Silas didn’t answer right away. He stared out into the dark, jaw tight, eyes distant. “Matches burn out,” he said eventually. “But sometimes they start fires.”

Sonia drew her knees closer, her arms wrapped around them. “That’s what I’m afraid of.”

Silas glanced sideways at her. “You afraid of what’s next?”

“No.” She exhaled. “I’m afraid I’ll stop feeling afraid. That I’ll get used to this fighting, running, bleeding for something we’re not even sure will hold.”

Silas nodded slowly. “But we keep going anyway.”

The door creaked again. Eric leaned on the frame, looking pale but steadier than before. One arm was in a sling now, but his stance was solid. “Am I interrupting?”

Sonia stood immediately. “You should be resting.”

He shrugged with his good shoulder. “I rested enough to know I hate it.”

Silas stood, gave them both a long look, and murmured, “I’ll give you two a minute.”

As he disappeared into the inn, Eric stepped out beside Sonia, his voice quiet. “You really lit a match back the

The van tore through the forest road, its tires spitting gravel, headlights cutting through the trees like twin blades. Inside, the silence was pierced only by Eric’s labored breaths and the low murmur of Rivers giving instructions from the passenger seat. Sonia sat beside Eric, clutching his hand, her other pressed firmly against the bloodstained towel on his side. Her jeans were soaked with it. So were her fingers.“Almost there,” Rivers called back. “Fifteen minutes.”Eric groaned. Sonia looked down. His skin was pale, almost waxen in the cold light. His eyes fluttered open, and for a second, they met hers. There was something in them, pain, yes, but something else too.“You stayed,” he rasped. She nodded, too choked up to speak.Outside, the trees blurred past like ghosts.Behind them, Daxton Academy smoldered. Not just the physical building but the system, the legacy. Sonia could almost feel the tremble in the air, the dominoes toppling. The secrets they’d uploaded were spreading

The cold air inside the greenhouse bit at Sonia’s fingers as she pulled open the rusted grate beneath the fern-covered cistern. Moss clung to the edges like a warning. The tunnel below yawned wide, musty and forgotten. This was the place the school had abandoned but now, it was their path to resurrection.Eric crouched beside her, flashlight between his teeth, his injured arm clutched close to his chest. He didn’t complain. Not once. Sonia could see it in his clenched jaw the pain, the effort it took to stay quiet. But still, he moved.Behind them, Isla adjusted the fuse wires on the chemical setup they’d pieced together from the science lab’s storage. A small mix of potassium permanganate and glycerin would trigger just enough smoke to cause alarm. Not an explosion. Just confusion.“Two minutes,” Isla whispered, eyes on the tiny timer.Sonia gave her a firm nod. Then, she turned to Alex, who held the tablet preloaded with the uplink sequence Silas had sent from the city. A glowing re

By nightfall, Daxton looked even more haunted than Sonia remembered. The corridors buzzed with uneasy silence. Gone were the loud morning drills, the smug clatter of polished shoes on marble floors, the voices barking orders. Now, everything was muted. Whispers carried further than footsteps. People looked over their shoulders more than they looked ahead. Something had shifted and the school could feel it. Sonia moved carefully through the west wing hallway, her blazer folded under her arm, her steps silent against the cold stone tiles. Eric trailed behind, keeping his distance just enough to avoid drawing attention. They didn’t talk. Didn’t need to. They’d been here before, and now they moved like ghosts through the halls, slipping between shadows. From a hidden alcove, Isla stepped out. Her hair was tucked beneath a knit cap, and she wore her old training uniform, but her eyes were sharper than ever. “You weren’t kidding,” she whispered. “The south tower’s basically empty. Most

The morning mist clung to the treetops as Sonia stood by the window, watching the world wake. The smell of damp earth mixed with the faint scent of cedar smoke from the fireplace behind her. Eric was by the table, packing the last of the supplies into a worn backpack, maps, protein bars, a small first aid kit. His movements were precise, almost too careful, like he was trying to keep the worry from leaking into his hands. She hadn’t slept much. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the cracked walls of Daxton, the echoes of betrayal and pain. She heard Isla’s voice, Alex’s silent gaze, the cries of those who had trusted the wrong people. She’d worn Silas’s blazer like armor, but now she wondered if the person inside was strong enough without it.Eric zipped the bag and looked up, meeting her eyes. “Are you ready?” he asked, his voice low.No, she thought. But she nodded anyway. “Yeah.”He crossed the room and touched her shoulder, his thumb brushing her collarbone as if he could cha

Sonia couldn’t help but wonder if the world beyond this small cabin would ever feel normal again. The safe house sat on the edge of a thick forest, its old timber frame creaking every time the wind picked up. She pressed her palm against the cold glass of the window, staring at the mist curling like smoke through the trees. The memory of Daxton’s halls, the screams, the stench of burning, clung to her like a second skin.Behind her, Rivers hunched over the table, a scowl etched deep into his features. He was sorting through the stolen files from Daxton some yellowed with age, others crisp and marked with the Blackbourne seal. His eyes were bloodshot, but he refused to slow down. His fingers traced each page like they might hold the key to everything they’d fought for.Silas stood near the fireplace, his arms folded, the glow from the dying embers painting shadows on his face. He looked older than he had at Daxton, as if every secret they’d uncovered had added a year to his life. Occas
