Chapter 3

Author: Genius Dragon
"Mrs. Murdock, since you've seen the photo, I think we know there's no misunderstanding.

"You've seen how I treated Zachary all these years. I've never wronged him. I loved him, but that didn't give him any right to hurt me as he wished," I said.

She was still his mother, after all. I couldn't be too harsh. "I'll get ready and be there soon."

After ending the call, I put on some makeup, grabbed my car keys, and headed out.

When I pulled up at the Murdock villa, Zachary's parents were already waiting outside. Zachary stood behind them, hanging his head low.

I got out of the car and had just shut the door when a black sports car sped toward me from the side.

"Lindsey, watch out!" Zachary lunged out and pushed me out of the way. I landed on the floor with a thump and saw how Zachary was sent flying as the car hit him.

The car sped away and disappeared. Zachary was rushed to the hospital.

He pushed me out of the way just in time, only to get his leg run over and end up fracturing his leg. Luckily, it wasn't critical.

I watched him lie there with a calm expression.

If this had happened before yesterday, I would've felt so guilty after seeing how badly injured he was because of me. I would've burst into tears on his shoulders and blamed myself for not being able to suffer in place of him.

But now, I was just grateful that he had shoved me away, allowing me to walk away with just minor scratches.

Zachary was just out of surgery. He looked weak, his face as pale as a sheet. His eyes lit up slightly when he saw me, and he said feebly, "Lindsey, thank god you're okay."

"Zachary Murdock, what day was it yesterday?" I asked sharply.

Zachary sounded annoyed as he replied, "Lindsey, I'm stuck in bed and injured because of you. Can't you see that?

"If it weren't for me, you would be lying on this bed now. But now you're whining about your damn birthday. How could you be so cold-hearted and selfish?"

Susan blamed me, too. "Exactly, Lindsey. Zachary has saved your life and is injured because of you. He's also your fiancé. How could you talk to him like that?"

"Oh, so you knew I was your future daughter-in-law. I thought you already had someone else in mind," I retorted before turning back to Zachary, who was lying on the bed. "Answer me. What day was yesterday?"

Zachary deflated like a balloon. "It was your birthday. Are you happy now?

"Lindsey, all I did was miss out on your birthday. Was that such a big deal? We'll spend your birthday together next year. I promise, alright?"

Amused, I asked him, "So, where were you last year? What about the year before last year and also the year before that? What were you doing on my birthdays for the past three years?"

"Uh…" Zachary hesitated.

Seeing that he had fallen silent, I reminded him, "Last year, Bianca said she wanted to see the sunset. You went hiking with her the whole day and left me alone in the restaurant.

"The year before that, you promised to spend my birthday with me. I had already prepared the yacht, but you had gone to help Bianca move. You had even driven off my car, leaving me at the jetty all by myself."

"Zachary, do you really think I'll take marrying you as a blessing? What? Are you a royalty now?" I narrowed my eyes. "Take a good look at yourself. Do you honestly think I can't survive without you?"I pointed down the steps. "Your legs are broken, not paralyzed. Just crawl up here."I looked him straight in the eyes. "Crawl like a pathetic dog. As long as you crawl up here, we'll cooperate. If not…"I gestured to the gate before continuing, "Get out of my way and go back to wherever the hell you came from!"That night, Zachary really crawled his way up my door. He had thought I was bluffing in the morning and rolled away in his wheelchair after throwing a few threats. He had thought he still had a chance, but he had been wrong. I had given up on him entirely. When he got home, he nearly got beaten to death by his father. If it hadn't been for his mother throwing herself between them, the old man might have actually done it.Daniel had even smashed the wheelchair into pieces. "

Back when I first got together with Zachary, they had practically lost their minds when they saw me feeding Ford Group's resources to the Murdock family. They had followed Zachary around like dogs sniffing for scraps. They were his loyal followers, and the crumbs I had tossed them were barely a drop in the ocean for the Ford family. Just so few, and they would act like I saved their lives. But when Bianca had returned, Zachary's attention had gone back to her. His three followers had followed right after him, thinking that it was only right for the Ford family to support them. Not only did they trash-talk me behind my back, they did it to my face, too. They had been drunk on the fantasy that I would never stop loving Zachary. Now that the dream had ended, they were too scared to accept the reality.A dream was a dream after all. They just woke up too late."I won't ruin you completely for the sake of all those years with Zachary, and because you're his loyal dogs. If I destroy you

"I can't afford to pay that price. Now that you've pissed off your girlfriend, your family's shell company is doomed anyway. I might as well squeeze out what's left of you to appease Lindsey. At least my family will survive after this," Zachary said coldly on the phone."And all I did was say a few nasty things about Lindsey. I never asked you to run her over with your car. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself."Liam hurled his phone at the wall and shattered it. All that brotherhood talk was bullshit. The first thing they did was to toss him out.Liam knew it was over. Not just him, but for the whole York family too.Whether it was pissing off his girlfriend, going against my family, or even getting betrayed by his friends, any of these were fatal. There was no other way out.On the other side, Sam wasn't doing much better either. He had punched his own girlfriend in the face. Sam knew he had screwed up. With a loud thud, he dropped to his knees. "Babe, are you okay? I didn't mean to! I wasn't paying attention. I'll take you to get patched up now, okay?"He looked like he was on the verge of collapsing. Just as he reached out to help his girlfriend, someone grabbed his arm.He turned and saw Bianca, tears streaming down her face. "Sam," she whimpered. "It hurts…"Her soft voice melted Sam's heart. Even I, as a woman, felt a shiver crawl up my spine, let alone Sam.In a heartbeat, he forgot about the girlfriend he had just punched in the face. He shot to his feet and reached out to guide Bianca back into the hospital. His girlfriend was done with him. With blood still pouring from her nose, she stepped in front of the hospital doors and blocked them.
