Sophia Bennett had discovered three things since joining Vale Corporation.

First, billionaires apparently believed coffee was an acceptable substitute for lunch.

Second, confidential documents had a strange habit of becoming more interesting the moment someone told her not to read them.

And third—

Adrian Vale was terrible at hiding when he was worried.

Unfortunately for him, Sophia was excellent at noticing things people were trying not to show.

She sat at her desk, staring at the European turnover reports spread across her computer screen.

Something was wrong.

Not slightly wrong.

Not maybe-the-spreadsheet-formula-is-broken wrong.

Something was deliberately wrong.

Sophia leaned closer to the screen.

"Come on..."

She compared the original employee records with the final reports again.

Several complaints were missing.

Entire sections had been removed.

And the names that appeared in the preliminary documents seemed to vanish once the reports reached senior management.

She clicked between two files.

"Interesting."

Claire appeared beside her desk.

"That word usually means you're about to cause a problem."

Sophia looked up.

"I don't cause problems."

Claire stared at her.

Sophia sighed.

"Fine. I find problems."

"Same thing."

"I prefer professional curiosity."

"You prefer sticking your nose where it doesn't belong."

Sophia considered that.

"That sounds less professional."

Claire laughed.

Sophia returned to the screen.

"I think someone changed these reports."

Claire's smile disappeared.

"You said that yesterday."

"And I'm saying it again today because apparently nobody listened yesterday."

"Sophia."

"What?"

"You were specifically told not to investigate anything beyond the turnover figures."

"I am investigating the turnover figures."

Claire pointed at the files.

"Those aren't turnover figures anymore."

Sophia glanced at the growing stack of documents beside her.

"Technically, they're still related."

"How?"

"I haven't figured that part out yet."

Claire shook her head.

"You need a hobby."

"I have one."

"What?"

"Finding problems."

"That's not a hobby."

"It is if you're talented."

Claire laughed again before walking away.

Sophia smiled faintly.

Then her expression changed.

Her eyes landed on one particular name.

Nathaniel Cross.

Again.

Always appearing where he shouldn't.

She opened another file.

There he was.

Another report.

Nathaniel Cross.

Another internal review.

Nathaniel Cross.

September 14.

Sophia's fingers stopped above the keyboard.

September 14.

That date had appeared too many times to be a coincidence.

The photograph of Elena.

Nathaniel entering Vale Corporation.

The confidential Project Laurent file.

And now these altered employee records.

Sophia slowly leaned back.

"Okay..."

She looked around the office.

Nobody seemed to be watching her.

That probably meant she was definitely being watched.

She lowered her voice.

"What happened on September 14?"

Across the building, Adrian Vale stood in front of the windows of his office.

The city stretched beneath him.

Normally, the view calmed him.

Today, it didn't.

His phone sat on the desk behind him.

The anonymous message was still open.

STOP HER.

He had read it six times.

He hated the message.

Not because it was threatening.

Because it was vague.

And Adrian hated vague.

Another message had arrived moments later.

The woman investigating the European turnover records is in danger if she continues.

His jaw tightened.

Sophia.

He had known she was curious.

He had underestimated how far that curiosity would take her.

The final message had been worse.

She is looking in the wrong place.

Then—

But she is getting too close.

Adrian picked up the phone.

He stared at Sophia's name for several seconds.

Then pressed call.

Sophia's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

ADRIAN VALE.

She immediately sat straighter.

Claire looked over from across the room.

Sophia mouthed:

I'm in trouble.

Claire mouthed back:

Definitely.

Sophia answered.

"Mr. Vale?"

"Come to my office."

Sophia blinked.

"Now?"

"Now."

The call ended.

She stared at the phone.

"That sounded ominous."

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe you finally got caught."

"I haven't done anything."

Claire looked at the pile of confidential documents.

Sophia followed her gaze.

"...recently."

Five minutes later, Sophia stood outside Adrian's office.

She knocked.

"Come in."

She entered.

Adrian was standing behind his desk.

His expression was unreadable.

Sophia immediately became nervous.

Not because he was angry.

That would have been easier.

He looked concerned.

And Adrian Vale looking concerned was considerably more frightening.

"You wanted to see me?"

"Close the door."

Sophia did.

Adrian pointed toward the chair.

"Sit."

She sat.

He remained standing.

"What have you found?"

Sophia hesitated.

"About what?"

His eyes narrowed.

"You know exactly what I'm asking."

She looked down at her notebook.

"The European turnover issue?"

"Everything."

Sophia blinked.

"Everything?"

"Every discrepancy. Every altered report. Every employee complaint. Every name you've found."

She slowly opened her notebook.

"That's...quite a lot."

"I know."

She began explaining.

The missing complaints.

The altered figures.

The employees whose names disappeared from final reports.

The discrepancies between preliminary and official documents.

Adrian listened without interrupting.

Then Sophia reached the name that had been bothering her.

"Nathaniel Cross."

Adrian's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Sophia noticed.

She always noticed.

"You found his name again," Adrian said.

"Several times."

"Where?"

"European operations files."

"Which files?"

Sophia gave him the file numbers.

Adrian memorized them.

Then his eyes returned to her.

"Who gave you access to these?"

Sophia hesitated.

"Some of them were already available."

"And the others?"

She shifted in her chair.

"An anonymous source."

Adrian went completely still.

"What?"

"An anonymous source."

"How did they contact you?"

"Email."

"Show me."

Sophia reached for her phone.

Adrian came around the desk.

He stopped beside her.

Sophia unlocked the screen and handed him the phone.

Their hands almost touched.

It was nothing.

Barely a second.

But Adrian paused.

So did Sophia.

Then he took the phone.

Neither mentioned it.

He read the messages.

His expression hardened.

"You didn't tell me about this."

Sophia looked slightly guilty.

"I was going to."

"When?"

"Eventually."

"Eventually?"

"After I figured out what was happening."

Adrian gave her a look.

Sophia sighed.

"Okay. That sounded better in my head."

He handed the phone back.

"Don't respond to them."

"I haven't."

"Don't investigate Nathaniel Cross alone."

"I haven't."

Adrian looked at the files surrounding her.

Sophia followed his gaze.

"Okay."

"You've been investigating him."

"I've been investigating the documents."

"Sophia."

She sighed.

"Fine. Yes."

Adrian's expression became serious.

"Stop."

Sophia stared at him.

"Because I'm wrong?"

"Because I don't know who is sending you these documents."

That silenced her.

Adrian continued.

"Someone knows what you're looking for."

Sophia swallowed.

"And they know you're looking for it."

She looked down.

For once, she had no joke.

Adrian noticed.

His voice softened slightly.

"Be careful."

Sophia looked up.

"I am careful."

"No."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You don't sound convinced."

"I'm not."

For the first time, a tiny smile appeared on Sophia's face.

"You know, for someone who hired me because I notice things, you seem surprisingly annoyed when I notice things."

Adrian stared at her.

"I hired you to analyze employee turnover."

"I did."

"You were supposed to stop there."

Sophia glanced at the files.

"I tried."

"You clearly didn't try very hard."

"I tried for approximately twelve minutes."

Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Sophia noticed.

She smiled back before looking away.

Neither said anything.

Then Adrian's phone vibrated.

The moment disappeared.

He looked at the screen.

Another anonymous message.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED HER SOONER.

Adrian's expression hardened.

A second message appeared.

NOW THEY KNOW SHE'S LOOKING.

His eyes lifted toward Sophia.

She was still looking at the documents.

Completely unaware.

Adrian turned the phone face down.

"Sophia."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"From now on, you tell me everything."

She frowned.

"Everything?"

"Everything."

She nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Adrian walked back behind his desk.

Sophia gathered her papers.

She reached the door.

Then stopped.

She turned around.

"Mr. Vale?"

"What?"

"If someone is sending me these files..."

Adrian waited.

"Why me?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he had been asking himself the same question.

Someone wanted Sophia to find something.

Someone wanted Adrian to know that she had found it.

And someone was watching how close she came to the truth.

"I don't know," he finally said.

Sophia nodded.

"Right."

She opened the door.

Then paused again.

"And for the record..."

Adrian looked at her.

"I wasn't planning to stop investigating."

He stared.

Sophia gave him an innocent smile.

"I just thought you should know."

Then she walked out.

The door closed.

Adrian stared at it.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his phone vibrated again.

One final message appeared.

ASK SOPHIA WHAT SHE FOUND ON SEPTEMBER 14.

Adrian's blood ran cold.

He looked toward the closed door.

September 14.

The date he had been trying to understand for months.

The date connected to Elena.

Nathaniel Cross.

Project Laurent.

And now—

Sophia.

Someone wasn't simply giving Sophia clues.

They were leading her somewhere.

And Adrian suddenly wondered whether Sophia had ever truly been the one doing the investigating.

Or whether someone had been investigating her all along.

He picked up his phone.

His eyes narrowed.

For the first time since Elena had walked back into his life, Adrian felt something stronger than anger.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For the woman who had unknowingly stepped too close to a secret that had already destroyed everything once.

And somewhere in the city, someone already knew exactly how close she was.

Too close.

This keeps Sophia’s humor and curiosity prominent while making the September 14 mystery more dangerous and giving Adrian a small, restrained moment of warmth with her without turning her into his romantic interest.

  • The Sin Behind Our Vows   The Price of Goodbye

By morning, Adrian had become Adrian Vale again. At least, that was what everyone else saw.At 7:12 a.m., he entered Vale Corporation wearing a charcoal suit and an expression that discouraged conversation. At 7:18, he rejected a revised acquisition proposal. At 7:31, he approved the European expansion budget. At 7:46, he informed an executive that arriving unprepared to a meeting was not an acceptable personality trait. At 8:03, Claire placed coffee on his desk.At 8:04, she realized something was wrong. Not because Adrian looked upset. That would have been easier. He looked completely normal.Too normal."Morning," Claire said carefully."Morning."She placed a folder beside his keyboard."The Singapore projections.""Thank you."Claire remained there.Adrian looked up."Something else?"She studied him."No.""Then why are you s

  • The Sin Behind Our Vows   Bored of You

Adrian had imagined seeing Elena again a hundred different ways.In some versions, he ignored her.In others, he demanded answers.Sometimes he imagined looking at her and feeling absolutely nothing. That had been his favorite. The fantasy in which Elena Laurent Vale walked into a room and his heart no longer remembered her.Tonight proved how badly he had lied to himself. She was standing in front of him.And he still loved her.God, he hated her for that. Elena had arrived at Vale Corporation shortly after nine.No appointment. No warning.Just Elena.By then, most of the building had emptied. The executive floor was quiet, the lights dimmed beyond Adrian's office, the city glowing through walls of glass.Adrian had been alone when Claire called."Elena Vale is downstairs."His hand had tightened around his phone."Send her away."A pause."She says it's important.""I don't care.""Adrian—""Send her away."Another pause. Then Claire said quietly,"She's already in the elevator."

  • The Sin Behind Our Vows   One Question Too Many

Sophia Bennett had been given one very simple instruction.Stop investigating. It was clear.Reasonable.Easy to understand. She had even nodded when Adrian said it.Which was why, approximately forty-seven minutes later, she was sitting at her desk with six confidential reports open on her computer.Sophia stared at them."This is not investigating."Claire, standing beside her desk with a coffee in one hand, looked at the screen."What would you call it?""Reading.""You're comparing six reports.""Advanced reading.""You highlighted names.""Organized reading.""You created a spreadsheet."Sophia paused."Enthusiastic reading?"Claire stared at her.Sophia sighed."Fine."She minimized the spreadsheet.Claire raised an eyebrow."That doesn't make it disappear.""It makes me feel less guilty."Claire took a sip of coffee."You realize Adrian specifically told you to stop.""He told me not to investigate Nathaniel Cross.""And?""I'm not investigating Nathaniel Cross."Claire pointed

Sophia had never been good at leaving things alone. It was one of her worst qualities.Possibly her most useful one.She wasn’t sure.At the moment, however, she was beginning to suspect it might get her fired. She sat at her desk, staring at the files she had just sent Adrian.Employee complaints.Turnover reports.Altered records.Nathaniel Cross. And now—a warning. You should have stopped her sooner.Sophia read the message again. Then frowned.“Who is her?”Claire looked over from the other side of the desk.“You.”Sophia looked up.“I know that.”“Then why are you asking?”“I’m trying to understand why someone would threaten me.”Claire stared at her.“Because you’re investigating something you shouldn’t?”Sophia considered that.“That’s possible.”“That’s the answer.”“But it’s not a very satisfying answer.”Claire sighed.“You need a hobby.”“I have one.”“What?”“Finding problems.”“That’s not a hobby.”“It is if you’re talented.”Claire shook her head.Sophia looked back at

  • The Sin Behind Our Vows   The Warning

Sophia Bennett had a problem. She was curious. Not normally curious.Dangerously curious. The kind of curious that made her read an entire office disciplinary report because she wanted to know why someone’s name had been underlined three times. The kind that made her investigate things that had absolutely nothing to do with her.And apparently, working at Vale Corporation had given that particular flaw a very large playground.Sophia stared at the spreadsheet on her screen. Then at the report beside it.Then back at the spreadsheet.Something was wrong.Again.She clicked through another file.“No.”Another.“That can’t be right.”Another.“Definitely not right.”Claire appeared beside her desk carrying two folders.“What isn’t right?”Sophia pointed at the screen.“The numbers.”Claire looked at them.“They look like numbers.”“That’s not helpful.”“I wasn’t trying to be helpful.”Sophia sighed.“The European employee turnover figures don’t match the internal complaints.”Claire’s ex
