Chapter 6

Author: Anna Smith
Vivienne opened the company system to restore my access to Harbor Point.

A notice appeared on the screen.

[EMPLOYEE ACCOUNT INACTIVE.]

She immediately called Human Resources.

They told her that my resignation had taken effect and all my company access had been terminated.

The conference room fell silent.

Sebastian called me three times. I did not answer.

On the fourth call, I sent him a message.

[Harbor Point is no longer my responsibility.]

He called again immediately.

“Father is willing to renegotiate your rights under the family trust. You only have to come back and take over the remediation.”

“The bank wants the project lead to explain why construction began despite the known risks.”

He was silent for a moment.

“I just joined the board. I can’t have a compliance failure attached to my name immediately.”

“So now you’re finally willing to acknowledge that I’m a Whitmore.”

“Callum, we’re family.”

“Only when you need me to take the consequences for you.”

I ended the call.

That evening, my father sent me an ultimatum.

[Be at Whitmore House tomorrow at nine. You will take over Harbor Point.]

[If you refuse, I will permanently withdraw the proposal to restore your rights under the family trust.]

Vivienne messaged me next.

[Don’t force Father to do this. You spent twenty-five years alone. You should understand what it means to finally have your family back.]

They believed I could never give up the Whitmore name or the family I had only just found.

They thought that if they threatened to take back everything they had promised me, I would give in as I always had.

At nine the next morning, my father and the family attorney waited for me in the study at Whitmore House.

At nine ten, my father pushed the unfinished trust amendment toward the attorney.

“Withdraw the proposal to restore Callum as a principal beneficiary. Inform the other trustees that I no longer support reinstating his voting rights.”

My mother went pale.

“Shouldn’t we give him another day?”

My father laughed coldly.

“He spent twenty-five years wanting to belong to this family. Once he understands what he’s about to lose, he’ll come back.”

Vivienne kept watching the study door.

Finally, she stood.

“I’ll get him.”

She hurried upstairs.

Less than a minute later, rapid footsteps sounded in the hall.

Vivienne returned to the study, her face drained of color. She held the dark green box Celia had given me. The seal was still intact.

“Dad, he isn’t here.”

My father frowned.

“Then call him.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Vivienne’s voice began to shake.

“His luggage, identification, and computer are gone. The guest suite is empty.”

Her phone buzzed.

Vale Risk Advisory had released an announcement.

[We are pleased to welcome Callum Whitmore back to Vale Risk Advisory as our newest partner.]

Below it was a photograph of Marcus and me signing the partnership agreement.

They had always believed that leaving the Whitmores would leave me with nothing.

But in that photograph, I had already found a place that was truly mine.

Three months later, after a valid environmental permit was issued, work resumed at Harbor Point. All noncompliant fire-protection materials had been rejected, the affected construction packages were rebid under independent supervision, and the lenders approved a revised schedule.Whitmore Holdings sold two noncore properties to cover part of the loss.Sterling resigned as chairman before the board could make his suspension permanent.Vivienne left the general counsel’s office and accepted the professional sanctions that followed the filing investigation. She did not challenge them.Sebastian cooperated with the review, returned the compensation tied to his brief board appointment, and went back to project work without an executive title.Celia and I formally ended the Ashbourne engagement. No announcement was made beyond a short statement from both families. For once, no one tried to turn a private failure into a society event.Vale Risk Advisory came out of Harbor Point with more work

The Whitmore trustees met again two weeks later. Not at the company. At Whitmore House.Graham Bell had arranged the meeting in the library where my father had once threatened to withdraw support for restoring my place in the family trust. This time, the amendment was already drafted. My name would be restored as a principal beneficiary. The voting structure would be revised so that neither Sebastian nor I held automatic control over Whitmore Holdings. Future corporate positions would require board approval rather than family designation. It was close to what had been promised when they first found me.Only a year late.Sebastian was standing near the windows when I arrived. He was no longer wearing the Whitmore director pin.A key rested on the table in front of him.“The east wing is empty,” he said.I looked at the key.“You moved?”“To the west guest rooms.”My mother immediately looked uncomfortable.“They’re smaller, and the heating is unreliable. We’re having someone look at it.

Charles Whitmore was removed from the foundation board that afternoon.By evening, investigators had frozen accounts connected to the Harbor Point contractor and requested records from three affiliated companies. The payment trail was worse than anyone expected.Nearly a third of the money allocated for specified fire-protection and structural materials had been routed through subcontractors linked to Charles before reaching private accounts.Sterling sat at the head of the emergency board table, staring at the figures.“I didn’t know.”Sebastian looked at him.“You chose Charles’s company.”“He’d worked with us for twenty years.”“You told me not to embarrass him over procurement questions.”Sterling’s expression sharpened.“I told you to manage a relationship. I did not tell you to ignore false records.”Sebastian’s jaw tightened.“I raised the cost discrepancy six months ago.”Vivienne stopped writing. My father turned toward him.“And I told you Callum’s risk team would deal with i

Sebastian was suspended from the board the next morning.Vivienne was placed on leave from her general counsel duties while the audit committee reviewed the Harbor Point filings. My mother sent messages throughout the day.My father had barely slept.Sebastian had not eaten breakfast.Whitmore House was full of lawyers. She never asked how I was doing.By noon, I blocked her number. On the third day of Vale’s review, the chief executive of Harbor Point’s general contractor arrived at my office without an appointment. He was in his sixties, silver-haired, wearing the discreet kind of suit that suggested he had spent decades around private clubs and municipal boards. He placed a slim leather envelope on the conference table.“Mr. Whitmore, projects this size are never perfectly clean.”I did not touch it.He opened the envelope.Inside was a cashier’s check.“There were substitutions. Some paperwork moved faster than it should have. No one was hurt.”“How much?”He seemed relieved.“Two

My father came to Vale Risk Advisory the next morning. He brought my mother and Vivienne with him.The receptionist stopped them in the lobby.“Do you have an appointment with Mr. Whitmore?”Sterling’s expression hardened.“I’m his father.”She glanced at the schedule.“I still need an appointment.”I found them there ten minutes later. My father had spent most of his life walking into rooms that opened before he reached the door. Standing behind a reception desk while a junior assistant asked him to wait did not suit him.“Find somewhere private,” he said.“We can use the conference room.”Marcus was already inside when we entered.Sterling set a folder on the table.“The trust issue can be resolved.”I did not reach for it.He continued.“I’ll support restoring you as a principal beneficiary. The voting-rights amendment goes back to the trustees this week. The east wing at Whitmore House is yours if you still want it.”My mother added, “Sebastian will need time to move. His back—”I

Eleanor went pale. The house manager lowered his eyes.“Mr. Callum left yesterday morning.”Eleanor went pale.“Yesterday?”The house manager glanced at Sterling before answering.“You instructed us not to interfere if he chose to leave.”The house manager looked toward Sterling before answering.“Mr. Whitmore instructed us not to interfere if Callum chose to leave.”My father’s expression changed.“That was said in anger.”Vivienne was still holding the unopened cuff-link box. She looked at Sebastian.“He turned in his badge. HR finalized the resignation. This wasn’t a night away.”Sebastian rubbed a hand over his face.“He may still come back once Harbor Point settles.”Vivienne did not answer. At ten that morning, Whitmore Holdings circulated an internal notice. It stated that Harbor Point’s prelaunch compliance review had been assigned to me and that my departure had left the project without adequate risk supervision. The wording was careful. It did not accuse me of fraud. It simpl
