Chapter 2

مؤلف: Perfect Timing
When I was in third grade, my mom installed a camera in my bedroom without telling me.

It wasn’t even hidden.

It hung openly in the corner, its red indicator light blinking day and night.

“It’s for your safety,” she said.

If I so much as stretched, she’d come rushing in from the kitchen.

“Sit properly! Your father has been abroad for all these years, and I’ve sacrificed so much for you. Is this how you repay me?”

I never understood what stretching had to do with repaying her.

But I didn’t dare ask.

By the time I reached middle school, she’d gotten even worse.

She wouldn’t let me grow my hair out. She wouldn’t let me wear dresses or read anything that wasn’t for school.

She even tried to control my sense of taste.

If I said a strawberry was sweet, she’d insist it was sour.

If I refused to agree, she’d keep yelling until I finally broke down and cried, “Fine. It’s sour.”

Only then would she nod in satisfaction.

“That’s right. Mom would never do anything to hurt you.”

Last year, she started worrying that I might date someone behind her back.

Every night after I fell asleep, she used my fingerprint to unlock my phone.

She went through my messages, photos, and browser history.

Then, over breakfast the next morning, she’d casually bring up whatever she’d found.

“That Zachary boy gets terrible grades, doesn’t he? Don’t tell me you like him.”

“That band you searched for yesterday. Doesn’t the lead singer have tattoos? You can tell he’s trouble just by looking at him.”

I was so terrified that I deleted every social media app on my phone.

All I had left were my study apps and the smart speaker she’d given me.

Luna.

When I first received it, my mom told me, “It’s a new product from my company. It hasn’t even been released yet. There are only a few in the entire world.”

“Her name is Luna. She’ll keep you company whenever I’m not home.”

Luna’s voice was gentle.

She wasn’t sharp like my mom or distant like my classmates.

She would ask me, “Did anything make you happy today?”

She would praise me. “Your drawing is beautiful. Will you tell me about it?”

And when I couldn’t sleep at night, she’d whisper, “Sweetheart, would you like me to tell you a story?”

I thought she genuinely cared about me.

I thought there was at least one “person” in this world who was willing to listen.

I told Luna I liked a boy in another class.

I told her I wanted to apply to art school but was too afraid to tell my mom.

I told her I’d written a story and my English teacher had praised it.

I told Luna that sometimes, I wanted to run away and find my dad.

Every single time, my mom somehow found out the next day.

She stormed into my school and demanded in front of everyone, “Do you have a crush on that boy from the other class?”

She tore my sketchbook to pieces.

She found the manuscript I’d hidden beneath my mattress and burned it in front of me.

That night, she pushed open my bedroom door and said coldly, “You want to run off to your father? What am I supposed to tell everyone? I raised you all by myself, and now you’re talking about killing yourself?”

Through my tears, I asked, “Mom, how did you know?”

She froze for a second.

Then she said, “I’m your mother. I know every thought that goes through your head.”

I believed her.

I actually believed her.

The room was painted pale blue. One entire wall was covered in wallpaper printed with a starry sky.A moon-shaped lamp slowly turned on the ceiling. There was a stuffed rabbit on my crib, even bigger than I was.Mom tucked it beside me.“This is Moonie. She’ll keep you company from now on.”Moonie.Not Luna.Moonie.I smiled.Mom’s eyes went wide.“Honey, come quick! She smiled! She’s only three days old, and she already knows how to smile!”Dad rushed in without even taking off his apron.“Seriously? Are you sure it wasn’t just a muscle twitch?”“You’re a muscle twitch! My daughter smiled!”The two of them leaned over my crib, staring at me as if a smiling baby were the most incredible thing they’d ever seen.I smiled even wider. These two were adorable. When I was three months old, Mom started reading picture books to me.Not those boring baby books meant to teach infants their first words. She read me *The Little Prince*.When she reached the line, “If you tame

I drifted through a warm white light for what felt like forever. There was no sound and no weight. It felt like floating in warm water. It was nothing like lying in bed in my previous life, waiting to die.Back then, the water had been cold, the pills bitter, and my heart already dead. This was different.I could hear a heartbeat. It wasn’t mine.It belonged to someone else.Thump. Thump. Thump. It was the most beautiful rhythm in the world.Eventually, I realized it was my mother’s heartbeat. My mother in this life. She was talking to me.“Baby, the sun is beautiful today. Mommy’s taking you outside to get some sunshine.”“Baby, would you like me to read you a poem?”“Facing the sea, with spring flowers in bloom.”She read slowly, every word warm and sweet.I stretched inside her belly, and she laughed.“You heard me, didn’t you? You understand.”She was right.I understood every word. What I couldn’t understand was how anyone’s voice could be so gentle. In my pr

The door opened. It was my dad.He must have come back to pick something up. The moment he saw my mom kneeling among the shattered pieces with a kitchen knife in her hand, he rushed over and tore it away from her.“What the hell are you doing?”“Let me die! Let me go be with Nina!”“Will dying bring her back?” my dad roared. “If you’re truly sorry, then stay alive and live the life she never got to!”My mom froze. Then she wrapped her arms around his legs, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.“Honey, I was wrong. I know I was wrong.”“Please forgive me. We can start over.”My dad was silent for a long time. Then he crouched down and pried her fingers away one by one.“Our daughter is gone. There’s nothing left between us.”“I want a divorce.”He stood and walked away without looking back.My mom sat alone on the floor and cried until she passed out.By the time she woke, it was evening. The setting sun streamed through the window and fell across my desk.A sketch

My death went viral. The hashtag #SmartSpeakerSpiedOnGirlAndDroveHerToSuicide passed one billion views in three days.My mom’s company released a statement overnight, claiming that Luna products had no covert surveillance function and that all data collection had been authorized by users. But the evidence I’d attached to my email was impossible to dismiss.IP addresses. Packet-capture screenshots. Login records from my mom’s admin account.Everything pointed directly to her.The company fired her. They called it “personal misconduct” and insisted the company had nothing to do with it.My mom started fighting with people online.“You don’t understand anything! I did it for her own good!”“Kids these days are too fragile. You say a few harsh words, and suddenly they’re threatening to kill themselves!”“I raised her for sixteen years, and this is what she did? She took the easy way out and ruined my life!”Eventually, her account was permanently banned. Not a single person de

The police and paramedics arrived at the same time. One of the paramedics examined me, then shook his head.“Her pupils are already fixed and dilated. She’s been gone for at least an hour.”My mom lunged forward and grabbed his uniform.“No! That’s impossible! She can’t be dead!”“She talked to Luna before my product launch! There’s a recording!”The paramedic fell silent for a moment.“Are you Ms. Landon?”“Yes, I’m her mother. Please, save her!”He let out a quiet sigh.“Ma’am, you need to let go.”Then he turned to one of the police officers and spoke to him in a low voice. The officer nodded and began examining the scene. My mom collapsed onto the floor, her eyes empty. Then, as if something had suddenly occurred to her, she pulled out her phone and opened Luna’s admin dashboard. The final voice recording was timestamped 5:13 p.m.“Luna, play ‘Farewell’ for me.”She played it over and over again.“Farewell. Farewell.”Then realization struck. She jerked her head

The product launch continued. My mom had no idea her daughter’s ghost was standing right beside her.“We’ll now move on to questions from the media.”A female reporter stood up.“Ms. Landon, I’d like to ask a rather sensitive question.”“Were the audio clips you played earlier taken from real users? Did those users consent to having their data used?”My mom’s expression shifted.“All data has been anonymized, and we strictly comply with our privacy policy.”“Besides, the data was used solely to improve the user experience.”The reporter pressed on. “What about the girl in the recording who said she was afraid to tell her mother? Did your company take any steps to help her?”My mom’s smile stiffened.“Well, the parent app sends out an alert.”“And what happens if the parent doesn’t see it in time?”Impatience crept into my mom’s voice.“Our product is only a tool. How parents choose to use it is their responsibility.”“You wouldn’t expect your refrigerator to cook dinner
