Chapter 5

Author: Hungry Yara
I spun around and saw that the living room was empty.

The boy was in the spare bedroom doing his homework.

I immediately dragged a ladder over to the corner where the photo had been taken.

That's when I spotted a tiny pinhole camera hidden inside the air vent.

A red light was blinking. It was still recording.

I was shocked.

Who else had been inside my apartment besides that boy?

Had the camera been installed long ago?

I ripped it out of the vent and smashed it against the floor. Then I stomped o

  • The Son Who Came Back   Chapter 11

I closed my eyes in despair.I couldn't accept this. When Flint reached Bill, he handed him the phone. But it wasn't Kevin's phone. It was the old phone I had secretly slipped into Flint's hand earlier."The password is..." Flint leaned closer to Bill and whispered. The moment Bill lowered his head to listen, Flint suddenly slipped something from his sleeve.Thud! The dart I had made for Kevin was driven straight into Bill's eye."Ah!" Bill screamed and fell to the ground, clutching his eye.The shotgun went off at the same time, blasting a hole in the ceiling."Dad, run!" Flint shouted before quickly slipping into a pile of abandoned machinery nearby. So, he had been pretending to betray me.He had risked his life to create an opening for me.I was deeply moved, and I didn't want to run anymore.I picked up the metal pipe and charged straight into the crowd. "I'm coming for you!"The dozen or so thugs were caught completely off guard. Bill was badly injured, and they had no idea what

Kevin used to tell me that he had hidden a "treasure" inside the exhaust vent in Workshop No. 2.I always thought he meant marbles or trading cards.Could it be...I struggled to my feet. "Let's go to the exhaust vent!"Flint and I helped each other walk over to the vent in the corner. The screws were completely rusted shut, so I used the metal pipe to pry the grate open.I reached inside and felt around. There was nothing but dust and rat droppings.Just as I was about to give up, my fingers touched something hard.It was a small box wrapped in several layers of plastic. My hands trembled as I opened it.Inside was an old cellphone. It was Kevin's phone. After the accident, the police had only found his clothes. His phone had never been recovered.I held down the power button, but the phone wouldn't turn on.The battery was dead.Flint pulled a tiny power bank from his pocket. "I have a power bank! I stole it from Bill."I connected it to the phone. After a few minutes, the screen fin

I had worked security for years, but I was getting older. My ankle was also injured, so I quickly found myself at a disadvantage. The thug kicked me hard in the stomach. I dropped to my knees in pain."Kill him now!" Bill shouted. The thug raised his metal pipe and prepared to smash my head.At that critical moment, the bound boy suddenly moved.Somehow, he had already worked the ropes loose. He jumped up and bit down hard on Bill's wrist."Ouch!" Bill screamed. The knife fell from his hand. The boy picked it up. Instead of running, he charged at the thug and drove the knife deep into his thigh.Squish!Blood sprayed everywhere. The thug screamed and collapsed.I took the chance to grab the metal pipe and swung it with all my strength. It struck the thug's head, knocking him unconscious. The situation had completely changed.Bill clutched his bleeding wrist and stared at the blood-covered boy in horror. "Damn! You little brat..."The boy stood in front of me, holding the bloody knife.

The moment the car door closed, the boy secretly dropped his game console onto the ground.I waited until the car was gone before running over to pick it up.It was an old handheld game console. There was no game cartridge inside. But when I opened the battery compartment, I found a crumpled piece of paper hidden inside.I unfolded it.There was a crooked line of handwriting. "Help me. They're going to kill me tonight at 10 p.m. at an abandoned textile mill in Westfield."The abandoned textile mill in Westfield was Kevin's favorite place to explore.I couldn't tell if this boy was putting on another act or if he was really asking me for help.If it was a trap, going there would mean walking straight into it.But if it was real...I remembered the desperate look in his eyes when he glanced at me before getting into the car. There had also been a tiny bit of hope in that look.It was exactly the same look Kevin used to give me whenever he begged me to buy him a new toy.I decided to go.

After saying that, he walked away.I watched him disappear and finally stopped shouting. My anger had reached its limit. Instead, it turned into a terrifying desire to kill. But I couldn't lose my mind.I couldn't go to prison either.I had to get out so I could avenge Kevin.I looked up at the small window high on the wall of the holding cell. My eyes slowly turned cold and fierce.I worked security for a living, so I knew how to escape. Two in the morning was the quietest time in the station.I took off my jacket and tore the shirt underneath into strips. Then I tied the strips together to make a rope. This was only a temporary holding cell, so security wasn't very tight.Earlier, when I had slammed into the bars, I noticed that one of them was loose.I grabbed the rusty bar and pulled with all my strength. It bent. The rust tore open my palm, and blood began pouring out. I didn't even feel the pain.I climbed up like a lizard and squeezed through the small window. But when I landed

I screamed from inside the interrogation room, "Officer, that kid started the fire himself! He's framing me! He's pretending to be my son!"The officer threw a report onto the table. "The DNA results aren't ready yet. But we found plenty of your fingerprints in your apartment. And we found this."He pulled out a photo. It showed the smashed camera."Your fingerprints are the only ones on it. Your neighbors also said they heard screaming from your apartment last night. Justin, are you under so much pressure from your debts that you've developed a mental disorder?"A mental disorder?Did they want to send me to a mental hospital? Then I suddenly understood. If they could make everyone believe I was mentally ill, my legal guardian—my ex-wife, Mandy—could take control of my property and sell my apartment. Her plan was beyond cruel.I forced myself to calm down. "I want to see the boy. I have questions for him."The officer's voice was cold. "He's traumatized, so he's being kept at the hosp
