“M-mum?” The word ripped out of my throat before I could stop it, my voice trembling in disbelief. My whole body shook to the core.

They both jerked apart like guilty criminals caught in the middle of a crime. While Charles’ face drained of color and his lips parted in shock, my mum was… indifferent, emotionless, facial expression unreadable.

My heart hammered against my ribs, every beat threatening to split me open. I blinked severally, trying to tell myself that this wasn’t real. My mum and Charles, were a figment of my imagination. It had to be. Because if they were both really having an affair? Our family… was fucked.

“I…” My throat was tight, but I forced the words out. “I was hoping I was wrong”

Charles stumbled forward, his hand raised as though his pitiful gesture would erase the abomination I had just seen.

“Elizabeth, this… this isn’t what it looks like. I can explain” he said, a silly attempt at being cliche.

I stood, staring at them both, unable to cough out another word.

I stood in front of the mirror, the stylist Aaron has now made my personal permanent stylist, Andrea, tugging at the hem of my dress, smoothing the last invisible crease. She had brought so many exotic options because I had told her to bring something classy, exclusive, and sophisticated, something my mother would approve of. And she did just that: She brought dresses that Alexis Knight would have handpicked herself. But as I tried them on, I told myself no. I was going to wear things I wanted to wear, I would not be forced to wear things I didn’t like just to impress my mum. And even though I liked the dresses, as long as my mum would love them, I was not going to wear them.I didn’t want her to be impressed by me. I was done doing that rubbish. So I ditched all the gowns she had brought even though they had all already been paid for, and went into my closet and brought out something that felt more like me.A simple but elegant and also hella expensive midnight blue dress that had s

“I was disappointed in you,” I said with a heavy frown. We were having a conversation now that I initially didn't want to have. But Aaron had insisted and once again had me rooted with those commanding eyes of his.“You were just being sentimental instead of logical. Taylor and Ryan’s issues are not our concern. However, I do get your sentiments and maybe I should have spoken with more tact, so…” he shifted a bit. “Forgive me”I blinked and looked away, wanting to act tough, but deep down, I was already melting. Since we started having the conversation, he had been apologetic instead of defensive, and that sort of calmed me down.“Did you speak to Ryan?” I asked.“It's not in my place”“Can't you at least put in a good word for Taylor?”“Elizabeth, I will not” his voice left no room for further discussion concerning this matter.“She’s adamant about not telling him she didn't have an abortion. And she's insisting on leaving” I said, feeling sad all over again.I had spent the last few

“Okay, you've got to tell me what all that was about,” Aaron told me immediately we were alone.“What was what all about?“The annoyance at the table and you snapping at Ryan. I have never seen you snap at Ryan before. And then you gave him the cold shoulder till he left. What did you and Taylor discuss in the kitchen? Because that's when your attitude towards him changed. I've told you before not to interfere in their relationship”“I am not interfering in their relationship”“Then explain to me what that was all about”I sighed tiredly as I slumped into the bed. “Aaron can we not?”He crossed his arms akimbo and gave me a warning look.“Fine!” I said with an exasperated sigh. “Ryan got Taylor pregnant”He raised a brow.“And he wants her to have an abortion”“Okay. And?”I looked at him sharply. “And? What do you mean by ‘and’? Like it's the most normal thing in the world”“Well, it's not the most abnormal thing in the world. You know the situation of their relationship, having a ba

“What?” “But I don't want to lose this baby Beth, I want to keep it” she looked at me teary-eyed. “Wait wait hold up!” I said raising my hand, I was still in shock, I was trying to process everything. “You are pregnant?” I gasped. “Oh my God Taylor! That's good news. Jesus” She gave me a sad smile. “It is. Or rather, it's supposed to be” Hearing that Taylor was pregnant is.. Or rather supposed to be good news. Five years ago, Taylor had been in an accident with her mother. She had survived, but her mother didn't. She had said that the memories of the accident were hazy but the last thing she remembered was having a sharp pain in her abdomen before she blacked out. And when she had woken up, before breaking the news of her mother’s death to her, the doctor had told her that the crash had caused internal bleeding in her pelvis, and an emergency surgery had to be performed to remove her left ovary. While her right ovary survived, the trauma had been really significant and be

“I want you to move into my room officially,” Aaron said.We were seated at our favourite spot in the garden. He sat on the bench while I relaxed on his body.“I already spend every single night in your room. You don’t let me go back to mine except to have a change of clothes” I reminded him with a smile on my face.“Yeah, I know. But I want you to think of my room as your room, not just my room. Earlier on when Heather said your clothes had been sent back from the laundry room, you said you wanted them dropped off in your room. If you’ve officially moved into my room, you wouldn’t have said ‘your room’” he said, ending it with a pout.I laughed. “You can’t be serious”“I am. I want you moving fully into mine. There’s enough space in my closet. Move your things into mine”“Obsessed much Mr Vanderbilt?” I smirked.“Only with you Mrs Vanderbilt”” he pulled my cheeks playfully and we both laughed.“When do you want Heather and Anna to move my things?” I asked. His eyes widened in excitem
