Silas Vale died on a Tuesday.

At least, that’s what the headlines said.

The news broke before the coroner signed the certificate. “Billionaire heir dies in solo crash. Police rule out foul play. Family requests privacy.” Sonia Vale read those words on her phone as a nurse wheeled her past rows of hospital beds, each beep and hum around her sounding like an accusation.

She hadn’t even seen his body.

They told her he hit a metal pole, that he lost control at a bend on Goldcrest Drive. They told her there was blood. But not once did they let her look him in the eye. Not once did they let her say goodbye.

The hospital smelled like antiseptic and grief. Her heels clicked too loudly against the floor. Her blazer felt too heavy on her shoulders. She hadn’t slept. Hadn’t eaten. She’d just landed from France when her mother’s voice cracked through the phone:

“Come home. It’s Silas.”

That was all.

And now, as she stood outside the morgue doors, she realized her hands weren’t shaking. Her body wasn’t crying. It wasn’t doing anything at all. It was like her mind had zipped up her heart in a black bag, just like they zipped his body, and decided to walk on without it.

A nurse appeared, clipboard in hand. "Ms. Vale... your mother has signed for a private cremation. Immediate. By her request."

Sonia blinked. “Cremation? Already?”

“She..uh..she said you’d understand. She didn’t want you to see him like that.”

Like what? Burnt? Beaten? Not her brother?

Her mouth opened, but no words came. She just nodded, then turned and walked into the white hallway, her thoughts louder than the world.

---

The funeral was smaller than she expected.

No guests. No cameras. Just Sonia, her mother, and an urn she couldn’t touch. She sat in the front row, staring at the polished wood table where her twin’s ashes were supposed to be. Her mother dabbed at invisible tears with a silk handkerchief. No one spoke.

Silas wasn’t the type to die quietly.

He wasn’t the type to crash his car alone at night either.

Sonia clenched her jaw. Something didn’t fit. Silas had been reckless, yes..but stupid? Never. And where was his phone? His last texts? No accident footage. No police report made public. No mention of the elite boarding school he was supposed to return to that very morning..Daxton Academy.

When the service ended, she didn’t cry. She walked into his old bedroom like a girl on autopilot and shut the door.

The air still smelled like his cologne.

His guitar still sat in the corner with a broken string he swore he'd never fix.

She opened his closet.

Everything looked untouched except for a plain gray hoodie folded too neatly on his bed.

Something about it felt… off.

She picked it up.

A soft thud hit the floor.

A leather-bound notebook, thick and worn, with Silas’s handwriting etched across the cover.

“Trust no one. Start here.”

Sonia froze.

She sat on the edge of the bed, flipping through pages of scribbles, codes, maps of Daxton’s campus, names she didn’t recognize, phrases circled in red. At the top of one page, two words stood out in thick ink:

"The Cartel of Crowns."

A chill raced down her back.

Her brother hadn’t just died. He was hunting something.

And if he was right, someone had gotten to him first.

---

By midnight, Sonia stood in front of her bathroom mirror, her scissors trembling.

She cut her hair in silent, ruthless chunks.

She bound her chest with strips of athletic tape.

She zipped herself into his black uniform blazer.

And when she stared at her reflection, for the first time since the funeral…

She didn’t see herself.

She saw him.

Not the real Silas.

But the one she needed to be.

---

The next morning, her mother found her suitcase packed and ready.

“Where are you going?” she asked, eyes puffy, lips tight.

Sonia didn’t blink. “I’m going to Daxton.”

Her mother froze. “Silas’s school?”

“Our school.”

“You can’t.”

“I already transferred,” she lied.

“Sonia, please...”

“I’m not asking, Mother,” she said, stepping past her. “You lost a son. I lost my twin. I’m not losing myself too.”

---

As the jet lifted into the sky, Sonia held the notebook like a lifeline.

Page after page bled with paranoia, secrets, and fear.

But there, buried halfway through, one name was underlined twice.

Eric Blackbourne.

A boy Silas didn’t trust.

And the only one she’d have to face first.

---

She lands on Daxton’s private airstrip in the rain, blazer soaked, hair plastered down. A tall figure waits by the stone gates, arms crossed, hood low.

“Silas Vale,” he says, voice sharp like a blade.

She lifts her chin.

“Yes.”

The figure steps forward, eyes narrowing.

“You’re late. And different.”

Sonia’s heart skips.

Because she knows that voice.

She’s heard it whispered in the background of Silas’s videos.

It’s Eric Blackbourne.

And he’s already suspicious.

A faint drizzle pattered against the tin roof, each drop sounding heavier than the last, as if the world itself carried the weight of what they had uncovered.Sonia sat at the corner of the mattress, watching her brother’s pale face. The fever had broken a little, but his skin still felt clammy when she touched his forehead. The Daniel she remembered mischievous, witty, always ready with a sarcastic jab seemed like a ghost hovering beneath the surface.“He used to love the rain,” she whispered, almost to herself.Eric, leaning against the window frame, glanced at her. “What do you mean?”“When we were kids,” Sonia said, her voice softer than usual, “we’d sneak out during storms. Daniel would stand there, arms wide open, like the rain was washing everything clean. He said it felt like freedom.” Her throat tightened. “Now he can barely open his eyes.”Eric shifted, as though the memory pierced him too. “He’ll come back. You got him out. That’s the hardest part.”“No,” Sonia said sharply

Sonia stared at the ceiling of the safe house. It was cracked and water-stained, but she welcomed the stillness. After the fire. After the screams. After the smoke choking their lungs and the sound of gunfire echoing in her ears silence was a gift.Daniel lay on a mattress across from her, wrapped in bandages and fevered sweat. His breathing was shallow, but steady. His presence grounded her, but it also haunted her. He was alive. But the things they had done to him...“You haven’t slept,” Eric said from the doorway, holding a steaming mug of tea.Sonia took it wordlessly.“He’s stable. Silas checked the vitals.”She nodded, sipping the tea. It was bitter. Perfect.Eric sat beside her. “They drugged him, didn’t they?”“More than that.” Her voice was thin. “They rewired his mind. He said they called it ‘emotional remapping.’ Like they wanted to make him a weapon.”Eric exhaled. “Daxton was just the prototype. What they’re doing now it's global.”Sonia’s eyes flicked to her brother. “An

The compound in Lagos didn’t look like much from the outside just another abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Peeling paint, rusted gates, overgrown weeds. But Sonia had learned by now that the most dangerous places were often the ones dressed in camouflage. They crouched behind a row of broken-down trucks as dusk fell, casting long shadows across the courtyard. Silas scanned the perimeter through binoculars, his face unreadable.“No armed guards,” he muttered. “No patrols. Just cameras.”Jason frowned. “That doesn’t sit right. Either they’re arrogant... or they’re watching from somewhere else.”Echo crouched beside Sonia, fingers twitching nervously. “How do we know this isn’t a trap?”Sonia adjusted the comms in her ear. “We don’t. But we’ve come too far to back out now.”Eric placed a hand on her shoulder. “We get in, we find the labs, and we get whoever’s inside out. Fast.”Silas nodded toward the eastern wall. “There’s a service tunnel. It’s old probably

The Foundation Gala was a grand illusion an opulent symphony of wealth, power, and deception.Held in the heart of Paris at the Palais Du Verité, a place once known for housing revolutions and now rebranded for humanitarian elegance, the venue glittered with imported crystal, velvet-draped pillars, and the kind of silence only extreme money could buy.Sonia stepped out of the sleek black SUV, her heels clicking against the marble steps. She wore a silver dress sculpted to her frame minimal, sharp, and impossible to ignore. It wasn’t just for show. Sewn into the seams were signal disruptors, tracking patches, and one tiny blade. Just in case.Eric stepped out behind her, donning a classic tuxedo with dark satin lapels and a look that said "keep walking or regret it." Beneath the crisp shirt, a body cam hummed silently. He offered her his arm not for romance tonight, but optics. They looked like a power couple. And in some ways, they were. Just not the kind this gala had planned for.In

They holed up in a safe house on the mainland an old print shop Echo had rigged into a surveillance den. Rain pattered lightly against the windows, but inside, the storm was digital. Sonia stood over Echo’s shoulder, watching lines of code unravel secrets once meant to stay buried. The flash drive Daniel had left behind was a goldmine encrypted pathways, access logs, and account transfers stretching back nearly a decade.Echo leaned back, rubbing her eyes. “You’re gonna want to sit for this.”“I’m good,” Sonia muttered, her voice tight.“No, really,” Echo insisted. “This goes way deeper than BrightCore or Daxton. Daniel traced the funding all the way up.”“To who?” Jason asked from across the room.Echo pressed a key. A wall of photos appeared executives, politicians, military advisors. And at the center of it all…Alexander Bright.Sonia blinked. “No… that’s not possible. He’s dead.”“That’s what they said,” Echo replied grimly. “But according to the files, he’s very much alive and r

Night fell over Lagos like a slow curtain, golden and pink melting into ink. The streets quieted only slightly just enough to move in shadows.Sonia crouched beside the delivery truck parked outside the CortexCare facility. She checked her watch. 9:57 p.m. Echo’s intel had been right. The cameras along the west perimeter blinked out at exactly 10:00 p.m. every Thursday. Like clockwork.Jason whispered through the comms. “Window open. We have twenty-five minutes.”Sonia moved first, slipping past the delivery bay’s rusted gate. Eric was on her heels, followed by Echo and Jason. Silas stayed back, monitoring the feed. The moment they stepped inside the facility, Sonia’s stomach churned. It was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of silence that wasn’t peace, but preparation. She expected to find sterile halls and soft music like Daxton, but this place was worse slicker, cleaner, more modern. Deceit didn’t need masks anymore. It wore white paint and soft lighting.“This way,” Echo murmured, holdi
