Adrian did not slow down.

His hand closed around Zara’s wrist as he pulled her through the darkness behind the archive, the sound of shouting and pounding footsteps echoing behind them.

Another gunshot cracked through the tunnel.

Zara flinched.

“Keep moving,” Adrian said.

The passage narrowed sharply, forcing them to run single file. The air grew colder with every step, carrying the scent of damp stone and running water.

In her fist, the lily pendant dug into her skin.

Isabella.

The name repeated in her mind with every heartbeat.

A name she had never heard before.

A name that might belong to her mother.

The tunnel sloped downward. Water glimmered ahead, catching the faint emergency lights that flickered along the ceiling.

A river flowed beneath the estate.

Not a stream.

A real underground river, dark and restless, disappearing into the shadows beyond the stone arches.

Zara stopped in shock.

“There’s a river under your house?”

Adrian finally released her wrist and turned, breathing hard.

“Under the original estate. My great-grandfather built the lower tunnels around it.”

“For what?”

His expression was grim.

“Escape.”

The answer sent a chill through her.

Behind them, voices echoed through the archive.

“Check the river exit!”

Adrian’s head snapped toward the sound.

“They’re coming.”

Zara looked around desperately. A narrow wooden boat was tied to an iron ring in the wall.

“You’re kidding.”

“I wish I were.”

He untied the rope with quick, practiced movements.

“You’ve done this before.”

A beat of silence.

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

How many secrets did this family have?

Adrian stepped into the boat first, then held out his hand.

For a second, Zara hesitated.

Everything in the last few hours had taught her that trusting anyone was dangerous.

But the voices were getting closer.

She took his hand.

His grip tightened just enough to steady her as she climbed in.

The boat rocked sharply.

Adrian pushed away from the wall with one strong shove.

They drifted into the current.

Darkness swallowed them almost immediately.

Only the weak emergency lights behind them remained, shrinking with every second.

Then a flashlight beam swept across the tunnel entrance.

“There!”

A shout.

Adrian grabbed the oar and pulled hard.

The boat surged forward.

Something splashed into the water behind them.

A second later, a bullet struck the stone arch above Zara’s head.

Fragments rained down.

She ducked instinctively.

“Are they trying to kill us?”

Adrian rowed harder, jaw clenched.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not reassuring!”

“It’s the truth.”

The river carried them beneath a series of low arches. The ceiling dipped so close that Adrian had to duck as he rowed.

Behind them, the flashlight beams disappeared.

Either their pursuers had lost sight of them or chosen not to follow.

Neither possibility felt safe.

For several minutes, the only sounds were the scrape of the oar and the rush of water.

Zara finally looked down at the pendant in her palm.

Silver.

Cold.

Delicate.

A lily carved with astonishing detail.

On the back, almost invisible in the dim light, were two engraved letters.

I.M.

Isabella.

Her throat tightened.

“What if she’s dead?”

The question escaped before she could stop it.

Adrian’s rowing slowed.

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because I’m done pretending I have answers.”

The exhaustion in his voice surprised her.

He looked different here, stripped of the mansion, the suit, the controlled elegance of the Moretti heir.

Just a man rowing through a hidden river beneath his family’s house while someone hunted them through the dark.

Zara stared at him for a moment.

Then she asked the question that had been building since the archive.

“Did your uncle recognize me?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t believe that.”

He looked up, meeting her eyes across the narrow boat.

“I think he recognized the pendant before he recognized you.”

Zara glanced down at the lily.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning Isabella Moretti used to wear one exactly like it.”

The river seemed to go silent.

“Moretti?”

Adrian nodded once.

The word hit her harder than the gunshot.

Moretti.

Not a stranger.

Not an employee.

Family.

Her fingers closed around the pendant.

“No.”

“It may not mean what you think.”

“What else could it mean?”

He opened his mouth, then stopped.

Neither of them wanted to say the possibility aloud.

The current carried them into a wider chamber where moonlight spilled through a grate high above.

For the first time, Zara could see Adrian clearly.

There was blood on his sleeve.

She leaned forward sharply.

“You’re hurt.”

He glanced down as if noticing it for the first time.

“It’s not mine.”

That should have reassured her.

Instead, it made her stomach turn.

Luca.

The archive.

The gunshot.

“Do you think your uncle is alive?”

Adrian’s face became unreadable.

“I don’t know.”

The same answer again.

But this time she heard the fear beneath it.

The river narrowed once more, and the boat scraped against stone before emerging into a hidden canal lined with old brick walls.

A rusted iron ladder rose toward a trapdoor above.

Adrian tied the boat silently.

“We go up from here.”

“Where does it lead?”

“Outside the estate.”

“Where exactly?”

“A boathouse near the old vineyard.”

Zara followed him to the ladder.

Halfway up, she stopped.

“Adrian.”

He looked down at her.

“If Isabella was a Moretti… and my father hid me…”

The words caught in her throat.

He waited.

Zara forced herself to continue.

“Are we trying to find out who I am…”

Her voice trembled.

“Or whether we should never have married?”

The question hung between them in the cold air.

For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely shaken.

Not by the chase.

Not by the gunshots.

By her question.

He climbed the rest of the ladder without answering.

The trapdoor creaked open.

Rain poured down from the night sky.

Adrian stepped out first, then reached back for her.

Zara took his hand again.

Warm.

Steady.

Dangerously familiar.

As she emerged into the storm, she realized something that frightened her even more than the secrets buried beneath the estate.

In less than one night, she had begun to trust the one person who might be connected to the truth she feared most.

And somewhere beyond the rain, a man who had raised her was missing; while the name Isabella Moretti echoed through her mind like a memory she had never lived.

The room seemed to lose all warmth.Zara looked at Adrian. He had gone perfectly still, one hand still wrapped around her wrist. Not surprised. Not confused.Caught.“What does that mean?” she whispered.Adrian didn’t answer.Outside, the rain dripped steadily from the roof.“Zara,” her father’s voice came again, weaker this time. “Open the door.”She stared at Adrian.“Why would he say that?”A long silence. Then Adrian released her wrist.“Because he knows something I haven’t told you.” The words landed heavily. Fear rose in her chest again, sharp and immediate. “What haven’t you told me?” He looked toward the door, then back at her. “Open it first.” “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one I can give right now.” Zara searched his face, trying to decide whether she was looking at a husband, an ally, or another man keeping her in the dark. Outside, her father coughed violently. The sound broke through her hesitation. She crossed the room and unlocked the door.

The storm refused to end.Hours seemed to pass in fragments of rain, firelight, and unanswered questions.Zara had stopped trying to make sense of the timeline. Wedding. Archive. Gunshots. Isabella. The river. The vineyard. It felt less like one night and more like several lives stitched together badly.Adrian eventually stood and disappeared into the small kitchen. She heard cupboards opening, water running, the muted clink of ceramic. When he returned, he carried two mugs.“Coffee,” he said.Zara accepted one carefully. It was strong, bitter, and unexpectedly good.“You keep emergency coffee in abandoned properties too?”“Now that,” Adrian said, sitting across from her, “is completely normal behavior.”The faint smile that followed surprised both of them. For a moment, the cottage almost felt safe. Then the clock on the wall ticked to 2:17 a.m.And Adrian’s phone rang. Both of them froze. The sound was unnaturally loud in the quiet room.Adrian stared at the screen. His expression c

Rain swallowed the world outside the boathouse. It fell in silver sheets across the abandoned vineyard, turning the gravel paths into streams and the rows of vines into dark, shifting shadows. Zara stood beneath the narrow awning, water dripping from the ends of her hair, the lily pendant still clenched in her hand. Adrian closed the trapdoor behind them and slid the rusted bolt into place. For the first time since they had fled the archive, there was no sound of footsteps. No shouting. No alarms. Only rain. And the silence between them. “This place is abandoned?” Zara asked. “Officially.” “Unofficially?” A faint, humorless curve touched his mouth. “My family keeps too many places that are officially abandoned.” She should have been exhausted. Instead, her mind felt painfully awake. Isabella Moretti. The name had changed everything. If the woman connected to her birth belonged to Adrian’s family, then the mystery was no longer about a hidden past. It was about blood.

The words struck harder than a slap.Zara stared at Luca Moretti, certain she had misheard him.“What did you say?”Luca’s face remained unreadable in the flashlight’s pale glow.“I said your father disappeared because of you.”“No.” The denial came instantly. “That doesn’t make any sense.”“It rarely does at the beginning.”Adrian stepped between them, his voice sharp. “Explain.”Luca ignored him. His attention stayed on Zara.“Daniel Vale reopened your file three days ago.”Zara’s pulse quickened.“Matteo said that.”“He didn’t tell you why.”Luca reached into his coat and produced a folded document. Water stained the edges, as if it had been carried through the rain.“He requested access to sealed records connected to your birth.”Zara hesitated before taking it.At the bottom of the page, above a blurred signature, she read:Reason for request: immediate risk to subject.Subject.Not daughter.A cold shiver ran through her.“What risk?”Luca looked at Adrian before answering.“The
