Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Ginger King
I pressed my hand to my forehead. My body trembled slightly, and I forced a weak smile. "I'm fine, just a little dizzy."

"You shouldn't have brought those things out to upset him!" Edmund immediately scolded Samantha, looking at me with concern. "Norman is only just starting to feel better, and you're making him feel worse!"

"Dad, I'm fine," I quickly reassured him.

The sharp scrutiny in Samantha's eyes softened, replaced by worry and guilt. "I'm sorry, Norman. I was too impatient," she said.

The topic dropped for the moment, and I half-listened as they chatted about everyday things.

After a while, Samantha suddenly slapped her thigh and turned to me. "Speaking of food, I just realized I never picked up those oysters and clams you like for your recovery!"

She glanced at her phone, checking the time. "There are still a couple of hours until lunch. Shawn, come with me to the market."

"These won't last if we go too late," she added.

The two of them stood and headed for the entryway. Edmund followed, not forgetting to remind them, "Pick up some fresh spinach and chicken, too. I'll make something nourishing for Norman."

I felt a tug at my heart and stood to head to the kitchen to help Edmund prepare. "Dad, let me give you a hand."

Gerald chimed in, "I can't just stand here doing nothing. I'll help, too."

As I made my way to the kitchen, Edmund quickly intervened. "You've only just started feeling better. Don't overdo it. Let Gerald take care of it. He could use the exercise."

I had no choice but to step back. Meanwhile, Samantha and Shawn had already finished gathering what they needed and stepped out the door.

As the door swung half-shut, I caught a glimpse of Samantha, wearing a tense expression as she leaned close to whisper something to Shawn. Something felt off.

I called out toward the kitchen. "Dad, I'm dizzy. I'll lie down for a bit. Call me when it's almost time for dinner."

After Edmund acknowledged me, I quietly closed the bedroom door, making it seem as if I had gone inside. Then, I carefully avoided the two in the kitchen and slipped out.

As I turned the corner on the first floor, I overheard Shawn mutter, "At this time, it won't be fresh anymore…"

"Don't worry. I reserved it in advance," Samantha replied.

Their conversation sounded ordinary, but my gut told me something was wrong.

"Let's hurry. We don't want to lose the stock," Shawn said.

As they disappeared down the hall, I came out from behind the wall. Maybe I was overthinking it.

Then, a memory of Maya, the recycler, flashed through my mind. Last time, she had tried to say something but stopped, and Samantha and Edmund had been extremely wary of her. Perhaps she knew something.

Following that thought, I made my way to the scrap collection station where Maya lived.

I called out a few times at the door with no answer, then steeled myself and pushed open the old wooden door. The room was tiny, stacked with jars and bottles.

Maya wasn't there. I searched around, and as I turned to leave, I noticed a small streak of blood on the wall behind the door. It was half-dried, not very old.

A chill shot from my feet to the top of my head. Had something happened to Maya?

I flung the door open, ready to run, but a shadowy figure stood just outside.

Suddenly, memories of the car accident flashed through my mind. I saw myself lying on the ground, bloodied, as a woman stepped down from the car that hit me.

As she drew closer, her face gradually came into focus.

Maya's expression darkened when she heard my words. "Norman, your amnesia wasn't actually caused by the car accident."When she noticed the confusion on my face, she patiently explained the truth. An absurd and horrifying story unfolded before my eyes. I had met Samantha through an arranged introduction. She fell in love with me instantly, and I was captivated by her tenderness. We married in haste, with no wedding ceremony or celebration. Just like that, I became the Ross family's live-in son-in-law. A month later, she became pregnant. After giving birth to a son, I returned to work as soon as the baby was a month old, earning money to provide for him. That day, I returned home from work to a house shrouded in silence. When I pushed open the bedroom door, I saw Samantha curled up in Shawn's arms. They were fast asleep, and when I startled them awake, panic flickered across their faces. It was only then that I noticed the baby was gone. I searched the house frantically and finally

I turned around and saw Maya sitting beside my bed, but she was no longer wearing that tattered T-shirt. Instead, she was in a crisp, well-fitted police uniform. The insignia on her shoulders gleamed in the sunlight, lending her an air of authority and integrity."Officer Faraday?" I asked tentatively. She smiled gently at me. "Just call me Maya. How are you feeling?""I'm fine," I said, pushing myself upright, though my mind was still a little foggy. "What about Samantha and the others?""They, along with David and his entire human organ trafficking syndicate, have all been taken down. Interrogations are underway now," Maya explained as she poured me a glass of warm water and recounted the full story."The organ trafficking ring operating in the country was extremely cunning. The mastermind was the very doctor who was supposed to operate on you. We had been tracking him in secret for a long time. "To gather evidence, I went undercover as an elderly scrap collector. By chance, w

The car sped through the streets and finally pulled into the underground parking garage of Dormington Hospital. We didn't enter through the main entrance. Instead, we went straight through a side staff passage, where a woman in a nurse's uniform was already waiting. With a blank expression, she ushered us into a private elevator that rose silently to the third floor. The long corridor was empty and so silent I could hear my own heartbeat. Shawn and I were ushered into a preparation room, with two burly male nurses flanking me to prevent any chance of resistance. Before we entered, Samantha and the others completely ignored me, directing all their care and concern toward Shawn. "Shawn, don't be afraid. After today, you will finally get better."Samantha cupped Shawn's face and kissed his forehead. The sincerity and worry in her eyes were a stark contrast to how she had ever looked at me.It seemed the outcome was taken for granted. When Shawn saw that I remained indifferent, his us

I gripped the back of the front seat tightly and looked up. A battered blue three-wheeled cart had crashed crookedly into the left front of our car, and the rider was Maya. She had fallen to the ground along with the cart, and bottles and jars from the vehicle lay shattered everywhere."Damn it! Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Gerald cursed as he yanked off his seatbelt and shoved the door open.Maya lay on the ground clutching her leg, and her face was contorted in pain. My heart shot into my throat."Do you even know how to ride that thing, you old fool? Are you blind?" Gerald rushed up to her and pointed at her face as he shouted, "Do you know how much this car costs? You couldn't afford to pay for it even if you sold yourself!"Maya trembled as she tried to get up, apologizing over and over. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry… The brakes failed…"Inside the car, Samantha frowned impatiently. "Of all days, it had to be today. So annoying."As Gerald and Maya continued arguing

The next day, the other four accompanied me with obvious reluctance to the junkyard where Maya lived.Samantha and Gerald flanked me on either side, while Edmund and Shawn followed close behind. It looked less like a visit and more like a tightly controlled escort. Disgust was written plainly across their faces. Shawn even covered his nose and mouth with a handkerchief, as if the air itself were toxic. When we arrived, Maya was sitting on a small stool by the entrance, sorting through a stack of old newspapers. The wound on her head had already scabbed over, covered by only a small piece of gauze. She looked much more alert, though her complexion remained pale. When she saw so many of us at once, a flicker of surprise passed through her clouded eyes. "Oh, my, Ms. Ross! What brings you here?"I shook off Samantha's grip and rushed forward, grabbing Maya's hands urgently. The calluses along the base of her thumb and the inside of her palm only strengthened certain suspicions in my mi

After that day, Shawn and Gerald took up residence, claiming they wanted to stay and keep me company for my mental health.During the day, Edmund and Shawn followed me everywhere, leaving me no space for even a moment of solitude. I wasn't even allowed to go downstairs for some air. Surprisingly, I didn't feel any resentment. I passed the time watching television, particularly the current affairs programs, which had become the only thing I genuinely enjoyed lately. For once, Samantha chose to sleep in the guest room, claiming she was too tired to disturb me. It was typical of a caring partner. She couldn't stand leaving the other alone in an empty room. It worked in my favor, as I had long felt uneasy sharing a bed with her.The windows in my room had been nailed shut, so they had no fear of me running away. Gerald often claimed he liked staying up late, playing on his phone in the living room, but I knew better. He was watching every exit in the house.I continued to play the pa
