The morning light filtered through the clouds like a promise muted but steady, unrelenting. Sonia stood in front of the rusted mirror inside a worn-down motel bathroom, staring at her reflection.

No blazer. No tie. No mask.

Just her.

Her hair had grown longer again, brushing her jaw now. Her eyes still rimmed with exhaustion held a fire she didn’t quite recognize. Not fear. Not anger.

Conviction.

Behind her, Eric leaned in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, watching her without speaking. He didn’t ask if she was ready. He knew that readiness didn’t always come with calm.

It came with choice.

“You sure about this?” he asked softly.

She nodded, turning from the mirror to face him. “They tried to silence us. We’re going to be louder.”

That afternoon, Rivers set up the transmission an untraceable stream that would cut across several live channels and social media feeds at once. A journalist from a major outlet had agreed to carry the story under anonymity and with bodyguards posted

Night had already blanketed the city by the time Sonia and Eric reached Daxton’s gates. The familiar archway loomed against a dark sky, its iron lettering glinting under the harsh glow of the security lights. Every brick, every window held a memory and a weight that pressed against Sonia’s ribs.“You okay?” Eric asked as they slipped through a side entrance. His voice was a low murmur, gentle and careful.Sonia paused, feeling her hands trembling just a little as she took in the empty grounds. “I thought I was ready,” she admitted, forcing a breath past the knot in her throat. “But coming back here it feels like stepping into a ghost.”He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him in the chilly air. “That’s because we’re not who we were before,” he said. “And that’s okay. It’s what you do next that matters.”Her lips quirked in a tired smile. “Always have an answer, don’t you?”“Trying,” he replied softly. They moved together across the quad, staying close to t

The plan took shape faster than Sonia thought it would.By mid-afternoon, they’d set up a makeshift command center in a borrowed basement belonging to Alex’s cousin a forgotten storage room beneath a café that hardly anyone ever noticed. Maps of Daxton and the surrounding districts were spread across crates and tables. Eric was leaning over a laptop, fingers flying across the keyboard as he pulled up old schematics they’d retrieved from Silas’s stash.Isla and Alex pored over the blueprints, murmuring to each other as they circled access routes and possible exits. Every so often, one of them would glance up at Sonia, as if to remind themselves that this was real that they were truly stepping into the fight.Sonia felt that weight too. Every move they made tonight would shift the balance forever.Eric glanced up from his laptop. “Press contacts are queued up,” he said. “Once we drop the files, they’ll go public within an hour. Daxton will scramble, but it’ll be too late.”“You’re sure

The city was waking up by the time they reached the old sports center an abandoned gym tucked into a pocket of downtown where Sonia had once trained before Daxton consumed her life. Graffiti sprawled across the cracked walls outside, a sharp contrast to the memories that pulled at her chest as they stepped inside. The place smelled like dust and aged wood, shafts of morning light slicing through broken windows onto warped floors. It was safe, or as safe as they could manage right now.Eric broke the quiet first. “You sure they’ll come?”Sonia nodded without hesitation. “Alex never liked playing by Daxton’s rules. And Isla? Once she hears what we found, she’ll have more questions than we can answer. They’ll come.”He studied her face, then glanced at the files tucked under his arm. “And after that?”Her gaze was steady. “After that, we go public. Every file. Every name. Even if it burns everything they built, we don’t stop.”He exhaled slowly. “And you’re okay if it burns us too?”She

Night settled outside the café windows as they finally closed the laptop and gathered their scattered papers. The air between them felt lighter, charged with purpose rather than fear.“You’re sure Alex will listen?” Eric asked as they pushed open the door and stepped into the cool evening. The city had quieted to a hush; only a few cars glided past, headlights sweeping the empty streets.Sonia pulled her jacket closer. “He will,” she said, more certain than she felt. “He’s been on edge for weeks. I could see it in his face every time Daxton’s name came up. And Isla” she glanced up at him, “Isla will follow his lead. They deserve to know the truth before it reaches them the hard way.”Eric’s brow furrowed thoughtfully. “And the others?”Sonia hesitated. Faces flickered in her mind some kind, some uncertain, some dangerous. “That,” she admitted, “is going to be trickier. Some are too scared to look past what Daxton told them. But if they see someone they trust stand up first…” Her voice

By the time they reached the small café on the edge of town, the adrenaline had faded into a steady sense of purpose. They chose a booth tucked into a corner, its windows facing a sleepy street where most people moved on with their days as if nothing had ever happened at Daxton.Sonia pulled the laptop from her battered satchel and set it between them. “We need to move fast,” she said, her voice firm even though a trace of weariness hung in her eyes. “There are still students trapped back there, some who don’t even realize what they’re part of.”Eric nodded, leaning closer, his knee brushing hers under the table. “And faculty who probably have no clue how deep the Cartel really goes,” he added. “If we leak all of this to the authorities, there’ll be an investigation. But that’s not enough. They’ll need more than proof they’ll need people on the inside.”“You mean like Alex,” she said, glancing at him. “Or Isla. Or anyone who ever gave a damn about something other than following orders
