POV: Charlotte

The silence after my no lasted exactly long enough for Victoria to understand that I meant it.

Then she laughed.

Not cruelly. Not dramatically. Just a short, disbelieving sound, like I’d said something that didn’t quite compute, like she’d misheard me and was giving me the opportunity to correct myself.

“Charlotte,” she said.

“Victoria,” I said.

“You’re not being serious.”

“I am,” I said. “Completely.”

She uncrossed her arms. Set her hands on her knees. Looked at

POV: Charlotte The silence after my no lasted exactly long enough for Victoria to understand that I meant it. Then she laughed. Not cruelly. Not dramatically. Just a short, disbelieving sound, like I’d said something that didn’t quite compute, like she’d misheard me and was giving me the opportunity to correct myself. “Charlotte,” she said. “Victoria,” I said. “You’re not being serious.” “I am,” I said. “Completely.” She uncrossed her arms. Set her hands on her knees. Looked at me with that expression I’d seen a thousand times growing up, the one that meant she was shifting gears, moving from the reasonable approach to the one she used when the reasonable approach hadn’t worked. “You know this isn’t what anyone planned,” she said. “You know that you were never supposed to be in this position permanently. You stepped in because the family needed you to, and nobody is saying you didn’t do that well, but that’s not the same as it being yours.” “It is mine,” I said. “I

  • The Substitute Bride Of The Blackwood    Chapter 52: The Whitmore House

POV: Charlotte The gates looked smaller than I remembered. I sat in the car for a moment after the driver pulled up, looking at the iron scrollwork I’d walked through thousands of times without ever once stopping to look at it, and I had flashes about the last time I’d stood on this side of them. Wedding morning. White roses in three vans. My mother’s voice rising in panic somewhere upstairs. I got out. The front path was the same red brick it had always been, the same hydrangeas on either side that my mother replaced every spring without fail, the same brass door knocker shaped like a lion that I’d been too short to reach until I was nine years old. Everything exactly as it had always been. I rang the bell instead of using my key. That felt right. My mother opened the door before the sound had finished, which meant she’d been watching from somewhere near the window, and her face did something complicated when she saw me, a quick sequence of emotions moving through it to

  • The Substitute Bride Of The Blackwood    Chapter 51: Face to Face

POV: VictoriaI looked good. That was the first thing I confirmed when I checked my reflection in the mirror of my childhood bedroom that morning, the same mirror I’d stood in front of a thousand times before, and the assessment was honest rather than vain. I looked rested. Lighter than I had in years. The months away had done something to my face that no filter or carefully angled photograph could have manufactured, something genuine that sat in my eyes and the relaxed line of my shoulders and the way I held myself without thinking about who was watching.I was always thinking about who was watching.Except for the past eight months, when I hadn’t been, and the difference was visible even to me.I chose a simple dress, ivory, nothing that was trying too hard, and I left my phone on the bed without posting anything, which eight months ago would have felt like leaving the house without shoes. The story I told myself about why I’d left was the true one, mostly.I had been in love

  • The Substitute Bride Of The Blackwood    Chapter 50: The Call

POV: CharlotteI was still smiling when I picked up the phone. That was the thing I kept coming back to afterward. The notebook open in front of me, the story moving faster than it had in weeks, the memory of his hand finding mine at the breakfast table still warm somewhere in my chest, and I was smiling, genuinely, the kind of smile that lives on your face without you putting it there, and then my mother’s name appeared on the screen and I answered without thinking twice.“Charlotte.”Something in the way she said my name made the smile start to fade before she’d said anything else. Not the word itself. The weight behind it. The careful weight of someone who has been rehearsing how to say something and still hasn’t found the right way.“Mom,” I said. “What is it?”A pause.Too long for nothing. Too deliberate for something small.“Victoria’s back,” she said. The library went very still around me.I sat there with the phone against m

  • The Substitute Bride Of The Blackwood    Chapter 49: Finally

POV: CharlotteHe was still in my doorway.Phone silenced. Eyes on me. Whatever the alert had been, he’d made his decision about it without even glancing at the screen, and that small deliberate choice, choosing this over whatever Blackwood Empire needed from him right now, settled something in my chest before he’d even spoken again.“I need to tell you something,” he said. For the second time. Like saying it once hadn’t been enough, like he needed to hear himself commit to it before he could continue.“Okay,” I said.“This isn’t nothing.” His voice was low and certain. “What’s been happening between us. I’ve been telling myself I could keep it where it was, that it was manageable, and I can’t. I don’t want to.” A pause. “I’m done pretending otherwise.”The corridor was completely quiet around us.I looked at this man who had kissed me in a hallway without deciding to and then spent an entire day in the same house as me, close enough to touch, with

  • The Substitute Bride Of The Blackwood    Chapter 48: What This Is

POV: Damien I didn’t sleep. Not because of the kiss specifically, but because of what I did with it afterward, which was try to examine it the way I examined everything else, methodically, pulling it apart to find the clean line of cause and effect that usually made any situation manageable, and failing completely, which was not something I was accustomed to. I sat at my desk for an hour after I’d come upstairs, the same desk where I’d reviewed contracts that afternoon and I ran through what had happened in the corridor with the same discipline I applied to board decisions. It should have been simple. I had kissed Charlotte. An uncomplicated sentence, a statement of fact, and it should have remained one. Instead, by the following morning, it had become the single most difficult thing I’d tried to understand in years. I had spent thirty years operating on the principle that every action was a product of a choice, that impulse was something
