Present Day

The envelope arrives at 6 AM, hand-delivered by a courier who apologizes for the early hour.

Aria knows what it is before she opens it.

The legal papers crackle in her hands as she reads the header: "Petition for Modified Custody and Visitation Rights."

  • The Spy Who Left   The Complication

Present Day - Friday AfternoonRebecca Webb stands in Aria's living room like a ghost from Marcus's past, her designer heels clicking nervously on the hardwood floor. She's exactly what Aria expected and nothing like she prepared for.Tall, blonde, impeccably dressed. The kind of woman who looks like she's never had an ungraceful moment in her life. The kind of woman who's still legally married to Aria's husband."I know this is awkward," Rebecca says, her voice carrying the slight accent Aria remembers Marcus mentioning. "But we need to talk."Sophie sits at the kitchen table, coloring with determined focus while pretending not to listen to the adult conversation happening ten feet away.Marcus paces by the window, checking the street for surveillance every few seconds."You said someone approached you," Aria says, trying to keep her voice steady. "Tell me exactly what happened."Rebecca perches on the edge of the sofa like she might need to run at any moment."Tuesday morning, a man

Marcus asks, appearing in the doorway with his own cup of coffee."No. Just the one.""That's good, right?"Aria looks at him like he's lost his mind."Someone threatened our four-year-old daughter, Marcus. There's nothing good about any of this."He sits beside her, his hand finding hers across the table."I called the school. They're adding extra security during pickup and drop-off.""Extra security won't stop someone who's determined enough.""What do you want to do?"The question she's been wrestling with all night."I want to pull Sophie out of school and disappear until this is over.""And?""And I know that's exactly wha
