and walked away, leaving Alan with that final image of me.

'Maybe leaving him with this impression in the end wasn't so bad,' I thought.

I booked a flight to Euroland for the next day on my phone.

I planned to spend the night in a hotel and, after picking up the divorce papers in the morning, head straight to the airport.

However, as I walked, my phone rang. It was Alan.

My hand shook, and before I knew it, I had picked up the call.

His voice was frantic. "Ruby! Jessica's heart condition flared up because of what you did! Get to the hospital now for a compatibility test!"

Jessica's silence was golden. It was all the confirmation Alan needed. He laughed so hard he cried, taking a moment to savor his victory. Then, standing tall, he planted his boot on Jessica's face, his voice dripping with loathing."Please, whatever you do, don't go looking for Elliot. I only brought him into this to torture you both."However, now, I've come up with a fun little game. Let's make a bet. If he's willing to come rescue you, then I'll let you both off the hook. I bet he won't show."Stung by Alan's relentless digs, Jessica, in a fit of defiance, grabbed the cellphone before her and called Elliot. He picked up quickly, and she did not waste a second."Elliot! Come save me!"...The voice that came through Elliot's phone shattered all my baseless hopes.Alan was still the same Alan, but the mystery of why he did not love me anymore in my new life... I just did not care to find out anymore.Elliot's voice dropped to an angry hiss on the other end of the line. "Jess

Rewinding time just a little, Alan listened to Jessica's words, a sense of defeat washing over him as tears streamed down his face.Jessica's laughter echoed, a sound that grated on his ears, growing more mocking with each passing second. The truth was out in the open, and whether it was time to apologize to me or seek forgiveness, Jessica had become utterly irrelevant.Alan had no interest in enduring her hysterical rants any longer. With tears still on his face, he signaled his bodyguard, who swiftly pinned Jessica to the floor.Jessica's smugness vanished, replaced by sheer panic. "What... What are you doing?! You're insane!"Alan had his moments of madness, indeed. In his previous life, he had gone to bloody lengths for me, ensuring Jessica and Elliot paid the ultimate price. It was a testament to his capacity for vengeance. That explained why Jessica was terrified to confront Alan again in his new life. Even Elliot could not hide his fear around him. Then, as Jessica felt

Staring at the incessant ringing, I was plunged into a sea of contemplation.I had my doubts. The Alan in my new life, involved with Jessica, did not seem like the same Alan who took revenge for me after I died. However, the idea that he and Elliot had swapped souls after I was reborn was a whole other level of weird, and there was a lot that just did not make sense. The biggest thing that stuck out to me was something Elliot blurted out after bugging me for ages."I know I was wrong." That line had not sat right with me. If he had been the Alan from before, racked with guilt for not saving me, he would have apologized, not admitted a mistake. That was the sort of thing someone said when begging for forgiveness. It sounded more like something the real Elliot would have said, after carrying the weight of how he had hurt me and living with regret.Maybe he had seen through Jessica's fake love and realized he had thrown away the real thing with me for a fool like that, and that

Back then, Alan had dismissed the idea with a snort. Considering how differently I was living in my new life compared to my supposed past one, I must have gotten a second chance too.How could I feel anything for a man who had literally ripped my heart out?Jessica seemed to connect with Alan's heartache, pulling out her phone to show him snapshots of Elliot and I together, popping up side by side in different places. There was even a shot of us walking into a hotel, a hotel Alan recognized all too well. It was the same one he had booked for my business trip. His mind reeled with the revelation. He dialed the hotel in a frenzy, and even though the receptionist assured him I had checked in solo, the storm clouds of doubt refused to clear from his heart. In the days that followed, Jessica kept popping up, almost like she was drawn to him, yet she kept it professional.Alan could sense the faint vibes of interest she was sending his way, but his mind was elsewhere. The more he saw

"No way!"Alan scrambled to check his phone, and there it was: the crash was the top news story. He read and reread the article until he had to accept it. I was gone, dead on the very flight he had booked for me.Jessica, oblivious to his shock, sidled up with a brazenness that was almost impressive."If I'd known Ruby was going to die, I would've convinced her to give me her heart. Then, I could've been the one with you.""Get lost!"Alan cut Jessica off with a fiery glare, his eyes blazing. "What on earth makes you think you can take Ruby's place?"Caught off guard by Alan's icy retort, Jessica paused, then reached out to touch him."What's gotten into you, Alan...""Cut the act."With a look of revulsion, Alan jerked his hand away, his voice icy."You don't even have a heart condition, do you? Have you been playing this part so long you've started to believe it?"Ruby probably doesn't know. By the time I found out in our previous life, it was too late to rescue her from

Panic alarms blared in my head, and the agony of past memories flooded my thoughts.Fear crept into my voice as I stammered, "No, I'm not coming."Alan, on the other end, exploded like a cat with its tail stepped on."Ruby, don't bite the hand that feeds you! Just cooperate when I'm asking nicely! Don't make me drag you here myself."My heart turned to ice, my mind a whirlwind of confusion. I ended the call in a flash and shut off my phone.I ducked into a dingy motel on the street and got a room without giving my ID. Alan would not find me there.I spent the night wide awake, my mind a chaotic replay of my past life's final moments. One thing was clear. I had to keep away from him.As dawn's light began to seep through, I splashed water on my face and made my way to the nearby County Clerk's Office.I pushed through the door as they opened, handed over my divorce papers with Alan. The clerk glanced at the documents and stamped them without a word. I was out in less than five
