Chapter 3

Author: Shell Flower
However, it was from that day onward that Christian and I truly stopped feeling like siblings.

The sound of the private room door clicking open snapped me back to reality. A tall, elegant woman walked in, picked up the stomach medicine on the table, and naturally took a seat right next to Christian.

“Your gastritis is always acting up, and I knew you’d end up drinking tonight, so I made sure to get you your medicine ahead of time,” she said.

She was beautiful, with a stunning figure, and her voice was incredibly gentle and sweet.

A spark of warmth finally seemed to return to Christian’s eyes. However, when he turned his gaze back to me, that same old contempt and detachment returned.

“Have you made up your mind yet? Are you drinking it or not?”

Staring into his unfamiliar, almost merciless eyes, I clenched my fists tightly.

“I’m sorry, but I’m just a delivery rider. I have every right to refuse your unreasonable demands.”

It wasn’t like this would be the first time a landlord kicked me out. Compared to the four years of drifting aimlessly abroad, why would a little financial hardship matter now?

I had turned around once more to leave, but my hand had just touched the doorknob when a glass bottle shattered violently right at my feet. I screamed, spinning around to look at Christian. His arm was still half-extended from throwing the bottle, and his face was twisted in sheer fury. Even his neck was flushed red.

“How dare you refuse! Who the hell do you think you are to talk about rights in front of me? Can you bring my father back to life? Can you give me my family back?”

Sitting right next to him, Viv was so startled that she quickly stood up to hold him back. However, in the next second, Christian grabbed the back of Viv’s head and pulled her into a passionate kiss.

The cheers and wild applause echoing through the room stood in stark contrast to my broken spirit. It looked like he had finally found the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Yet, back then, he was the one who had fought so desperately to make my wishes come true.

When we returned to campus after that winter break, the dynamic between Christian and me shifted subtly. He was already a senior, so he was rarely on campus anymore. Whenever he did return, he looked utterly exhausted. A heavy burden clearly weighed down his mind.

Whenever I asked, he would never say a word, and we seemed to be drifting further and further apart. I blamed myself constantly, wondering if what happened over winter break made him feel like I had ruined our relationship.

That was until I received a phone call from my mother.

“Nova, must you tear this family apart? Will that make you happy? If you refuse to stop acting so foolishly, harboring these delusional fantasies, I will send you overseas immediately.”

I hadn’t done anything at all. I hadn’t even seen Christian in two whole weeks.

How had it become a delusional fantasy?

It wasn’t until later that I found out Christian had been trying everything he could to make my wish a reality. He wanted to remove himself from our family legally, and he was even planning to apply for grad school at my university just to stay by my side.

The most recent argument he had with our parents escalated because he blurted out that our father and mother should just get a divorce. As long as they divorced, we would no longer be stepsiblings, and if that happened, we could finally be together out in the open.

Even though my mother had screamed at me, I didn’t feel sad at all. At that moment, I finally knew how Christian truly felt about me. He loved me, and being together forever was no longer just an impossible, far-fetched dream.

Back in the present, chanting erupted inside the private room.

“Propose! Propose! Say yes to him!”

Perhaps the atmosphere was just too overwhelming, or perhaps I was simply invisible, but no one noticed when I slipped out of the room. No one knew just how long I sat by the curb outside, crying my eyes out, either.

The January wind was freezing. However, of course, there was news waiting for me that was far colder than any winter night.

Her hand was cold and thin, feeling exactly like a withered leaf.“Nova… I’m so sorry…” she whispered, her voice incredibly frail.Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes and splashed onto the back of my hand, feeling scalding hot against my skin.“I just wanted to hold onto your father’s house… I wanted people to look up to us… It’s my fault. I ruined your life. Can you ever forgive me?”I stared down at her, looking into the tears pooling in her clouded eyes. Seeing the regret on her face weighed heavily on my chest, leaving me feeling suffocated.Memories of my childhood flashed through my mind, back when my mother would hold me close and hum a lullaby to rock me to sleep. I remembered the very first time she ever hit me, and the deep pain and helplessness in her eyes right afterward. I remembered when she put me on that plane, and how she secretly wiped away her tears the moment she turned around. As it turned out, her life hadn’t been easy either. She was just another poor

I thought about that photograph. The girl in the picture looked so calm, yet so lost. And the person who took that shot, how much must his heart have been aching?I carefully tucked the photo inside an old book and kept it on my nightstand. Every night before bed, I would take it out and look at it. I would look at myself in the picture, read the lyric written on the back, and trace the unspoken love hidden within those words. As the days bled into one another, I kept tending to my orchard and my vegetable garden, living a quiet life. The only thing different was that I had developed a new longing for Christian.… In the blink of an eye, twenty years passed. I was no longer that twenty-something-year-old girl. Fine wrinkles had crept around the corners of my eyes, a few silver strands streaked my hair, my hands were heavily calloused, and my skin had turned a sun-kissed tan.The apple and pear trees in the orchard had long since matured and borne fruit. Every autumn, the branche

I sobbed uncontrollably as years of pent-up grievances, agonizing longing, and tangled love and hatred finally poured out in a torrent of scalding tears. Viv didn’t say another word. She just sat quietly by my side, keeping me company. As the sun began to set, it cast a golden hue across the small creek, making the water shimmer. In the distance, smoke drifted from chimneys, and the faint sounds of farm animals came from the town. Everything about the countryside felt peaceful and beautiful. However, my mind was a chaotic mess.“Nova, I can tell you’re not the person they say you are,” Viv said. “Because I know Christian. He wouldn’t fall in love with the wrong person. Can you tell me what you went through back then?”This was the very first time I had ever spoken to anyone about my four years abroad. When I initially ran into Christian, I didn’t say anything because he never gave me the chance. Later on, I kept quiet because it felt pointless. But now, the truths buried deep within

Only he knew the true extent of the hell he went through.“The day you left the country, his father committed suicide,” Viv said. “Your mother told Christian that you had scammed the family out of every last cent before fleeing abroad, leaving them bankrupt. She claimed his father ended his own life out of pure despair and anger.”Hearing those words, an eerie sense of calm washed over me. Deep down, I had guessed as much. From the moment Christian and I crossed paths again, our relationship had been nothing but toxic hostility, so I knew my mother must have poisoned his mind.“The day of the funeral was absolute chaos,” Viv continued. “The police were investigating everything, and they arrested so many people involved in the business. Christian had to carry the entire weight of it on his own shoulders. He was running around, dealing with everything, until he became painfully thin.“Through all that, he kept saying he needed to find you. He was terrified that if you found out what

“Hey, kiddo. Are you sure about this? Farming is backbreaking work,” Mr. Miller said, looking at me skeptically.I nodded, my smile firm and determined. “I’m not afraid of hard work, sir.”Right then and there, I handed over a full year’s worth of rent. The only condition was that the lease wouldn’t officially start until my leg was healed. Mr. Miller couldn’t argue with my persistence, so he finally accepted the money. He even offered to help me source some seeds and baby chicks to get me started.Three months later, my leg injury had fully healed. From that point on, my days became busy and fulfilling. Every morning, I woke up before dawn to weed the orchard. Although I still couldn’t manage heavy labor, simple chores were no problem at all.The people in this small town were incredibly kind. Seeing that I was an outsider struggling to make it on my own, they often dropped by to lend a hand. Mrs. Davis brought me a whole basket of fresh eggs, and Mr. Miller helped me till two acr

As I stood there confused, a soft voice called out from behind me.“Nova.”I turned around to see that Viv was standing just a short distance away. She was holding some takeout with a perfectly practiced, gentle smile on her face. She looked poised and proper. She quickly walked over and reached out to support me. Instinctively, I pulled my arm back, but Viv didn’t seem embarrassed by the rejection. She simply placed the food on a nearby chair, let out a soft sigh, and said in a helpless tone, “I know there’s a lot of misunderstanding between you and Christian. He hasn’t had it easy over the past few years, and I’m sure you’ve suffered a lot too. But regardless of what happened in the past, at the end of the day, you’re still his sister.“We’re all going to be family in the future anyway. I’ve arranged a room for you here at the hospital. Right now, the most important thing is for you to recover.”Family…I couldn’t help but flash her a self-deprecating smirk. Christian and I h
