Chapter 4

Author: Frosted Moon
The scene was eerily familiar.

As the most well-known beast-taming family in the city, the Wyndhams had made countless enemies over the years.

In Selene's past life, when she and Vanessa attended a festival, they were ambushed by bandits. Zirion was Selene's familiar, yet he went to protect Vanessa.

With no one shielding her, the bandits wounded Selene grievously. Out of anger, Selene's mom, Hilda Bailey, locked Zirion in a water prison for three days and nights. Then, she made him kneel outside Selene's bedchamber to beg for her forgiveness.

It had also been a rainy night like this one.

Although Selene wasn't pleased with Zirion, she still felt sorry for him when he was in such a pitiful state. She allowed him to rise after a short while.

"Why don't you want me, Ms. Wyndham?" Zirion asked.

As Selene looked at Zirion, she suddenly found her past self ridiculous. Zirion had done his part as her familiar most of the time, yet she had always gotten a faint inkling that something was off from his actions and behavior.

Selene had believed that he was the one who had saved her back then, so she had tolerated him again and again. She had never expected that her feelings born from that debt of gratitude would ultimately lead to her own demise.

She gave a cold laugh and folded her arms. "Who are you?"

"I… I am Zirion. At the beast pit, you picked…"

His Adam's apple bobbed, as though he could not bear to say the words. After a while, he said almost inaudibly, "I'm the beastman you originally picked."

"Still trying to cling to me, huh?" Selene thought, making her way down the stairs until she stood right before him.

"Then tell me, Zirion."

She looked down at him, standing one step away from him as he kneeled right outside where the eaves didn't shield him from the rain.

"Why would I want you?" Selene asked with a smile, but her tone was icy and cutting.

At her words, Zirion lowered his gaze and slowly undid his sash. At once, the thin and drenched white shirt slipped from his body.

Selene knew what he was doing. He wanted her to see the scar on his waist and go soft on him. So, she thought she would let him have his way. As her eyes lingered on the scar, her smile faded.

She faintly heard Zirion let out a breath of air, as if in relief.

"This scar of yours…" Selene whispered, tracing it from his abdomen to his waist with her finger. Though his scar was in the exact same spot as Fenric's, Selene realized it was newer the moment she touched it. It was not an old wound at all. It was just as she thought… Zirion was as shameless as ever!

"Zirion, this scar of yours is truly ugly."

At once, Zirion's body stiffened. His eyes widened with disbelief.

"Fenric!" Selene called out.

At once, Fenric emerged from her bedchamber. "H-Here!"

Now dressed in a guard's uniform, he strode quickly to Selene's side at her order.

Upon seeing Fenric, Zirion's eyes dimmed completely. His lips moved weakly, and he asked almost inaudibly, "Why… Why did he come out of your…"

Selene ignored his murmurs. Instead, she smiled at Fenric and said, "What did I just teach you? What must a personal guard do?"

"I must always stay by your side and kill anyone who tries to harm you…" Fenric's voice trailed off when he noticed the kneeling Zirion. At the next moment, he asked, "Should I kill him?"

Selene's gaze became steely. "This is your first lesson. He entered my quarters without my permission. Tell me, should he be killed?"

Fenric thought for a moment before nodding and saying, "He should."

Selene stepped back. "Then do it."

Without hesitation, Fenric drew his sword.

"Ms. Wyndham!" Zirion's voice broke in near despair. His forehead hit the ground hard as he prostrated himself and begged, "No, Ms. Wyndham… I begged so hard… for this chance. There… is no chance anymore…"

His voice grew weaker and weaker until his body collapsed to the ground as he fell unconscious. The downpour continued to pelt down on his frail form mercilessly.

When Selene returned to the inn, she found Fenric weeping inconsolably for the very first time. She had to coax and comfort him for almost the whole night before both of them finally fell asleep. The next day, they returned to the foot of Mt. Canmir with the emerald pendant. There were indeed signs of a fight, but there was no one there. For some reason, Selene thought of Zirion."Aren't we going up?" Fenric asked."Let's go," Selene replied. At last, they met Iris."Greetings, Aunt Iris," Selene greeted respectfully.Iris waved her hand casually and said, "Spare me those meaningless formalities. I heard not long ago that two young people were looking for me. That must've been you?"Selene nodded. "Yes. Why do you refuse to see any visitors?""When I first came to Farning Abbey, many different forces tried to recruit me. I grew annoyed, so I refused to see anyone.""So, that's how it is…"Selene hesitated. She wasn't sure how to begin. Judging from Iris' demeanor, she clearl

When Selene heard those words, she only found them laughable from the depths of her heart."Do you think I'd still believe you?" Selene asked mockingly. The memory of Zirion demanding that she use him in her dungeon flashed before her mind's eye. She had still been thinking whether she could believe him when news of his escape reached her. How could she ever believe a man like that?"The emerald pendant is with me," Zirion said."What?" Selene instantly turned around.Zirion leaned in closer, his face stopping no more than a finger's breadth from hers. She could feel his damp, heated breath on her face. At such proximity, she could clearly see the scar over his left eye. Though it was not deep, it ran long. The scar looked fresh and poorly tended to.When Zirion realized she had noticed, he turned his head and showed her the right side of his face. He explained, "I didn't steal it. I… took it back from the man who was following you."Though Selene had no interest in asking about

When Selene woke up, she smelled the fragrance from a calming pastille. That scent was so familiar to her in her previous life that even though she hadn't smelled it at all in this one, she still remembered it fondly. It came from the pastille Zirion had always lit by habit whenever she went to bed.Selene opened her eyes slowly and saw the modest ceiling above her. She glanced around lazily. The small house was not refined in its furnishings, but it felt warm and homely. In the corner, a fire burned brightly, crackling with sharp little pops.At last, her gaze settled on the handsome man resting at the table with his head propped against one hand as he dozed. There was a vertical scar right over Zirion's left eye. It looked ghastly upon taking a closer look. Strangely, it lent his striking features a touch of ferocity, which made him appear more mature.Suddenly, Zirion's eyes snapped open. The moment their gazes met, a flood of unreadable emotions surged in his eyes. He turne

Selene and Fenric rested at an inn for the night. At dawn the next morning, they hurried to the gates of Farning Abbey on Mt. Canmir."Are you here to confess or to pray for blessings?" asked a man at the gates.Selene shook her head and replied, "Neither. We're here to look for someone.""To look for someone?""Yes. Does Iris live here?"The man's relaxed gaze grew guarded, and he even took a step back. "You came looking for her? Then, I'm afraid your trip was in vain. You may leave now."With that, he started to shut the gates."Wait!" Selene cried out in confusion, hurrying to stop him. "What do you mean by this?"The man opened the gates only a crack and looked at her through the narrow slit. "This is not my decision. It is hers. She refuses to see anyone."Selene had expected such a situation. She quickly rummaged through her bag for something. "I have a token. If she sees it, she'll agree to meet me."Back when Iris and Selene were close, Iris had given her an emerald p

Once everyone had gathered, Selene gave Fenric a subtle look.He nodded and said, "You've all heard something about the merman's escape. Now, Ms. Wyndham suspects there's a traitor in the estate. In consideration of the years you've been in service, she won't deal with you too harshly."Fenric stepped down and paced around the crowd."Ms. Wyndham has decided to forgive any wrong you may have committed against her in the past. But now, you have two paths to choose from. If you want to leave, you may take one stack of silver coins now and depart. After this, you'll never be allowed to set foot inside this estate again."If you would like to continue serving Ms. Wyndham, then you will each go in and speak with her one by one. Vanessa's expression faltered for a moment, but she quickly composed herself. Turning to stare straight into Selene's eyes, she asked, "Yes, but didn't you already refuse?"She didn't admit to Selene's accusation, yet her reaction had betrayed her."In that case, if I were to kill Zirion in the dungeon, you wouldn't blame me, would you? Keeping such a disobedient guard by your side is a recipe for disaster," Selene said, gauging Vanessa's reaction.Panic was practically written all over Vanessa's face as she replied, "Zirion is my personal guard. Even if he has done something wrong, it is I who should punish him. How could you take matters into your own hands?"Her voice rose due to her riled-up emotions. She drew glances from those who were nearby. Upon noticing, she hastily lowered her tone."Please don't harm him, Selene. I know you're angry. I won't utter one word of complaint should you wish to punish me. But please don't kill him. Since you dislike him so much, I promise I'
