Chapter 4

Author: Wayne Wyeth
Even after blocking a whole string of accounts, I still saw plenty of comments.

"What kind of person does this?"

"His family's loaded, but he runs out on a dinner bill? They should call him Mr. Penny-Pincher."

"I've seen Landon Fairchild around campus. He's good-looking, but I never knew he was such a monster."

"Having that garbage at our school is a stain on all of us."

I was furious. I'd just decided to confront Trevor when I spotted him coming straight toward me.

At his side marched our freshman academic advisor, Vivian Crane, looking ready for a fight.

She planted herself in front of me and spoke in the imperious tone of someone who expected to be obeyed.

"Landon Fairchild! You've made this university a laughingstock, and you don't even seem to care! Stop wasting time. Go pay that bill right now!"

I glanced at Trevor and caught the gleam of satisfaction he hadn't managed to hide.

So that was his plan.

He still intended to get his hands on my money. He'd simply enlisted someone with authority to do the dirty work.

Not this time.

"I wasn't the one who ate without paying," I replied calmly. "Why should I cover the bill?"

I tipped my chin toward Trevor.

"The person who damaged the university's reputation is standing right beside you. If you want someone to take responsibility, talk to him."

Trevor's eyes instantly filled with tears.

"But Landon, even if you didn't come to dinner, you looked at the pictures! You got to share the celebration and all those wonderful memories! How can you pretend you don't owe anything?"

Ms. Crane nodded as though he'd made an excellent legal argument.

"Trevor worked himself to the bone trying to bring the class together. What did he do wrong? The only person at fault here is you for dodging the bill!

"Your family has money. Paying for dinner should be nothing to you. Why are you being so stingy?

"We need this settled before the situation gets any worse!"

Her patience ran out. She seized my wrist and dragged me toward the street.

Her sharp acrylic nails broke the skin, leaving bloody scratches behind.

I didn't dare fight too hard. She was an advisor, and I knew she could turn the situation into another accusation of disrespecting university staff.

Instead, I shouted for help.

No one came.

The students and faculty we passed either watched without expression or openly enjoyed my humiliation. A few even abandoned what they were doing to follow us to the restaurant.

The tables were still covered in leftover food and dirty dishes.

My classmates sat among the mess, chatting as comfortably as if there were no looming payment deadline.

The sour smell made my stomach turn.

Before I could steady myself, Ms. Crane smacked the back of my head.

"What are you waiting for? Pay!"

My forehead struck the service counter. Stars burst across my vision, and I nearly threw up.

I clenched my teeth and forced out three words.

"I'm. Flat. Broke."

Everyone froze.

Trevor recovered first.

"Don't fall for it! Landon's the only son of the Fairchild family. Money is the one thing he's never short of!"

Then he added, apparently as an afterthought, "He always carries a black card."

Ms. Crane immediately lunged toward my pocket.

I curled up to shield the side where I kept my card, but the others rushed in to help her. Several people held me down as someone wrenched it away.

Trevor claimed his prize. Standing over me, he flashed a triumphant, challenging look.

He practically glowed with delight at my anger.

Before the watching crowd, he straightened his back and imitated the casual confidence I usually carried.

Then he held out my card.

"Dinner's on me, everyone! Run it!"

A second later, the card reader beeped.

"Transaction declined. Please try again."

Trevor's smile froze so abruptly that I almost laughed.

All his scheming had come to nothing.Trevor stared at the crumpled application in his hand, unwilling to accept defeat."But what about my $150,000 debt?""Figure it out yourself," I said coldly."I can't keep cleaning up your messes forever. You're an adult. You knew there would be consequences when you did this."He exploded."I was tricked, too!"Vivian said she'd help me! I thought someone had finally come to save me. But she only wanted me for sex!"And every gift she gave me was fake. None of it was worth anything!"He broke down sobbing, struggling to get the words out."I don't know what else to do. If I can't repay that loan, my whole life is over!"Landon, you've always been kind. Please, feel sorry for me one more time. Save me. I really have learned my lesson..."For an instant, the boy crying in front of me looked like the frail, half-starved kid I'd first met all those years ago.I felt a stab of sadness. Not because I wanted him back in my life, but becaus

"I-I'll make it up to you," Trevor stammered. "I'll do anything. I'll work for you, serve you, whatever you want! Just please keep sponsoring me until I graduate so I can repay my parents for all the years they've struggled."He addressed me as "Mr. Fairchild" with every other breath, sounding as humble as a servant. But the malice in his eyes was impossible to hide.My heart gave a hard thump.Something was wrong.I dropped my indifferent expression and watched him closely. Then I noticed it.For the first time, Trevor was wearing a flashy earring. Every so often, a tiny red light blinked from its surface. It was so small I hadn't seen it at first. No wonder he'd suddenly started begging for forgiveness after openly declaring war on me.This was his real plan.Same Trevor. Same dirty tricks. The only question was whether he was recording me or broadcasting live.My father, who hadn't contacted me in ages, suddenly sent a message."You're trending for all the wrong reason

I stared at the cheap ring and laughed to myself. That thing couldn't have cost more than two dollars with free shipping. Then I overheard a conversation at the next table."Our freshman advisor's delivery order had my phone number on it by mistake," one student said. "The courier called me, and I ended up collecting her package. Guess what was inside?"He raised his eyebrows suggestively. His friend covered her mouth. "You don't mean...""Oh, I do. One look at that stuff and my face went red."The advisor was in such a hurry that she had me deliver it straight to the motel beside campus."He lowered his voice."I'm telling you, she's not much to look at, but she's adventurous and loves pretending she's rich. She's fooled more than a few younger guys into getting involved with her. Wonder who the unlucky one is this time."My finger froze above the screen.I reopened Trevor's post and enlarged the photo.Through the gap between his fingers, I could make out part of a printe

"Too many frozen drinks at once aren't good for you," I said with a pleasant smile. "You should pace yourselves. Maybe next time."You'll get another chance."That single comment was enough to turn my classmates' resentment on Trevor. If he hadn't made such a fuss over those cheap drinks, they could have been enjoying the premium ice cream with everyone else.I glanced at him.He stood alone, fists clenched, glaring at me while the classmates he'd tried so hard to impress ignored him.I let my mouth curve into a challenging smile. In my previous life, that popularity had belonged to Trevor. He'd used my money to win over the entire freshman class, leaving them with a wonderful first impression of him.Word had spread across campus. Everyone felt sorry for poor Trevor and believed he was suffering under my abuse. They ignored my explanations, labeled me a heartless bully, and joined forces to ostracize me.This time, I'd acted first.I had the goodwill, the attention, and th

"What are we going to do? I don't want to go to jail!""Even if someone sold everything I own, it wouldn't come close to $150,000!"Some bystanders had started to feel sorry for the students. When they heard how much the dinner had cost, their sympathy evaporated.Who orders luxury liquor they can't afford? They'd brought this on themselves. My classmates started blaming each other."You had to order that out-of-season king crab! It cost a fortune, and there was barely any meat on it. You pay for that!""And you ordered plate after plate of abalone because you wanted to treat yourself. That wasn't free!"Eventually, every accusation pointed back to Trevor."What college student drinks liquor that expensive? Who gave you the nerve to order it?""We should never have gone! To hell with your stupid milestones!"Trevor tried to give them the familiar speech."I was only thinking of everyone. The occasion was supposed to be special..."No one wanted to hear another word about ma

"How is that possible?"Trevor was so shocked that his voice echoed through the restaurant. He didn't seem to notice. He was too busy waving the card at the manager."Your machine must be broken! Get another one!"The manager panicked and brought out every card reader the restaurant owned.Trevor tried them one after another.Every time, he heard the same response."Transaction declined. Please try again."With each failure, his face grew paler. By the last machine, he could barely stand. The others were so stunned that they forgot to keep holding me down.I slipped free, walked over, and picked up the black card Trevor had dropped. He was clutching his head and muttering, "No. No, that's impossible!"The tables had turned. Now I was the one looking down at him.I gave his bloodless cheek a light pat."I told you I didn't have any money. Believe me now?"Trevor snapped out of his daze and glared at me."That card has a daily spending limit of $750,000! How could the pa
