Chapter 2

Author: Madam Fenghuo
I found more than dirty clothes when I entered Beth's room.

One entire wall was covered with trophies from dance competitions and research contests. Our parents had even placed a small plaque in front of each one.

Each plaque listed the date of Beth's win and how old she was.

A large family portrait hung among the trophies.

I wasn't in it.

On the day it was taken, my mother had taken Beth out early for hair and makeup. When they reached the car, she realized Beth had forgotten her hat.

I ran upstairs to get it.

By the time I came back down, they had already driven away.

When the photo came out, the father said, "It's okay. The family members don't recognize you. Taking a group photo now doesn't make sense. Wait until we get you acquainted with the family members, and then we'll take a photo together."

I averted my gaze and didn't look again.

The promise made by the father has not been fulfilled yet.

A notice about the family's firearm assignments for members who had come of age lay on the desk.

I still remembered the day we received ours.

My mother had accepted the letter and chosen both guns herself.

When she handed them over, Beth's was brand-new, with her name engraved on the barrel. She couldn't put it down.

My mother smiled and said, "I picked this one especially for you and had the gunsmith engrave your name on it."

When I looked down at mine, dried blood still stained the barrel. No one had even bothered to clean it.

My mother merely said, "There are no good guns left. All that's left is this one with blood on it. It might have been left by the previous owner. It's a bit dirty, but if you clean it up properly, it can still be used."

Later, when she sent a thank-you letter, only Beth's name appeared at the top.

I scrubbed the gun clean and packed it in my backpack.

I would take it to Milan as a reminder never to look back.

After gathering Beth's laundry, I went back to my room to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything. I left the old fountain pen she'd given me on the desk.

The certificates and trophies I'd packed away in a box could stay too.

I had forgotten nothing.

Only then did I sling my backpack over my shoulder and leave.

After dropping the laundry off, I called a car.

Right then, my mother sent a text. "Pay the cleaner. I'll reimburse you later.Remember to have a meal. "

I didn't reply. I switched off my phone and got into the car.

I didn't turn it on again until I was in the departure lounge.

A social media post popped up about another Moretti daughter who had been assigned to escort weapons shipments in Southeast Asia.

Before leaving, she had posted photos of the equipment her parents had prepared for her.

There were more than a dozen sets of specialized body armor alone.

I closed the post.

Beth had sent two messages.

"Monica, have you left yet? Let me know when you arrive."

"Stay safe."

I read them and didn't reply.

I switched off my phone again and boarded my flight to Milan.

Three hours later, I landed without incident. The Turner family's underboss had sent someone to meet me and help arrange my accommodations.

The man who met me stared at my lone backpack.

He blinked in surprise. "That's all you brought? It's fine. Everything you need is already waiting for you. Actually, you could have arrived empty-handed. You will have to take care of yourself in Milan, though."

I smiled without answering. I had taken care of myself all my life. I was used to it.

They put me in a villa on the outskirts of the city.

A private club nearby would be my first assignment. Running it would teach me how the Turner family operated.

I turned down the staff they had arranged because I preferred the quiet.

On the first morning, I made toast.

In the family group chat, Beth posted a photo of a healthy meal our mother had cooked for her.

A few days later, the unfamiliar climate left me bedridden with a cold.

More photos filled the group chat. Our parents were taking Beth to dinners and introducing her to socialites and politicians.

She was surrounded by people, and our parents' faces were full of pride.

No one asked whether I had made it to Milan.

No one asked where I was living or whether I had enough money.

No one asked if I was carrying a gun to protect myself.

That evening, the assistant assigned to help me learn the job came to the villa and found me pale, weak, and drenched in sweat.

She immediately called a private doctor.

My father stared at me in shock, his eyes red and glistening with tears. My mother's lips trembled. She rushed forward and grabbed my arm. "It really is you. They said they saw you at the market, but I thought they were mistaken. You really are here. Why didn't you call and tell us you were here? Do you have any idea how worried we were?"My father choked out the words. "We heard about the bloodshed in the Turner family. I sent people to find you, but no one could. We thought you were already... Monica, no matter how angry you were, you should have called us!"My father's voice broke, and he couldn't finish the sentence.I clenched my hands, pressed my lips together, and said nothing. My mother's eyes filled with tears. "Beth went to Milan to look for you! You're alive. That's all that matters."She nodded as if trying to reassure herself. There it was again. As long as I was alive, that was enough.I drew a breath. "I'm fine. Still alive."That was my entire reply. My father's eyes di

The art center Dante and I ran quickly found its footing, and soon the Turner family was routing its largest transactions through us.In less than six months, we controlled the heart of the Turner family's finances.Even cheap crafts could be turned into expensive, sought-after art once we manipulated the market. The auction house we controlled became somewhere high society fought to get into.Dante arranged a yacht and a fireworks display for my birthday to thank me.As fireworks lit up the sky, a deep calm settled over me.More than half the Turner family sent me birthday gifts. It wasn't until I came to Milan that I learned what it felt like to be surrounded by the warmth of a family.Back home, no matter the occasion, Beth had always been the one everyone noticed. When the celebration ended that night, I returned home.A parcel was waiting outside my door."Happy Birthday" was written on the wrapping. I recognized Beth's handwriting immediately. I didn't open it.I took it straight

When Beth saw me, her eyes were red with tears. My mother looked haggard, and I spotted several new gray hairs."Monica, we've been looking everywhere for you." Beth stepped forward to take my hand, but I moved out of reach."What are you two doing here?"My mother choked back a sob. "Why did you block us?""Why else could it be?"My voice was cold.My mother's face fell. She lowered her gaze, her eyes turning red.Beth said, "Monica, it took us so long to find you. We finally asked the family and found out you'd been assigned to guard the armory. We thought you'd been there this whole time, but when we went there, they told us you'd never even reported for duty."My mother continued, "You blocked us. If Beth hadn't seen your name connected to the Turner family, we might never have found you!""Exactly, Monica. Did something happen at the armory? Tell me, and I'll make whoever hurt you pay for it. No matter what happens, you can't block us!"Beth choked out the words as tears rolled do

I paused for a moment before answering. "I'm fine."Beth let out a relieved breath. Then her tone turned accusing."What's wrong with you? You blocked all of us. Are you angry? You haven't called home once. Do you know Dad sprained his ankle a few days ago?"I said nothing. How would I know?"No. Is there anything else?"My indifference clearly unsettled Beth. She sighed in frustration."That's all. You couldn't help with Dad's ankle anyway. Mom told me to contact you and make sure you were still alive."My breath caught. In their eyes, it was enough that I was alive. I was no more important than an object they simply needed to know still existed."Don't call me again. Not even if something happens."My voice was cold.Beth frowned. "Monica, has someone there been giving you a hard time? Who is it? Tell me."I gave a bitter laugh. They really couldn't see what they had done."Nobody is giving me a hard time.""Then why are you suddenly treating us this way?""Like what?""Blocking us.

It startled all three of them. They looked at one another.Beth pressed her lips together, sweat beading on her forehead. "Monica must have blocked me."Mom snatched the phone and stared at the screen in disbelief. The message had gone through, but there was no reply.Mom called out in a trembling voice, "Call her. Right now."Dad stood and pulled out his phone, his hand trembling as he dialed. The call rang twice before Monica rejected it.He tried again, but got the same result."She won't answer me. Use your phone and ask her what's going on." His voice was shaking now too.Mom did as he said. Her face had gone pale, but she took a breath and gathered her thoughts before calling. This time, the call didn't even ring. It went straight to voicemail.Mom panicked at first. Then she remembered her last conversation with Monica and slowly calmed down."We must have said something that upset her again. She'll sulk for a couple of days and get over it. She's always been like this, never as

A woman's voice came through the phone."Hello? Is this Monica Moretti, Beth's sister?"I frowned. "Who is this?""Beth was caught in a firefight while escorting a weapons shipment and was badly wounded. The doctors have stabilized her, but she's still in danger. She doesn't want us to call your parents and worry them, so she asked me to tell you."I froze. My heart sank at the news."How is she?" I demanded."She took two bullets to the shoulder. The wounds have been treated. She asked me to tell you she's fine and not to worry.""All right."I hung up.For a moment, I just stood there in the departure lounge, my mind blank.Beth had been badly wounded. But instead of telling our parents, she'd had someone call me.She wanted to keep them from worrying. Apparently, it didn't matter if I worried. It had always been like this. Whenever there was something difficult to deal with, I was the one she turned to.I struggled with the thought for a long time before calling back.Beth answered,
