Chapter 3

Author: Hungry Yara
Kevin hated cilantro. He also had a habit of doing things in a very particular way, so he always had to line up the cilantro neatly.

He did it so naturally that I could hardly believe my eyes.

I stared at him, trying to find even the smallest clue that he was pretending.

But there was nothing.

The way he held his utensils and even the way he blew on his food were exactly the same as my dead son, Kevin.

"Dad, why aren't you eating?" he suddenly asked.

I swallowed hard before answering, "I'm not hungry."

"Dad, where's Mom? Why didn't she come to pick me up?" He asked the question in such an innocent voice while eating his taco.

My heart sank when he mentioned Mandy.

After Kevin died, Mandy blamed me for not taking good care of our son. She divorced me, and we had lost contact a long time ago.

"She moved overseas."

After he finished his tacos, I took him back to Harmony Heights.

It was an old apartment complex. The motion-activated lights in the hallway were broken, so they kept flickering on and off.

When I reached Apartment 402, I pulled out my keys.

Before I could even put the key into the lock, the boy suddenly asked, "Dad, is the lock acting up again? You have to lift the handle."

My hand shook. The key slipped from my fingers and hit the floor.

The lock really was broken. I had to lift the handle to open the door. But that problem had only started six months ago.

Three years ago, when Kevin died, the lock had worked perfectly.

So how did this boy know?

I spun around and slammed him against the wall.

My eyes were red as I demanded, "Who are you? Who told you all this? Who sent you here?"

The boy's eyes filled with tears as he trembled in fear. "Dad, what's wrong? I'm Kevin. Look..."

He reached into his pocket and pulled something out. Then he held it out to me.

It was a rusty piece of metal that had been filed into a crooked five-pointed star.

"This is the dart you made for me. I was afraid Mom would throw it away, so I hid it in a crack under the floor beneath my bed..."

I completely broke down when I heard those words.

I had secretly made that dart for Kevin myself, and he really had hidden it under his bed.

After Kevin died, I could never bring myself to touch his room. I had never even cleaned under his bed.

My hands were shaking as I unlocked the door. I rushed into the spare bedroom and dropped to the floor. I used my phone to shine a light under the bed.

There was nothing in the crack.

But the shape of the crack matched the metal dart perfectly.

I sat on the floor and stared at the boy standing in the doorway.

He stared back at me. For a moment, it looked like he was smiling. But then his face quickly changed back to that same hurt expression.

"Dad, I'm tired." As he spoke, he casually took off his shoes and placed them on the bottom shelf of the shoe rack.

Then he walked straight into the spare bedroom and climbed into the small bed that had been empty for three years.

I stood in the living room. As I listened to his steady breathing from the bedroom, the whole apartment felt suffocating.

That night, I sat on the couch with a kitchen knife in my hand. I didn't dare let my guard down for even a second.

At exactly three in the morning, a steady dripping sound came from the spare bedroom.

It sounded like water dripping from completely soaked clothes.

I tightened my grip on the knife and held my breath. Then I quietly walked to the bedroom door.

The door was slightly open.

Through the moonlight, I saw the boy standing beside the bed with his back to me.

He was completely soaked. Water dripped from his clothes and spread across the floor.

A dark puddle slowly formed beneath his feet.

He lowered his head and muttered something.

I moved a little closer.

Finally, I heard what he was saying. "Bad Daddy... He won't pay. He deserves to die..."

I was frozen with fear.

The knife in my hand struck the doorframe with a loud clang.

The boy suddenly turned around.

His face was deathly pale. His eyes had rolled so far back that I could only see the whites. There were no pupils in sight.

I closed my eyes in despair.I couldn't accept this. When Flint reached Bill, he handed him the phone. But it wasn't Kevin's phone. Bill screamed and fell to the ground, clutching his eye.The shotgun went off at the same time, blasting a hole in the ceiling."Dad, run!" Flint shouted before quickly slipping into a pile of abandoned machinery nearby. So, he had been pretending to betray me.He had risked his life to create an opening for me.I was deeply moved, and I didn't want to run anymore.I picked up the metal pipe and charged straight into the crowd. "I'm coming for you!"The dozen or so thugs were caught completely off guard. Bill was badly injured, and they had no idea what

Kevin used to tell me that he had hidden a "treasure" inside the exhaust vent in Workshop No. 2.I always thought he meant marbles or trading cards.Could it be...I struggled to my feet. "Let's go to the exhaust vent!"Flint and I helped each other walk over to the vent in the corner. The screws were completely rusted shut, so I used the metal pipe to pry the grate open.I reached inside and felt around. There was nothing but dust and rat droppings.Just as I was about to give up, my fingers touched something hard.It was a small box wrapped in several layers of plastic. My hands trembled as I opened it.Inside was an old cellphone. It was Kevin's phone. After the accident, the police had only found his clothes. His phone had never been recovered.I held down the power button, but the phone wouldn't turn on.The battery was dead.Flint pulled a tiny power bank from his pocket. "I have a power bank! I had worked security for years, but I was getting older. My ankle was also injured, so I quickly found myself at a disadvantage. The thug kicked me hard in the stomach. I dropped to my knees in pain."Kill him now!" Bill shouted. The thug raised his metal pipe and prepared to smash my head.At that critical moment, the bound boy suddenly moved.Somehow, he had already worked the ropes loose. Instead of running, he charged at the thug and drove the knife deep into his thigh.Squish!Blood sprayed everywhere. The thug screamed and collapsed.I took the chance to grab the metal pipe and swung it with all my strength. It struck the thug's head, knocking him unconscious. The situation had completely changed.Bill clutched his bleeding wrist and stared at the blood-covered boy in horror. "Damn! You little brat..."The boy stood in front of me, holding the bloody knife.

The moment the car door closed, the boy secretly dropped his game console onto the ground.I waited until the car was gone before running over to pick it up.It was an old handheld game console. There was no game cartridge inside. But when I opened the battery compartment, I found a crumpled piece of paper hidden inside.I unfolded it.There was a crooked line of handwriting. "Help me. They're going to kill me tonight at 10 p.m. at an abandoned textile mill in Westfield."The abandoned textile mill in Westfield was Kevin's favorite place to explore.I couldn't tell if this boy was putting on another act or if he was really asking me for help.If it was a trap, going there would mean walking straight into it.But if it was real...I remembered the desperate look in his eyes when he glanced at me before getting into the car. There had also been a tiny bit of hope in that look.It was exactly the same look Kevin used to give me whenever he begged me to buy him a new toy.I decided to go.

After saying that, he walked away.I watched him disappear and finally stopped shouting. My anger had reached its limit. Instead, it turned into a terrifying desire to kill. But I couldn't lose my mind.I couldn't go to prison either.I had to get out so I could avenge Kevin.I looked up at the small window high on the wall of the holding cell. My eyes slowly turned cold and fierce.I worked security for a living, so I knew how to escape. Two in the morning was the quietest time in the station.I took off my jacket and tore the shirt underneath into strips. Then I tied the strips together to make a rope. This was only a temporary holding cell, so security wasn't very tight.Earlier, when I had slammed into the bars, I noticed that one of them was loose.I grabbed the rusty bar and pulled with all my strength. It bent. The rust tore open my palm, and blood began pouring out. I didn't even feel the pain.I climbed up like a lizard and squeezed through the small window. But when I landed

I screamed from inside the interrogation room, "Officer, that kid started the fire himself! He's framing me! He's pretending to be my son!"The officer threw a report onto the table. "The DNA results aren't ready yet. But we found plenty of your fingerprints in your apartment. And we found this."He pulled out a photo. It showed the smashed camera."Your fingerprints are the only ones on it. Your neighbors also said they heard screaming from your apartment last night. Justin, are you under so much pressure from your debts that you've developed a mental disorder?"A mental disorder?Did they want to send me to a mental hospital? Then I suddenly understood. If they could make everyone believe I was mentally ill, my legal guardian—my ex-wife, Mandy—could take control of my property and sell my apartment. Her plan was beyond cruel.I forced myself to calm down.
