The Warning

Sophia Bennett had a problem.

She was curious.

Not normally curious.

Dangerously curious.

The kind of curious that made her read an entire office disciplinary report because she wanted to know why someone’s name had been underlined three times.

The kind that made her investigate things that had absolutely nothing to do with her.

And apparently, working at Vale Corporation had given that particular flaw a very large playground.

Sophia stared at the spreadsheet on her screen.

Then at the report beside it.

Then back at the spreadsheet.

Something was wrong.

Again.

She clicked through another file.

“No.”

Another.

“That can’t be right.”

Another.

“Definitely not right.”

Claire appeared beside her desk carrying two folders.

“What isn’t right?”

Sophia pointed at the screen.

“The numbers.”

Claire looked at them.

“They look like numbers.”

“That’s not helpful.”

“I wasn’t trying to be helpful.”

Sophia sighed.

“The European employee turnover figures don’t match the internal complaints.”

Claire’s expression changed slightly.

“What do you mean?”

Sophia turned her monitor toward her.

“Look.”

Claire leaned down.

Sophia pointed at the figures.

“Turnover increased by twenty-three percent in certain departments. But according to the official reports, employee complaints barely changed.”

“So?”

“So employees don’t usually leave in large numbers because they’re suddenly allergic to the company logo.”

Claire stared at her.

Sophia continued.

“Something caused them to leave.”

“Maybe they found better jobs.”

“That doesn’t explain the complaints.”

“What complaints?”

Sophia hesitated.

“That’s the interesting part.”

Claire straightened.

“Sophia.”

“What?”

“Why do you sound excited?”

“I’m not excited.”

“You absolutely are.”

Sophia looked at the screen again.

“I’ve discovered something.”

“That’s worse.”

Sophia ignored her.

“Several complaints were submitted by employees shortly before they resigned.”

Claire frowned.

“And?”

“The complaints aren’t in the final reports.”

Silence.

Sophia smiled slowly.

“See?”

Claire stared at her.

“See what?”

“We have a mystery.”

“We have a workplace.”

“It’s basically the same thing.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Sophia clicked into another document.

“Look at this.”

Claire leaned over again.

Three complaints.

Three different employees.

Three different departments.

All removed from the final report.

Sophia tapped the screen.

“And this isn’t random.”

“How do you know?”

“Because whoever removed them was very consistent.”

Claire slowly closed the folder in her hands.

“You’re investigating this.”

Sophia looked offended.

“I’m reviewing documents.”

“You’re reviewing documents suspiciously.”

“That’s not a crime.”

“It might become one.”

Sophia turned back to her computer.

“I’ll be careful.”

Claire sighed.

“That’s exactly what people say immediately before doing something stupid.”

Sophia continued typing.

“I don’t do stupid things.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.

“You wore two different shoes to your interview.”

Sophia looked down at her feet.

“That was fashion.”

“One was black.”

“The other was navy.”

“Exactly.”

Sophia pointed at her screen.

“Focus.”

Claire shook her head and walked away.

Sophia waited until she was gone.

Then she opened another file.

Because, obviously, she had no intention of stopping.

⸻

Across the building, Adrian Vale stood in silence.

His phone had vibrated once.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the message.

Stop her.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Another message appeared.

The woman investigating the European turnover records is in danger if she continues.

His eyes narrowed.

Sophia.

He read the message again.

A third appeared.

She is looking in the wrong place.

Then—

But she is getting too close.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

He immediately called his security director.

“Trace the number.”

“We’re trying.”

“Try faster.”

The line went quiet.

Adrian looked toward the glass wall of his office.

Beyond it, the company continued as usual.

Employees walked through corridors.

Phones rang.

Meetings continued.

No one knew that someone had just threatened one of his employees.

And Sophia Bennett probably had no idea she was being watched.

That thought bothered him.

Not because of anything personal.

Because she was reckless.

She had been working at Vale Corporation for only a short time and had somehow managed to find information that several senior executives had apparently missed.

She asked questions without understanding which questions were dangerous.

She followed clues without considering who might have wanted them buried.

And worst of all—

she seemed completely incapable of leaving a mystery alone.

Adrian pressed the intercom.

“Send Sophia Bennett to my office.”

⸻

Sophia arrived seven minutes later.

She knocked once.

Then opened the door.

“Did you call me?”

Adrian looked up.

“Yes.”

Sophia stepped inside.

She immediately noticed his expression.

That was never a good sign.

“Is this about the turnover reports?”

Adrian stared at her.

She stopped.

“Okay.”

A pause.

“That’s a yes.”

“Close the door.”

She did.

Adrian gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

Sophia sat.

He remained standing.

“What have you found?”

She blinked.

“About what?”

“The European employee turnover.”

Sophia hesitated.

“Quite a lot.”

“I want all of it.”

Her eyebrows rose.

“All of it?”

“Every report.”

“Even the preliminary ones?”

“Yes.”

“The employee complaints?”

“Yes.”

“The names?”

“Yes.”

“The discrepancies?”

“Especially those.”

Sophia studied him.

“Did something happen?”

Adrian’s expression didn’t change.

“Why?”

“Because three hours ago you told me not to discuss these findings.”

“I changed my mind.”

Sophia narrowed her eyes.

“That’s suspicious.”

Adrian stared at her.

She immediately raised both hands.

“Sorry.”

A beat.

“But it is.”

“I know.”

That caught her off guard.

Adrian walked toward the window.

“Give me everything you found.”

Sophia opened her laptop.

“I found discrepancies between the official European turnover reports and the internal employee complaints.”

“Continue.”

“Several employees filed complaints shortly before resigning.”

“About what?”

“Management interference. Missing overtime payments. Changes in responsibilities. Pressure from senior staff. And two complaints mention altered inventory records.”

Adrian turned around.

“Inventory?”

Sophia nodded.

“That part doesn’t fit the turnover issue.”

“Why?”

“Because those employees weren’t working in inventory.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What else?”

Sophia hesitated.

“I found something else.”

“What?”

She opened another file.

“Several names appear in preliminary reports but disappear from the final versions.”

“Which names?”

She turned the laptop toward him.

Adrian walked closer.

His eyes moved down the list.

Then stopped.

Nathaniel Cross.

Sophia watched his face.

There.

That tiny change.

Barely visible.

But she noticed.

“You know him.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Where did you find that name?”

Sophia pointed at the screen.

“In the European operations files.”

“Who gave you access?”

“The system.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Sophia paused.

“Nobody.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“I found the files.”

“You were told not to investigate this.”

“I know.”

“Yet you did.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Sophia considered the question.

Then shrugged.

“Because something was wrong.”

Adrian stared at her.

She added quickly—

“And because once I noticed it, I couldn’t un-notice it.”

For the first time, something almost resembling amusement crossed his face.

Almost.

Sophia continued.

“It’s like seeing someone put a painting upside down. You can pretend you didn’t see it, but you’ll spend the rest of the day thinking about it.”

Adrian said nothing.

Sophia sighed.

“Fine. That sounded more intelligent in my head.”

He looked back at the screen.

“Did you find anything about Nathaniel Cross?”

“Only that his name was removed.”

“Nothing else?”

“There was a confidential review.”

Adrian’s attention sharpened.

“Where?”

“Restricted records.”

“How did you access them?”

Sophia smiled awkwardly.

“I didn’t.”

A pause.

“Someone sent them to me.”

Adrian’s expression went cold.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“When?”

“Two days ago.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Sophia looked genuinely confused.

“You told me not to investigate.”

“That doesn’t mean you keep receiving confidential documents without telling me.”

“I wasn’t exactly sure how to phrase it.”

Adrian stared at her.

Sophia attempted an imitation of herself.

“Hello, Mr. Vale. Someone I don’t know has anonymously sent me confidential corporate records. Anyway, would you like coffee?”

He didn’t smile.

She sighed.

“Right. Bad timing.”

Adrian walked back to his desk.

“Forward everything.”

“Everything?”

“Every file. Every message. Every photograph. Every document.”

Sophia nodded.

“Okay.”

She began gathering the information.

Then stopped.

“Mr. Vale?”

“What?”

“Am I in trouble?”

Adrian looked at her.

“No.”

“Am I fired?”

“No.”

“Am I supposed to stop investigating?”

He was silent for a moment.

“You’re supposed to stop investigating alone.”

Sophia nodded slowly.

“That sounds reasonable.”

“It is an order.”

“Less reasonable.”

His eyes narrowed.

Sophia immediately turned back to her laptop.

“Sending the files.”

A few seconds later, Adrian’s computer chimed.

The documents began appearing one after another.

Employee complaints.

Turnover reports.

Internal reviews.

Missing names.

Altered records.

Nathaniel Cross.

Adrian stared at the growing list.

Then his phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

He looked at the screen.

One sentence.

You should have stopped her sooner.

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

A second message appeared.

Now they know she’s looking.

He slowly lifted his gaze toward Sophia.

She was completely absorbed in her laptop.

Unaware.

Curious.

And, apparently, in far more danger than she realized.

Adrian tightened his grip around the phone.

This time, whatever was buried inside Vale Corporation wasn’t merely a secret.

Someone was willing to protect it.

And Sophia had just walked straight into the middle of it.

Sophia Bennett had discovered three things since joining Vale Corporation.First, billionaires apparently believed coffee was an acceptable substitute for lunch.Second, confidential documents had a strange habit of becoming more interesting the moment someone told her not to read them. And third—Adrian Vale was terrible at hiding when he was worried.Unfortunately for him, Sophia was excellent at noticing things people were trying not to show. She sat at her desk, staring at the European turnover reports spread across her computer screen.Something was wrong. Not slightly wrong. Not maybe-the-spreadsheet-formula-is-broken wrong.Something was deliberately wrong.Sophia leaned closer to the screen."Come on..."She compared the original employee records with the final reports again.Several complaints were missing.Entire sections had been removed. And the names that appeared in the preliminary documents seemed to vanish once the reports reached senior management. She clicked between
