Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Four years ago, my marriage to Adeline was the envy of everyone who knew us.

I was her attending physician. We fell in love during her treatment, and eventually, we built a life together.

But now, four years later, I'm nothing but bones in the ground—while Adeline has risen to become a world-renowned billionaire.

The woman who once loved me beyond reason now hates me with every fiber of her being.

I stared at her, this woman so different from the one I remembered, and felt utterly lost.

Was this really the woman I had loved all those years?

"Carrie!"

A sharp, anguished cry cut through the air from inside the car—it was my father. He had just watched the love of his life, his wife of decades, lying in a pool of blood. Grief overtook him, and he struggled to break free from the car, but his captors held him in place.

Adeline's face twisted into a sinister smile. Through the car window, she said in a low, cold voice, "Tell Samuel to come out right now and perform the surgery—or his mother won't make it."

My father seemed to collapse in on himself. He closed his eyes, and for a long moment, he was silent. When he finally spoke, his voice was raw and gravelly, as though he'd just made an impossible decision.

"I'll take you to Samuel. But you have to save his mother first."

Adeline let out a mocking laugh and gave a curt nod. "If you'd said that from the start, I wouldn't have had to go through all this trouble."

Following my father's directions, the cars wound through twisting back roads until they reached a desolate graveyard.

"There, Adeline. You wanted to see Samuel? He's right here."

My father's face was etched with deep, weary lines. After speaking those words, he seemed to drain of all strength, slumping forward and resting against my headstone.

My black-and-white photo stared back from the marker.

But Adeline just fixed her cold gaze on the tombstone, her eyes brimming with unmistakable disgust.

She lashed out without warning, slapping my father hard across the face.

"Samuel's little games are getting old," she spat. "He'll do anything to hurt Nicky, won't he? Anything to play the victim."

My father was old and frail. The blow sent him crumpling to the ground, unable to move. He lay there, his voice trembling as he forced out the words, "It really is Samuel. Samuel is dead."

Adeline's eyes blazed with fury. Through gritted teeth, she snarled at him, "Do you think this is funny? Keep playing these pathetic games with him, and I'll make sure you don't live to see another day.

"Don't forget—your wife is still in the ER fighting for her life."

Watching Adeline in that moment—so cold, so ruthless—I felt a chill of unfamiliarity. Was this the same woman I had given my heart to?

To force me out of hiding, she had put my parents through this kind of hell.

My father coughed up blood. He clutched his aching chest and spoke with a broken, sorrowful voice.

"Adeline... how could you do this to us? I used to think of you as a daughter."

"Enough!" Adeline roared, her hands balled into fists, her nails digging into her palms. "You don't get to say that! Where were you when I was dying?! It was all Samuel's fault... Blame him. Blame Samuel."

Her voice dripped with venom, and her eyes were consumed by an endless, burning hatred.

And my soul—caught in the crossfire—felt as though it were being scorched alive.

Guilt and shame consumed her from the inside out.Everything around her now screamed the same truth: her hatred, her revenge—it had all been a farce."So don't ever bother Samuel again, Adeline."Those few words drained whatever color remained in Adeline's face. She stood there for a long moment, then turned and walked away. One thing had always puzzled me.Why was Adeline so quick to believe Nicky? Why did she hate me so easily? But now I understood.Adeline was selfish. Adeline knelt before my sister, her face streaked with tears, her voice trembling with desperation. "Nellie... please, give me Samuel's remains. He loved me so much..."My sister glared down at her, unmoved. "Adeline, stop daydreaming. Samuel loved you—and what did he get in return?"He gave you his heart, and you repaid him with hatred. You murdered our parents. And now you have the nerve to crawl here and beg for forgiveness?"Adeline's face went even paler. She struggled to speak. "I was deceived...""So what? So that means we deserved to suffer for no reason? If I had any say in it, I'd wish my brother had never met you."My sister's eyes burned with fury as she watched the light slowly drain from Adeline's face.A bitter, satisfied smile curled on her lips. She pulled out the wedding announcement Adeline and Nicky had posted online and tossed it right in Adeline's face."Feels awful, doesn't it? Being betrayed by the one you love most."Take a good look at yourself, Adelin

Adeline couldn't believe it. The man she'd held in her heart for over a decade had just struck her—for another woman. She stood frozen, tears welling in her eyes."Nicky... you said you'd love me forever."Nicky let out a mocking laugh."Come on, you're not some naive little girl anymore. You actually bought that?"Adeline sank to the floor, looking up at him with dazed desperation."Nicky... what happened to my shares?"She stared at him, searching for any hint of a reasonable explanation. But Nicky just pulled the other woman closer, smug and triumphant."I did it all. I'm tired of playing pretend with you. It's exhausting.""Then what was all of this? What did your promises even mean?!" Adeline grabbed the hem of his shirt, pleading. "Nicky, I gave up everything for you! You can't do this to me—I'm your fiancee!""You were just a rich, gullible woman. There are plenty of those out there. And now? You're broke. You really think I'd still grovel at your feet? Try again in y

I watched Adeline with a bitter ache in my chest. At some point, I'd lost count of the moments I regretted my decision.Go ahead, Adeline. Dig. Find out the truth. She had just reached the parking lot and was catching her breath, about to get into her car, when a woman tapped her on the shoulder.Adeline turned, confused, and studied the woman's face—she looked vaguely familiar. Before Adeline could speak, the woman beamed and said, "You don't recognize me? I was a nurse in Dr. Samuel Newell's department! I've since quit, though."You know, Dr. Newell really loved you. He gave up his heart for you. Such a shame, really—his cancer could actually have been treated."With that, the woman's husband pulled up in their car, and she waved goodbye and left. But those few sentences had already sent Adeline's world into a tailspin. A few days later, Nicky had a medical episode and was rushed to the hospital.Adeline hovered over him, tending to his every need."Adeline, my condition is getting worse," he said weakly. "Does Samuel really not want to save me?"Watching Nicky put on this pathetic act, I felt nothing but disgust.Sure, his illness was rare—and there weren't many doctors in the country who could treat it besides me. But it was never this severe. He was just putting on a show, playing up his symptoms because he'd realized Adeline still couldn't fully let go of me.And it worked. Adeline's hatred for me burned even hotter. Her voice cracked with desperation as she said, "Don't worry, I will find Samuel. I swear it."For Nicky's sake, Adeline stormed into my mother's hospital room. After having my sister dumped at the hospital, Adeline returned to what used to be our home. The cozy little place where we'd spent three happy years together. My eyes landed on the wedding photo sitting on the cabinet, and I couldn't look away.I remembered every single detail of this house. Adeline and I had picked out everything together, piece by piece. The deed was in Adeline's name because she once told me she'd never had a home of her own. So I promised her—emotionally and financially—that I'd give her one.I could still see the look of surprise and joy on her face back then, as clear as if it were yesterday. Now, all I saw was coldness and hatred.Nicky was by her side this time.He looked at her and asked, "Are you still not over Samuel?"Adeline froze for a moment at his words. Then her eyes flickered with venom."Even if I can't forget him, it's only because I can't forget how he abandoned me when I was at my lowest, most desperate point. If I don't make him pay with
