The Ashford mansion rose against the skyline like something from a different century all white stone, tall windows, and iron gates that opened without a sound. Elena sat in the back of the black car, hands clenched in her lap, watching the world she had known shrink into memory.

Her grandmother had been moved to a private hospital that morning. The best care, they promised. Elena had held the old woman’s hand until the nurses gently urged her to leave. The look in her grandmother’s eyes still burned behind her own.

“Welcome home,” Ashford Yulan said as the car stopped. Her voice was bright, almost girlish. The smile she wore looked freshly applied.

Inside, the air smelled of polished wood and expensive perfume. Servants in matching uniforms bowed as they passed. Elena’s worn sneakers squeaked against the marble floor. She felt every eye on her sizeing, comparing, finding her lacking.

Then a voice floated down the grand staircase.

“So the lost puppy finally arrived.”

Elena looked up.

The girl descending the stairs had her face. Exactly her face same eyes, same mouth, same curve of cheek. But everything else was different. Vivian’s hair was styled in soft waves that caught the light. Her dress was a cascade of pale silk. She moved with the easy confidence of someone who had never doubted her place in the world.

When Vivian reached the bottom, she stopped and studied Elena with open curiosity and something sharper underneath.

“You really do look like me,” Vivian said. “How unfortunate for you.”

Ashford Yulan laughed lightly, as if it were a joke. “Vivian, don’t be unkind. This is your sister.”

“Sister.” Vivian tasted the word. “I suppose. Though I’ve managed perfectly well without one.”

Elena said nothing. She stood in her simple clothes, feeling the weight of every difference between them. Vivian’s skin glowed with care. Elena’s hands still carried the faint scars of work. Vivian’s posture was straight and proud. Elena’s shoulders had learned to curve inward, as if trying to take up less space.

Ashford Weimin cleared his throat. “Elena will be staying with us from now on. She needs time to adjust. Vivian, I expect you to help her.”

Vivian’s smile was sweet and empty. “Of course, Father.”

Later, alone in the room they had given her a space larger than the entire house she had left behind Elena sat on the edge of the bed and stared at her reflection in the full-length mirror. The face looking back was identical to Vivian’s. Yet somehow it looked smaller. Quieter.

She touched her own cheek. The skin was the same. The eyes were the same. Why, then, did she feel like a poorly made copy?

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Ashford Yulan entered without waiting for permission, carrying a garment bag.

“I brought you some clothes,” she said, smiling that careful smile again. “You can’t keep wearing those old things. You’re an Ashford now.”

Elena accepted the bag. Inside were dresses that looked like they belonged to Vivian elegant, expensive, and entirely foreign to her body.

“Thank you,” she said.

Ashford Yulan’s hand lingered on her shoulder a moment too long. “We’re so glad you’re home, Elena. Truly. This family has waited a long time for you.”

The words should have warmed her. Instead they left a cold trail down her spine. When her mother left, the smile stayed fixed until the door closed. Only then did it fall away, like a mask no longer needed.

Elena sat back down on the bed, the garment bag heavy across her knees. Somewhere in this vast house, her twin sister was living the life that had been denied to her. And somewhere in a private hospital room, her grandmother was fighting to breathe.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember the sound of rain on a thin wooden roof. It already felt very far away.

  • The Substitute Bride Of Three   Meeting the Blackwood's

They entered the sitting room together, yet somehow each of them seemed to own their own kind of space.Adrian Blackwood came first. He moved with the quiet certainty of a man who had never needed to raise his voice to be obeyed. Dark hair, perfectly ordered, a face cut from sharp lines and controlled stillness. His eyes found Elena the moment he crossed the threshold and did not look away. There was no open warmth in that gaze, only a deep, assessing calm as if he were reading a document he already half-understood and was simply confirming the details. When he inclined his head, the gesture was polite, precise, and somehow heavier than a spoken greeting.“Vivian,” he said. The name left his mouth without hesitation, yet something in the way he watched her afterward made Elena’s skin tighten. For one brief second she had the unnerving sense that he was not looking at the performance at all, but at the girl underneath it.Sebastian followed a half-step behind, and the air in the room

  • The Substitute Bride Of Three   Beautiful prison

The Blackwood mansion rose against the evening sky like something carved from shadow and gold. From the road it looked almost soft tall windows glowing with warm light, white stone walls that seemed to drink the last of the sunset, iron gates that opened without a sound. Up close, however, the beauty became a kind of weight. Every perfect line, every polished surface, every carefully tended rose bush along the drive whispered the same quiet truth: this place was not built for comfort. It was built to impress, to intimidate, and to keep people exactly where they belonged.Elena sat in the back of the black car with her hands locked together in her lap. The diamond bracelet Ashford Yulan had fastened around her wrist earlier that afternoon felt colder than the night air. Her mother sat beside her, still smiling that usual soft, practiced smile that never quite reached her eyes. Ashford Weimin spoke in low, measured tones about alliances and first impressions, as if Elena were not three

They began the transformation the next morning.A woman with sharp eyes and sharper scissors arrived to restyle Elena’s hair. Another arrived with racks of clothes that smelled of new fabric and money. A third brought jewelry, makeup, and a binder thick with information about Vivian’s life her preferences, her public history, her way of speaking, even the small scar on her left knee from a childhood fall that Elena did not have.“Memorize everything,” Ashford Yulan instructed, her voice crisp now that the pretense of warmth had been set aside. “You will not get a second chance to make a first impression on the Blackwood family.”Elena sat still while they cut and curled and painted. In the mirror, her face slowly became someone else’s. The soft waves framed features that were no longer entirely her own. The lipstick made her mouth look bolder. The dress cinched her waist into a shape that felt borrowed. When they finished, Vivian herself came to inspect the result. She circled Elena s

  • The Substitute Bride Of Three   The prize of belonging

The truth arrived three days later, delivered with the same careful smiles that had brought her here. They called her into the study a room of dark wood and heavy books that smelled of old money. Ashford Weimin sat behind a large desk. Ashford Yulan stood beside him, hands folded neatly. Vivian lounged on a sofa near the window, scrolling through her phone as if the conversation barely concerned her.“There is something we need to discuss,” Ashford Weimin began.Elena stood in the center of the room, feeling small. “Is it about Grandmother? Is she worse?”“Your grandmother is stable,” Ashford Yulan said quickly. “The doctors are optimistic. That is not why we called you.”Ashford Weimin folded his hands. “You know we are a family of certain standing. Alliances matter. For years, an agreement has existed between the Ashford family and the Blackwood family. Your sister was to marry into the Blackwood family to seal that alliance.”Vivian looked up from her phone, expression bored. “I re

The knock came in the late afternoon, three measured raps against the worn wooden door.Elena wiped her hands on her apron and opened the door. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but the two people standing on the narrow porch looked untouched by it. The man wore a dark tailored coat that probably cost more than her grandmother’s entire medical debt. The woman beside him was slender, her hair perfectly styled, pearls gleaming at her throat. They looked like they had stepped out of a different world. For a moment, no one spoke. Then the woman’s eyes widened. She pressed a manicured hand to her mouth.“It’s really you,” she whispered.Elena’s fingers tightened on the doorframe. “I’m sorry… do I know you?”The man stepped forward. His voice was deep, cultured, and carefully gentle. “My name is Ashford Weimin. This is my wife, Ashford Yulan. We… we are your parents.”The words landed like stones in still water. Elena stared at them, waiting for the meaning to settle. Parents. The word felt
