The morning came too quickly, almost as if the night had lost its power.

Rosa hadn’t slept a wink. She'd spent the night watching her aunt's chest rise and fall in a steady pace.

Aunt Nardine had fallen asleep, murmuring prayers under her breath, but Rosa’s mind refused to rest.

Did she do the right thing?

Then, thoughts of bills, eviction notices, job applications that went nowhere and her aunt's medical bills flashed across her mind.

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

Even if she didn't, she wouldn't blame herself.

By dawn, her mind, soul and body was fully prepared for the tides of new beginnings she was about to venture into…or at least, she thought.

When Alexander’s car pulled up outside at 8 a.m sharp, she was already dressed and prepared . She wore a plain pink blouse and black cottage skirt, dragging her box with firm but doubtful hands.

Calm down Rosa.

Her aunt followed her to the door and Rosa could see she still wished she could change her mind at the last minute.

“Are you sure about this?”

Rosa nodded, trying to be confident.

“It’s just a year, Auntie. I’ll be okay.”

Just a year. That sounded odd.

“You’re walking into another man’s world, Rosa,” Nardine warned softly. “Don’t lose yourself there.”

Rosa hugged her tightly. “I won’t.”

And then she stepped outside, closing the door on everything familiar….and home.

The car ride was silent, except for the hum of the engine. Alexander sat beside her in the back seat, scrolling through his phone, his expression unfathomable as usual.

Rosa would occasionally steal glances at him, admiring his chiseled features and the man was aware but didn't say a word, allowing the girl feast on her eyes.

Rosa wanted to say something, anything, but her courage flickered and died each time she looked at him.

What is wrong with you, Rosa!?

She heaved a sigh as she looked away, unable to fuel her courage. He looked too calm for a man about to enter a fake marriage. Wasn't he bothered that something could go wrong?

And he was too composed for someone whose car had nearly killed her a week ago.

Who even got into a marriage with someone who ran them over!?

Rosa Hamon.

She pinched her forehead as she closed her eyes. How did her life turn out like this?

After a while, he spoke without looking up.

“You are feeling okay, right?”

Rosa nodded, clutching her bag. “Yes”.

Did he really care?

He finally looked at her as he lifted his head. A single glance, sharp enough to make her heart skip a beat. Why did it always do that!

“Good. I’ve gotten the legal team to finalize it yesterday. You’ll be moving into my residence immediately, as you are already aware “.

She swallowed.

“Appearances matter. And time isn’t on our side”. He explained as if trying to justify himself.

She exhaled softly and turned back to the window, watching the city fade into hills and gated estates. The buildings grew fewer and the sounds from the hustle and bustle of the city faded away.

When the car finally stopped, Rosa’s breath hitched.

The mansion that stood before her was grand and sprawling, built from pale stone and framed by iron gates. The morning sun caught on its tall glass windows, reflecting its rays in a colourful golden pattern.

It was almost…like a palace. Everything about it screamed wealth, dominance and power.

She stepped out slowly, her sandals crunching on the gravel driveway.

“You live here alone?” she asked curiously.

Alexander’s gaze followed hers.

“I prefer silence and tranquility”.

That, she could believe. The place looked like it hadn’t heard laughter in years…. a bit bleak ..

The front doors opened, and a woman in her forties approached . Tall, polished, with the kind of posture that came from decades of serving people who expected perfection.

Rosa breathed in. Okay. This was really overwhelming.

“Good morning, Mr. Wade,” she greeted. “And you must be Miss Hamon.”

Her eyes went fleetingly to the wide eyed girl, who stared around like a baby marveling at the sight of humans.

“Mrs. Dill”, Alexander said.

“She’ll be staying here. Make sure she’s settled.”

The woman nodded respectfully. “Of course, sir.”

Rosa offered a nervous smile. “Thank you.”

Alexander who was about to start up the marble staircase to head to his room, paused halfway and turned back.

“Rosa.”

She looked up at him. “Yes?”

His eyes stayed on hers and he could see the innocence in them. His lips twitched.

“Starting today,” he said quietly, “it’s Mrs. Wade.”

Her heart skipped several beats, but she nodded.

Mrs. Dill showed her through the mansion, room after room, each more beautiful and intimidating than the last.

It was so magnetic and intricate at the same time.

The living room alone was the size of Aunt Nardine's entire house and there would still be some space left. The Chandeliers glimmered overhead, polished floors reflected everything, and tall windows overlooked acres of green lawns.

Her heart melted at the view of the lush field from the mansion's royal looking windows. It was breathtaking.

Her assigned room was upstairs. Soft cream colored walls, a king-sized bed and even fresh flowers on the table. It looked so beautiful and Rosa couldn't believe she would ever sleep in a room like this in her entire life.

“If you need anything, ring the bell near the bed,” Mrs. Dill said with a polite smile.

“Lunch is at one, dinner at seven. Mr. Wade prefers punctuality.”

“I’ll remember that,” Rosa murmured, her eyes still taking in the view of the room.

As the woman walked out, she casted one more glance at the girl before shutting the door close. Her brows creased as she walked away. There was something…. familiar about her. Too familiar. But, she couldn't just say what it was.

Rosa sat in Alexander's study staring at nothing.Old photos of her mother were edited into grotesque collages online, demeaning her dignity. Anonymous accounts dissected her smiles, her posture, the way she leaned into Alexander in public. Everything became evidence. Everything became ugly. Even a little raise of a brow on why the clouds were about to rain, seemed to be some suspicious movement.“Maybe she's thinking of how to twist him further.”Only a few, though, sympathized with her.“Her mother was a mistress. Yeah, and so what? Isn't she human?”“Most of us judging her, have done worse.”“If she's a gold digger, I don't blame her. I would do the same if I were in her shoes.”“Honey, life can be hard, okay? Leave Rosa the hell alone!”“How are we sure this news is even true?”And just these few words, were able to give Rosa hope. She sat in the study, the curtains drawn, the room dim despite the day outside. The study smelled faintly of leather and old books. She had chosen it

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 71: Across The Media

Susan Wade did not sleep that night. She sat in her room long after the house had gone quiet, everyone had retired to their bed. Her reflection stared back at her from her vintage mirror.Pain had knocked her harshly earlier. But now the pain had hardened. She reached for her phone. There were many ways to destroy a person, she knew that. She had built a reputation, understanding exactly where pressure fractured bone and reputation alike. Money could silence, accidents could happen. But public opinion… public opinion was a wildfire. And Rosa Hamon had a name that burned beautifully. She would never refer to her as Rosa Wade, over her dead body. She dialed a number she rarely used.“Good evening, Mrs. Wade,” the voice answered smoothly.“I want a story out by morning,” Susan said without beating around the bush. “Not rumors. These are verified facts, clean enough to look accidental.”There was a pause. “About?”“Emilia Cole,” Susan replied, her voice clipped. “Former worker of the Wade

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 70: History Won't Repeat Itself

Susan Wade had always believed pain announced itself. That it arrived with screams, with breaking glass, with bodies collapsing under the revelation. She had not expected it to come quietly, wrapped in a name typed neatly on a private investigator’s report.Emilia Cole. The name sat inside her like a stabbed blade.Susan stood alone in her bedroom, the door locked and the curtains drawn despite the late morning sun. The house buzzed faintly outside, with whispers and footsteps and the aftershocks of chaos, but in here, everything was still. She clenched her fists.Emilia Cole. That bitch! She gritted her teeth. She had read the name a hundred times since dawn, hoping it would blur into meaninglessness, hoping exhaustion would turn it into ink without memory. But it only grew heavier and more realistic. A wound that refused to close.Susan inhaled deeply, her chest tightening as something old and ugly clawed its way back to life. Not her, anyone but her.She squeezed her eyes shut, as

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 69: A Losing Game

Rosa lay on her bed, crying until her eyes burned. Why did these things keep happening to her? Just when she thought she had finally found peace, trouble struck again. What hurt the most was Alexander’s reaction. She understood his internal battle, she truly did, but she had hoped it wouldn’t touch them. She loved him too much. She couldn’t bear to lose this.Coughing, she pushed herself up and grabbed the glass of water from her nightstand, gulping it down. The ache in her chest refused to ease. Then his mother’s words echoed mercilessly in her head.“Her mother was your father’s mistress!”Rosa’s grip tightened around the glass. That wasn’t possible. Her mother would never have done that. And yet, somewhere in the back of her mind, a small, traitorous voice whispered… ‘What if?’Because the truth was, Rosa never really knew what her mother did for a living. She remembered the later years, the poverty, the way her mother would stare into nothingness, sometimes crying, warning Rosa ab

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 68: Slap in the Face

Rosa stared dumbstruck at his mother's spiteful words. What?!“Ma’am please. I know you don't like me, but bringing my late mom into this is too far.”She could at least honor the dead.Mrs. Wade's eyes went to her sharply and then she broke into a cold humorless laugh. Rosa and Alexander exchanged looks before facing her again.“Look at this fool. You think I would stoop so low as to try and use your slut mother just to prove a point?”Rosa's jaw clenched and her gaze on the woman hardened.Susan chuckled, walking closer to Rosa, who stood her ground. Their eyes met in an unwavering bicker.“Or are you going to deny..” Susan continued, “that Emilia Cole was your mother?”Rosa's eyes widened. She knew her mother?! Her lips parted to speak but then it closed reluctantly.Alexander immediately pulled Rosa to him, protecting her from his mother.“Mom, please. It's too early for your shenanigans.”His mother smirked and looked over to Mrs. Dill whose face instantly paled.“You think I'm m

  • The Temporary Mrs. Wade   CHAPTER 67: What?!

A few hours earlier…..Susan sat in her bathtub, enjoying the tranquility and warmth of the water. She tilted her head slightly to one side, a dull ache settling in.“Oh dear. Not getting young again, I guess,” she chuckled dryly. Her lips thinned when her phone suddenly rang. She sighed. Who would be calling her at three in the morning?Standing up, not bothering to wipe the water from her body, she walked to the nightstand and checked the caller ID. Her eyes widened slightly before she immediately swiped to answer.“Hello?”“It didn’t work!” Daphne yelled from the other end, and Susan felt the urge to roll her eyes.“Calm down, Daphne. It hasn’t been long since you came. Be patient.”“Be patient? Until they fall more for each other?!”Susan sighed. “Calm down. Alexander is not that easy,” she clicked her tongue. That was usually a good attribute, just not in this case.“Look, Daphne. You know why I reached out to you first. Deep down, I know he never stopped loving you.”Daphne sco
