“Babe, you just left without…” Vivienne started, but then froze when she saw us.
Her eyes went wide when she saw us, me in Aaron’s arms.
“What the hell?” she gasped.
“I’ll be with you shortly, Vivienne,” Aaron said, walking without stopping.
I could feel her confused glare, and I almost wanted to stick out my tongue at her. I liked the way she looked.
Silly girl! I wish I could see that horror look on her face more often.
We were halfway up the stairs when she followed us, her steps stomping the ground. I could feel her fury.
“Aaron, I demand an explanation this minute!” she charged like a nagging wife.
Aaron paused now, slightly turning his neck to face her. “Vivienne, wait for me. I'll come to you shortly,” he said, that familiar hint of command in his voice, and continued walking.
I heard her sigh out loud. But she stopped walking anyway.
He opened the door quietly when we got to my room before walking in and placing me on the bed, gently.
He looked at me for a quick second before turning to leave.
“Aaron,” I stopped him. He didn't turn, but stopped, “Thank you very much,” I said.
I didn't know what would have happened with Moris if not for his timely intervention. Also, it was very convenient getting to my room because he helped me.
He turned to me, simply nodded, and then left.
My head pounded heavily, and I promised myself never to drink this much again. But who was I kidding? For every time I had been this drunk, I had made this vow over and over again, and I broke it each time.
I heard rustling from outside the door, then I heard Vivienne’s voice. She must have followed us still.
Her voice was distant, but I strained my ears, curiously.
“…Aaron, what was that? You left the house without telling me. I tried calling, but you kept rejecting my calls, no explanation, nothing. You just left. And then you come back with her? Carrying her in your arms? Did you go out there to look for her?”
Her voice sounded muffled because of the door demarcation us but I could still hear the anger it exuded.
“Were you worried about her? Did you miss her? I thought you said she meant nothing to you!” she continued.
“It's not what you think, Vivienne. And I'm not in the mood to explain myself,” I heard Aaron say. He sounded tired.
“There would be no peace in this house until you explain yourself right this minute! How do you think I feel about all of this? Does she matter to you now?” I could hear her voice cracking a little.
“I’m sorry for not telling you before leaving. Everything happened so fast. Besides, I met her in a state I couldn't leave her in…”
They must have started walking away, cos their voices got fainter and fainter until I couldn't hear them anymore.
My feet hurt like hell, but I was too weak to move, so I just lay there, taking in the beautiful design of the ceiling.
I thought of Taylor and I wondered where she was and if she was still at the party, or if she left before I did. Or maybe she had gone back to look for me, but I wasn't there.
She would have been worried, but I was too weak to reach for my phone right now. However, I made a mental note to call her in the morning. I trust she was safe.
The alcohol effects had begun to wear off a little. I thought of the conversation we had in the car. And even though short, it was better than the last time we spoke, really spoke.
I told myself I was not going to think about what he had said about my dad blackmailing Charles Vanderbilt. But I was surely going to ask my dad for clarity, even though I believed my dad would never do such.
I must have lain motionless on my bed for minutes when I heard a knock on the door.
I wondered who it was.
Aaron? Had he come back to check up on me?
Or Vivienne? Had she come to scold me for being with her man, who was my husband, by the way? I hoped it wasn't her. I was not in a good state right now, not when I could barely keep my eyes open.
The door opened slightly. It was Heather.
I was surprised. It was almost 3am. The housekeepers do not work around the clock, or do they?
She looked like she had been sleeping, her face was a bit swollen, and she wasn't in her formal uniform.
She had a tray in her hand.
“Hello, ma'am,” she said with a soft smile as she entered the room, “I brought Advil for you.”
I could see the contents of the tray now. Advil and a glass of water.
I sat up gently, wincing, “You're an angel. How did you know I needed it?” I asked as I stretched my hand for the tablet.
“Mr Aaron said you might need it,” she simply said, placing the tray on my nightstand.
I furrowed my brows, “Aaron?” I asked to be sure I heard right.
Surely, he didn't care about me that much.
“Yes, ma'am. And also to help take your shoes off.”
He must have taken note of that before he left.
To say I was pleasantly surprised would not quite cover how I felt at this surprisingly kind gesture of his.
Aaron Vanderbilt, what kind of man are you really?
Are you an arrogant jerk, or was that a facade?
I took the Advil as Heather helped take off my shoes, out of my dress, and into pyjamas she had helped pick out from the closet.
She left after making sure I wouldn't be anything else soon.
As I lay on the bed, almost falling asleep, I couldn't help but think of Aaron. His unreadable face, his confusing kindness…
And how incredibly good my husband smelled. And how much I liked his manly scent.
“Noah, what..?”“I told you I would come back for you. I also said that when the time is right, we will be together again. We are soulmates, Pumpkin,” Noah said.I looked at him like he was insane. “I don't think you're serious right now. I am a married woman. I think you're forgetting that”“Well I don't see you wearing your ring right now,” he said eyeing my fingers.Yeah, I wasn't wearing it. It's not that I forgot; I just didn't feel like it.“I-i forgot to wear it,” I said “but that doesn't change anything. I am Mrs Vanderbilt”“Well if you really loved your husband and you're happy in your marriage, you wouldn't be here”Damn! He was right. But I wasn't going to tell him that.“You don't get to leave me abruptly and then just stroll back in four years later and expect me to just run back to you, into your arms. Like I had been waiting for you all along” I said.I did wait for him, but along the way, I stopped waiting.“I have moved on Noah. So many things have happened. Life go
ELIZABETH’S POV.I didn't resist when he began guiding me away, his hand still firm on my waist.I felt color form on my cheeks. I was beyond stunned, at what had just happened. My mother’s words, Aaron stepping up to pull me away, and telling my mother off, the proximity of our bodies.“We are leaving right now,” he said leaning closer towards my ears. His hot breath fanned me.I merely nodded, still unable to form my words properly.“My darlings,” came the shrill voice of Joyce Vanderbilt as she bumped into us.Even though I was still rattled, I smiled sweetly at her. I liked the woman. She radiated so much positive energy, the complete opposite of her husband.“Hello Joyce,” I said.“Oh Elizabeth, I can't help but be in awe of your beauty every single time! You look so divine in that dress. So perfect” she gushed, taking my hand in hers. She complimented me. Something my mother would never do.“Thank you,” I said trying not to glance at Aaron who still had his hands on my waist. He
AARON’S POV.She looked beautiful, my wife. Immediately we entered the hall for the gala, she quickly disappeared from my side, but when i searched for her, i saw her talking with her dad.I was soon engaged in small talk and potential business partners, but that didn't distract me from stealing glances at her often.More often than i wanted. I didn't understand why i did that. But i just couldn't stop myself. When i looked her at again, for what seemed like the hundredth time, our eyes met. She quickly looked away, but my eyes were too silly to do the same. This time i didn't look away quickly, until i saw her walking to a direction. I tipped my head a little to observe where she was headed. She was headed in the direction of her mum and my dad who were discussing.“So Mr Vanderbilt,” the man I had been talking to said, pulling my attention away from Elizabeth.“I am really interested in investing in this new project your company is venturing into. And now that VD Industries has mer
I was itching to hear what my mum and father-in-law were discussing so badly. I was so curious that I decided to go there, even if it meant being in my mum's breathing space.I walked closer to them hoping to catch something before they saw me.Perhaps I didn't move quickly enough because my mum saw me before I could get closer to them.Initially, Charles was backing in my direction, but it seemed my mum had given a signal or something because he suddenly turned and faced me.Shit.I almost wanted to turn back. Mission failed. I didn't want to have a conversation with either of them. But it was too late.“Elizabeth,” Charles said with a smile on his face. “You look beautiful as usual. Where's Aaron?” He asked looking around.I forced a smile and pointed in the direction I had seen Aaron.“I’ll excuse you two then” He gave my mum a knowing glance, and he walked away.My mum looked at him briefly as he left before returning her gaze to me. I tried my best to study their body language b
The first few minutes of the car ride were quiet.I sat stiffly beside Aaron, every part of me aware of his presence. He had given me a slight nod of acknowledgment when I came down, but that was it.While his eyes remained fixated on the window, I couldn't help but steal glances at him occasionally. He looked dapper in his well-tailored tux. Effortlessly powerful and confident. He looked devastatingly handsome. It was maddening. After what had seemed like forever, he finally turned to me.“Elizabeth,” his voice was calm, but firm. “I need to throw in some rules”I rolled my eyes. What rules again this time?“The way you were dressed earlier today,” He paused slightly, as though choosing his words carefully.“You are no longer allowed to dress that way around the house, especially when I have visitors… male visitors,” he said.I shot him a glare, my annoyance building up.“Excuse me. I had no idea you were even home or that you had a visitor. It must be so sinful for a girl to dress c
Aaron’s POVWhen we got into the car, I quickly regretted inviting Ryan over.He had this smug irritating grin and I knew he was up to no good.“Damn bro,” he said as he leaned backward “Life is always so fair to you. It's not every day you have a gem handed to you on a platter of gold! You're so lucky man”I groaned. “What nonsense are you on about this time?”“Your wife is smoking hot, fuck! If I had met her even a day before your wedding day, I would have convinced her to jilt you for me, and we would run away to some islands, I'm not joking”“Was that why you looked like you wanted to undress her there and then?”He laughed. That motherfucker.“Was it noticeable? Those bare thighs though. Does she walk around the house like that? I wouldn't resist the urge to bend her over every single time if I were in your shoes”I clenched my jaw subconsciously. “Don't talk about my wife..” I stopped myself “Don’t talk about Elizabeth in that manner”That familiar mischievous glint returned to
