Chapter 3

Author: Briar King
"I'm certain.

"Remove the engagement portrait from the entrance and replace it with a family photograph.

"Put my parents' names at the center of the honor table.

"I'll send you a short video for the ballroom screen. Please have your team prepare it."

That evening, I organized every transfer receipt I had saved.

I also downloaded the recording from dinner.

I had started recording when Mrs. Matthews suggested the numbered-envelope game.

I had only wanted a record of the wedding details in case I forgot something after we went home.

Instead, I had captured the exact moment my last hope in Derek disappeared.

Early the next morning, Paige posted on her social feed.

She named no one, but every word was aimed at me.

"Sometimes treating another family as your own only makes the future lady of the house uncomfortable.

"I crossed a boundary.

"From now on, I'll keep my distance so I never make things difficult for anyone again."

She attached a photograph of herself sitting by a window with reddened eyes.

The Matthews relatives crowded into the comments.

"Don't cry, Paige. Everyone knows what kind of person you are."

"Some women start acting like queens before the wedding. Imagine what she'll be like afterward."

"All this over two seats. How petty."

"Poor Derek. Imagine marrying someone that difficult."

I stared at the comments until my fingers slowly curled around the phone.

To them, my parents' dignity truly was nothing more than a fuss over two seats.

Derek messaged me soon afterward.

"Did you see Paige's post?

"You pushed her to this point. Are you satisfied now?"

I replied:

"You and your family made my parents cry too."

It took him a long time to answer.

"Can you stop using your parents to justify everything?

"The real problem that night was how impulsively you reacted.

"The invitations have already gone out. Canceling now will turn us into a public joke."

I read the messages and felt strangely calm.

It was not that he failed to understand.

He had simply never valued my pain, or my parents' humiliation, as highly as his own reputation.

I didn't respond again.

On the night before the wedding, Derek's messages gradually shifted from anger to reluctant compromise.

"Hannah, stop this.

"The invitations are out. We cannot simply cancel the wedding.

"I know you're still angry. After the ceremony, I'll have my mother apologize to your parents herself.

"We'll restore the original seating. Paige's parents will not be at the honor table.

"You've wanted this wedding for years. Don't ruin it just to prove a point."

His final messages arrived at two in the morning.

"I'll come for you as planned tomorrow.

"I know you'll be waiting."

I looked at those words and felt nothing.

He did not know I would wait. He was merely accustomed to keeping me waiting.

Waiting while he took care of Paige.

Waiting while he soothed his mother.

Waiting while he dealt with every person and problem he considered more important than me.

And when he finally returned, I was expected to invent excuses for his lateness, neglect, and favoritism.

This time, I would not wait.

I silenced my phone and slipped it into my bag.

Then I slept more soundly than I had in days.

The wedding morning dawned bright and clear.

Derek stood before a mirror in his tuxedo, a boutonniere pinned to his lapel.

His best man teased him from nearby.

"Still in the doghouse, Derek?

"Brides get emotional before the wedding.

"Once you reach her house, say the right things and she'll be fine."

Derek said nothing and looked down at his phone.

Hannah McGraw's profile picture sat silently above the unanswered conversation.

"If you hadn't encouraged me, would I ever have made that request?"Derek answered coldly."You were the one who asked."Paige shrieked back."And you were the one who agreed!"Their argument outside the hotel became humiliatingly loud.I didn't go out to watch. The anniversary dinner had begun. My parents sat together at the center of the honor table.I raised the first toast to them.It was not a wedding toast. It was a daughter's apology to the parents she had failed to protect.I stood before them with my glass raised, my hands shaking, unable to stop crying."Dad, Mom."I will never again let anyone humiliate you because of me."Mom rose and pulled me into her arms through her tears."Silly girl."You're home. That's all that matters."Dad lifted his glass and finished it in one swallow. Then he pressed an envelope into my hands. There was a check inside."This is the money we had set aside as your wedding gift."The wedding is gone, but the money is still you

Paige looked as if she had heard the most ridiculous thing in the world.Tears spilled down her face, but her voice sharpened."You're blaming me now, Derek?"When did I ever hold a knife to your throat?"When I said my stomach hurt, you could have stayed home."When I said I was upset, you could have ignored me."When I asked for the honor-table seats, you could have refused."But you came, you comforted me, and you agreed."She pointed at the screen and laughed through her tears."Now that Hannah doesn't want you, you're pushing all the blame onto me?"When you enjoyed being needed by me, why didn't you think I was crossing a line?"When you enjoyed your parents treating me like another daughter, why didn't you say I lacked boundaries?"When you enjoyed Hannah being understanding every single time, why didn't you care that she was hurting?"The ballroom erupted.Derek's expression turned livid.Mrs. Matthews panicked too."Paige, how can you speak to us like that?"P

He stared at me.I continued."If you had truly wanted to marry me, you would never have asked my parents to surrender their places at that dinner."And you would not have reached the hotel today before realizing that I had already stopped waiting for you."With every sentence, more color left his face."You don't love me."You simply cannot accept that the woman who was always reasonable, always waiting, and always giving you another chance has finally refused to cooperate."When the final words landed, his whole body swayed.I picked up the microphone. The screen changed at once. The recording from the family dinner began to play.Mrs. Matthews's voice came first."The person who draws the highest number can ask one small favor of whoever draws the lowest."Then came Paige's half-playful laugh."Derek, let me choose your request for you."At the wedding, my parents should sit at the honor table."Derek's head jerked up.The recording continued."It's only two seats.

"Today's gathering is not a wedding."It is a daughter's overdue expression of gratitude."She thanks her parents for thirty years of standing beside each other, and for telling her, when she was hurting most, that if she did not want to marry, she could always come home."Derek's knees nearly gave way.Mrs. Matthews, however, had already lost control. She shoved past the staff and stormed into the ballroom."Hannah!"Get out here!"The ballroom fell silent.I was standing beside the honor table, raising a glass to my parents. At the sound of her voice, I slowly turned.Derek stood in the doorway. He wore his groom's tuxedo with a boutonniere pinned over his heart.I had spent three hours helping him choose that suit.Back then, I had stood behind him in the mirror with my heart racing.I had thought, This is the man I am going to marry. Now, looking at him again, I felt nothing but calm.Mrs. Matthews rushed up and pointed at me."Hannah, this is outrageous!"Why did

Derek stood at the hotel entrance as if his feet had been nailed to the floor. The smile vanished from his best man's face.Mrs. Matthews drew a sharp breath."What is this?"What is this supposed to be?"She stormed inside and grabbed the nearest staff member by the arm."You made a mistake, didn't you?"This is supposed to be Derek Matthews and Hannah McGraw's wedding!"The employee flinched but remained professional."Ma'am, Ms. McGraw confirmed three days ago that the wedding program was canceled and the dinner was being converted into an anniversary celebration."The decorations, menu, and ballroom presentation all follow Ms. McGraw's final approved plan."Derek's head snapped up.Three days ago.Hannah had truly canceled the wedding three days earlier. It had not been an angry threat. She genuinely no longer wanted him.Derek's face went deathly pale.He remembered the message he had sent at two that morning."I'll come for you as planned tomorrow."I know you'
