Chapter 2

Author: Sunny Embrace
“You’re about to become the general manager’s wife. Isn’t that good enough?

“Nancy, don’t be so greedy.”

‘Greedy…’ I mulled over that word.

Then, I smiled with relief.

In the end, I made a call.

“I’ve already ordered the wedding dress.

“Harvey, you said before that you’d wait for me. Does that still stand?”

His response was quick and firm.

Just as I hung up, Michael walked in the door.

“Who were you talking to?”

“A coworker.”

Michael did not ask any further questions.

He walked straight to the bathroom, washed up, and then sat down beside me.

“I want to discuss something with you.

“I plan to let Joanne drive that new car for a while.

“I’ll take the car keys for now.”

His tone left no room for discussion. He was just informing me.

I closed my eyes briefly and said softly, “You said that was my wedding gift.”

“I’ll make it up to you later,” he said casually.

“She’s all alone with a child. It’s pitiful. Life’s really hard for her.

“You have me now. Don’t fight with her.”

Ever since Joanne returned home, Michael always described her as “pitiful.”

When she cut her finger, he called her pitiful and left me alone in the villa, even though I was running a high fever, just to go and see her.

When her son forgot his umbrella, he said he felt pity for him and left my father, who had been on a high-speed train for ten hours, at the station. He went to pick him up from kindergarten.

To him, the mother and son in question needed pity and understanding more than anyone else.

He always said that my father and I were used to a hard life, so enduring a little more would not make a difference.

“All right.” I nodded.

“Then, give it to her.”

I did not ask anything more and just lay down calmly.

This took Michael by surprise. He seemed to want to say something but ultimately kept quiet.

We remained silent and went to sleep. The next day was a workday.

Over the years, Michael had always been careful to avoid any display of affection with me at the company. No one knew about our relationship.

We usually arrived at the office one after the other. But today, we happened to run into each other in the parking garage.

“That new car must be what Mr. Spencer bought for his fiancee, right?”

“Goodness me, a Venz SL100. That starts at two million!”

“Look at the one next to it…”

A brand-new car worth two million stood side by side with my used car, which cost two hundred thousand.

A burst of laughter filled the parking garage.

It was only then that I realized Michael had already upgraded the car to the top-of-the-line model.

He originally gave me two hundred thousand, but it seemed he had set aside two million for Joanne.

I opened the car door without batting an eye and locked eyes with Michael.

He was helping Joanne out of the car. When he saw me, he looked away uneasily.

[Take a cab to work next time. Your car just doesn’t fit the company’s image.]

He sent me a private text.

I turned back and looked at the bloodstain on the driver’s seat that I had never been able to wash out.

It was left behind three years ago when I was in a car accident while rushing through a downpour to deliver an important document to Michael.

That night, I got seven stitches at the hospital. But the first thing I asked when I woke up was whether the contract had been affected.

With tears in his eyes, he hugged me and promised he would never let me suffer like that again in the future.

I no longer wanted to wait for his “future.”

I drafted a resignation letter and went to Michael’s office.

Before I could knock, I heard Joanne’s voice.

“Michael, why don’t you just give the wedding dress back to Nancy? I’m afraid she’ll get upset.”

“She won’t,” Michael whispered.

“She can’t tell the difference between what’s nice and what isn’t. Anything will do.

“As for you, to move past the shadows of the past, you need a fresh start.”

“Then, you’d better keep it a secret.” Joanne blinked innocently.

“Forget the wedding dress. If she finds out that the engagement ring you gave her was actually my old wedding ring…”

I staggered and stared in disbelief at my ring finger.

There was silence inside the room.

“That ring was just sitting there anyway. Rather than letting it constantly remind you of the past, it’s better to get rid of it once and for all. You don’t have to feel so miserable anymore,” said Michael softly, as if to comfort her.

“The setting and size have been completely remade. She won’t notice.

“Nancy’s always been obedient. If you give it to her, she’ll just cherish it as a treasure. She’ll never suspect a thing.”

A treasure…

The treasures I cherished were, once again, just trash that others did not want.

I chuckled bitterly. My heart was completely devoid of emotion. I knocked on the door.

“Mr. Spencer, I’m here to submit my resignation.

“Please approve it.”

With Harvey by my side, I finally felt at peace and gradually began to emerge from the shadows of the past. However, I never expected Michael to actually come back and seek me out. This time, he staked out the villa where Harvey and I were staying and waited at the front gate.“Nancy!”He rushed toward me, clutching a box tightly in his hand.“I finally found you!“I bought a new engagement ring to replace the old one, along with a wedding dress, a bouquet, and a wedding venue…”He looked utterly haggard. But his eyes were fixed intently on me as he said hoarsely, “The company’s debts have been paid off. I can start over from scratch, but this time, I won’t shortchange you in the slightest.“As for Joanne, I’ve cut all ties with her. She’ll never come between us again, and she certainly won’t hurt your dad.“Nancy…”As he spoke, tears streamed down his face.“Seven years… You’ve been by my side for seven years.“I lost my way once by accident, so please give me another ch

Michael stood in the chairman’s office. He was berated until his pride was left bloodied and battered. He never imagined that Nancy would pull such a move. He could not believe that she could be so ruthless.Overnight, he lost everything he had taken pride in.All of it had originally been built on her sacrifices and hard work. The housewife he had once regarded as dispensable was, in fact, the one who had made him who he was.But it was all too late.Michael returned home in a daze. Before he could even open the door, he heard his mother and Joanne talking.“Joanne, don’t worry. Now that that jinx is gone, Michael will definitely choose you.“Your child will be a member of the Spencer family. Then, you can have another one with Michael. It’ll be the best of both worlds.”Joanne gave her a shy smile and looked up to see Michael standing in the entryway.Unaware of what had happened, she walked up to him and said affectionately, “Michael, I was just talking to Mrs. Spencer ab

Michael called Nancy over a hundred times. But her phone was turned off. Not a single call went through. After rushing home from the wedding, he practically turned the house upside down, but he could not find any of Nancy’s things. She had taken everything with her, except for the wedding ring.“Sir, I was cleaning the yard this morning and found Ms. Norman’s ring.”The housekeeper handed it to Michael.“I swear I didn’t break it. The diamond had already fallen out when I picked it up…”Michael’s mind went blank for a moment. That was right. The ring had belonged to Joanne all along. He had treated Nancy like a dumping ground, fobbing her off with these secondhand trinkets. He had forgotten that, in all the years she had been by his side, Nancy had never once asked him for anything. The only thing she had ever wanted was a wedding. She had only wanted a simple, ordinary wedding. That was supposed to be proof of their love.He had destroyed it all with his own hands.Mich

Michael felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He frantically unlocked his phone. As screenshots of the marriage certificate flooded in from all directions, he panicked for the first time.“No! No…”He grabbed the nurse by the shoulders.“I’m Dan Norman’s son-in-law. Did you mistake me for someone else?”“Hey, there’s no way I could have gotten it wrong!” the nurse shouted back.“I took over this patient’s care yesterday. How could I have mixed him up?“His daughter’s name is Nancy Norman, and her husband’s last name is Sanders, I think. They sent a helicopter in the middle of the night yesterday to pick up her father. Everyone saw it!“They’re rich people. Who are you, some kind of lunatic? Why are you causing a scene in the hospital?!”Michael was kicked out of there. Meanwhile, his group of close friends began arriving one after another.“Michael, why are you just standing there like an idiot? Hurry and ask Nancy what’s going on!”“What’s the meaning behind the pos

The moment I received the call, my whole body shook. I practically bolted out the door and rushed frantically to the hospital. When I arrived, all I heard was that my father was still in intensive care and had not pulled through yet.“How could this happen…”My legs gave way as I collapsed to my knees. I said in a trembling voice, “My dad just had a heart bypass surgery…”I could not bear to think of how much he must be suffering!“It’s the building where your dad lives. He’s the only resident there. In fact, it fails the fire safety inspection every single year!“You should be more considerate as his child. How could you let your dad live in such a run-down, cramped old apartment?”I froze and looked at the stranger standing next to me. I had never met this woman before. My father lived in Harmony Residential Complex. What “run-down, cramped old apartment” was she talking about? That was the high-end house I bought for him as his retirement gift when he first moved to the cit

Michael visibly flinched. But after hearing what I said, his expression quickly darkened.“What did you say?“Why are you quitting?”“Ms. Norman!” Joanne’s eyes welled up with tears as she stepped in front of me.“Please don’t misunderstand. I’m just waiting here for my child.“Alex’s been sick these past few days. Michael took pity on us and was worried the food at the kindergarten wasn’t healthy, so he told him to come here for lunch.”I looked around.Children’s tableware was neatly arranged on the table. A pile of toys was scattered on the floor. A stack of children’s comic books was visible on the bookshelf.Michael used to be meticulous about cleanliness. He was the kind of person who would fly into a rage if even a smudge of ink from my hand accidentally touched his document folder. At this moment, his desk was covered in a child’s mischievous cartoon doodles, but he did not seem to care.Michael seemed to want to say something but held back.My heart had turned to
