Chapter 10

Author: No Questions Asked
Wendy certainly did not dare to argue now that Ted was suddenly a savage brute—all she could hope for was to get this over with, and then destroy him later.

Along the way home, neither she nor Dean dared to say a word, as in their minds, Ted had truly lost his mind.

Forget assaulting them—would a normal person make a man, who had his face burned and suffered a fractured arm, drive? Who would ever dare?

But Ted did.

Luckily for them, the journey was peaceful, and once they reached Lake Garden Villas, Wendy turned to Ted and snarled through her teeth, "Go! Look for your crap, and leave immediately!"

As they went in, Wendy was told that Thomas was not home, having gone fishing with some old friends.

It left her absolutely furious, and she promptly called Thomas, telling him that their son had almost been murdered.

Ted did not care, as he went to the storeroom to get a box that was covered in dust.

It was obvious that it had been so long since anyone had touched it, but it made sense, as no one was bored enough to mess around with something they saw as horrid sketches.

As Ted took everything out of the box, he looked through everything.

Looking at it over his back, Wendy realized why he wanted these back—the paintings were mostly of Luna, and there was also literature like love poems!

Feeling victorious, she laughed coldly at Ted. "Trying to reminisce about the past, Ted York? Shame. This crap could have tricked my daughter back then, but you'd be just lying to yourself now. And did you think I'd let you take these paintings of my daughter? What if you sell them, and my daughter's reputation is ruined?"

Ted, however, was simply counting everything.

Seven notebooks and six paintings—nothing was missing.

Still, he retorted coolly at Wendy, "Don't worry, I'm not taking these with me."

"What?"

Wendy laughed even more coolly. "You're not taking them? Then why come all the way here? Oh, did you want to remind us that you worked hard back then and try to change my daughter's mind? Dream on!"

Ted ignored her this time as he put everything back inside the box and whipped out a lighter to burn them all together.

The small blaze illuminated Ted's face, but there was no emotion on it.

However, he knew that once these works were reduced to ashes, memories of him and Luna—the good and the bad—would also die with it.

On the other hand, Wendy was certainly not content with dissing Ted so little.

Watching as Ted was being so dramatic, she was laughing again. "You could've just told me if you wanted to burn it all! Why even bother coming back with us? Hell, I'd just throw them away—it's occupying precious space in my house, and no one's going to want them even if I sell them as scraps.

"Well, if you're just being dramatic for my benefit, you're just wasting your time. You could burn something more valuable than that to show us your determination."

Despite her disparaging Ted's works repeatedly, Ted never responded as he simply waited until the box was burned to ashes.

Then, he finally stood up and leveled a scornful look at Wendy as he started to leave. "Ignorant and foolish. Only gold has value, or perhaps that's what you'd like to think. Heh…"

That look almost gave Wendy a stroke, as she absolutely loathed it.

In the end, she had never been rich.

It was only after Luna married Ted that she did not have to worry about the bare necessities, and she was only rich after Luna carved a successful career for herself.

But even though she was rich now, her knowledge and vision never improved, which subjected her to much scorn from others, who gave her that same scornful look that Ted did.

As such, she started ranting, letting loose all her frustration on Ted. "Who are you calling ignorant?! You don't get to call me that! You're just a loser leeching off my daughter! What, do you think you're some master artist? How much do you think your work is worth?! It's all crap! I could draw better than you if I like! And you just got dumped! Loser!"

Still, all Ted had to do to silence her was turn and level a cool, silent look at her, leaving her stumbling backward.

In the end, all she was was a bully.

When Ted never fought back, she treated him like trash.

When Ted did fight back and dispense on civility, her face certainly hurt from his slap.

Dean tugged on Wendy's arm then, whispering, "It's alright, Mom. We don't have to win everything… just wait until he's gone."

Wendy nodded, and they both watched as Ted left without another word.

When Ted was utterly gone from sight, however, Dean and Wendy were once again themselves, their faces contorted horrifically.

Dean especially had been holding back for too long, and his agony seemed to overwhelm him all at once.

But even as he rolled around in pain, he was more concerned about his face. "A-Am I going to be disfigured…? Mom!!! I don't care anymore—don't you stop me! I'll kill him! I'll kill him!!! Argh!! Just look at my hand! It hurts so much!!!"

Wendy grimaced in pain even as she rushed to her son, and growled through her teeth, "Don't worry—your face will definitely be fine! And you don't have to tell me twice… I'll destroy that prick too! How dare he do this to you! How dare he slap me! I'll kill him!

"Just wait here—I've already called an ambulance, and they'll pick you up soon. That suits us just fine, since I was wondering when I could talk to your sister. We'll see how she's going to weasel her way out of this now!"

As it was with every undertaking, there was always a catch—when Wendy was wondering how she should get more goodies from Luna and even land a job for Dean, she was worried that she would be caught demanding Ted's alimony.

But now that Ted had slapped Wendy, his own mother-in-law, and beat Dean to a pulp, they suddenly looked like the victims here, the seriousness of their injuries notwithstanding.

Luna, defending Ted at this point?! No chance!

Delight showed on Dean's face right then, and his body suddenly did not hurt so much. "Then call Luna already! She'd definitely agree to anything we ask for!"

Wendy simply laughed. "Calm down. Let's stay in the hospital for a while and get everything bandaged. I'll then tell the doctor to make things sound more serious when he tells your sister, while we corroborate our stories so that it'd work more in our favor.

"Either way, there's nothing to worry about—I'll get you all the goodies this time! It's Luna's own fault for being such an ingrate, refusing to give her own family jobs in Lunacorp. What does she want? To remarry, have a child, and then give them all her money? Dream on! I'll be the first to have something to say about that!"

Was that really something a mother should say?

However, Wendy did say it, and as if it was perfectly natural.

Dean smiled at his mother in turn. "Mom, do you remember that young man at that villa? The one who was tied up by his own father? Well, I gave him my number, and since they now know that Luna divorced Ted, they'd definitely want payback too. Hmph! The more the merrier as they say… I'll make Ted wish he was dead!"

Wendy sighed and clapped Dean on the shoulder. "Don't worry. We'll definitely get our revenge."

That was when Thomas and the ambulance arrived.

Wendy made sure to shoot Thomas a vicious glare before getting into the ambulance with Dean.

Terrified, Thomas promptly called Luna.

He had no idea what had happened either, but with his wife and son so thoroughly hurt, the only one he could think of was his own daughter.

When Luna got his call, she promptly turned pale and ran out of the conference room.

There was no helping it—if it was Wendy or Dean, she would presume that they were exaggerating.

On the other hand, if it was Thomas, it made things that much more believable.

The moment Luna left such an important meeting and ran out of the conference room, Josie knew it was something serious, or Luna would not have lost her composure like that.As Luna's best friend and assistant, she followed Luna right away. "What happened, Ms. Lambert?"They were still at the office, so Josie stuck with Luna's formal title, or it would be unruly.Luna turned to Josie, flustered. "My dad just called, saying that my mom and Dean are hurt—Dean even has a broken arm and had his face disfigured. And you know my dad isn't like my mom… He wouldn't say something like that unless he saw it with his own eyes."Josie was stunned—she did not expect it to be that bad."Alright, I'll drive you to the hospital. Don't worry—we'll soon be there, and we'll find out what happened. That said, how did this happen? Weren't they just fine this morning? Why were they attacked? Did they upset someone?"Luna shook her head. "I don't know, but probably not… Don't you know Dean? He's obnoxio

Luna smiled sweetly, convinced that Jimmy loved her too.Still, she was not confident around him, and her usual lofty girlboss demeanor vaporized around him.And seeing Luna just then, there was a flicker of jealousy in Josie's eyes, though she stayed indifferent and said, "If you need an excuse to go to Eastport, I actually have one. Adam White's family will be celebrating his birthday soon, and as Lunacorp has received plenty of help from the White family, isn't this the perfect opportunity?"Moreover, considering the connection between the Cash family and the White family, Mr. Cash would definitely attend it. Then you have every reason to meet up, don't you?"As Luna's assistant, Josie was better informed than Luna on occasion. Moreover, there were many things that Josie would sieve through before bringing to Luna's attention."Adam White is celebrating his birthday?!" Luna quickly exclaimed. "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Josie? This is serious—I would attend it even if Mr. C

Luna said coolly, "Don't worry, Mom. I'll definitely help you on this and make Ted pay."Wendy nodded but soon gritted her teeth. "Luna, I heard that you gave him a lot of money when you divorced him? You shouldn't have—he's an ingrate, so take back everything from him. Don't give him a single cent, so that he'd have to beg for alms on the streets."As Wendy finished, she turned, her eyes fixed on Luna.To be honest, she was actually worried that Luna would say yes.If she did, the plot she and Dean hatched together would be exposed, and she was not about to say that out loud.Nonetheless, Luna frowned. "The money's nothing, Mom—it at least ensures that I can have peace after the divorce, and it's the best thing to do. Don't worry… I know what I'm going to do about him, but he can keep the money. Otherwise, we'd get more than what we bargained for if we mess up my plans."Though Wendy was inwardly relieved, she made an angry face and snapped, "Easy for you to say! That's not a sm

As Ted left to visit the Grahams, Luna had Josie contact Panther, personally inviting him to dinner.Panther was a crime lord with hundreds of henchmen and his fingers in every pie. Still, one could already imagine what he was since he was from the underbelly of Melville.Josie was surprised that Luna was still sending Panther despite knowing it was Ted—in fact, she was ready to cripple or kill him.Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, as they say.-Meanwhile, Ted was still unaware that Luna was sending a crime lord after him, or he would be laughing at himself otherwise. However, he was not going to be afraid. Forget a Melville crime lord—he had dealt with Easton's Three Giants too, and there was no telling who feared who in a confrontation.Still, just before Ted arrived at the Grahams' place, they were having a tense moment.Ever since John retrieved Lucas from Ted's, he was fidgeting endlessly with insecurity. He thought that personally visiting Ted with Lucas bound a

Even if he could threaten Ted, could he threaten his own father? That would be suicide! That was when John glared viciously at Lucas. "You wretch! Kneel and apologize to Mr. York this instant!"Then, he was smiling as he turned back toward Ted. "He really doesn't know what's good for him, having the balls to mess with you. I'll definitely punish him severely for this."Ted glanced coldly at John, however. "Oh, is that so? Most people shouldn't be aware who I really am—is it not with your instructions that he managed to find me?"His words left

It was not as if feelings could not be faked. That was especially true with a man like John Graham. One could already imagine his methods, considering his present standing in the world—putting on a show was basically second nature for him.But Ted knew that these were John's true feelings—on this matter, at least. He really loved his wife and was genuinely in pain for her.And that was really rare for a man. While Ted did not have the full picture of John's circumstances, he had done some homework and knew certain things. In Melville, there were all sorts of rumors about John. Some said that he was cold and callous, while others called him vicious, and then there were those who claimed that he was charitable. But amid all those rumors, there were none that had ever accused John of being a philanderer, let alone being disloyal to his marriage.Still, it was not because they were reluctant—they simply had no opening to do so, as everyone could see how much John and his wife loved

John was not really doubting Ted, thinking that he was just coming up with some excuse to deny his wife treatment. He was simply anxious, and just waiting another day was grilling for him.Still, Ted frowned slightly as he glanced at John. "I know how you feel, but this can't be rushed."Also, I've said I'll save your wife, and I will. Here's a prescription—have your people obtain every herb and ingredient as listed, while every procedure and heat level must be followed to the letter. In three days, your wife's condition will be stable, so you could send her to Eastport."It's the ideal option as it would increase our chance of success. A week of conditioning would heal her enough to endure the toll of travel, allowing her body to slowly recover."John's tears were overflowing once more when he heard Ted. He had no idea if the golden needles would work, but he knew that Ted's promise to stabilize her was something that everyone else could not do.There was certainly nothing mo

As a bigwig in Melville, even if he was free from scandals himself, John just needed to say the word to gather some ladies with clean backgrounds and a good head on their shoulders. In less than thirty minutes, John was personally reviewing several pretty faces in his own house—from scholars to socialites and relatives, there was quite the wide variety. However, none of them had anything to do with anything messy, as even their families were clean. As John would be asking them to curry Ted's favor, he would not do anything dumb to get anyone unruly. While the ladies had no idea why John had asked for them, it was clearly nothing bad, since John's virtuous reputation vouched for him.If it were Lucas, however, they would be turning pale by now.Still, John soon said. "The rest of you can go. Winter, you're staying."The lady named Winter was around five feet seven, with fair skin and a voluptuous figure, and she sported a pair of glasses. She had the looks, was diligent, and had

Pantera smiled. He had been worried Ted would conceal the identity of this woman who had dumped him, only for this Panther of Melville to come running in and mention her out of the blue.It was a huge coincidence, but Pantera frowned at Panther's rude entrance without a knock. He stayed quiet, since Panther was supposedly Ted's friend, and waited to see how Ted reacted—even though Panther didn't really look like a friend.Wolfie, meanwhile, rolled his eyes and glared at Panther like he was an idiot. He knew a bit of the state of Easton's underworld and had more or less heard of Panther. He was at best a little infamous and didn't bolster much strength… to put it harshly, Mr. Zarkonnen and the others really didn't care about him.And while Wolfie wouldn't have cared what Panther did to Ted before, things were different now.As such, both Wolfie and Pantera stayed silent, waiting to see what Ted would do.That was when Ted frowned at Panther and asked quietly, "Panther, you say?

Ted York, the former Quill family heir, also known as Theodore the Magnificent, King of the Celestial Throne, the Forsaken Emperor whose name shook the world, and the Tenth Monarch whose existence left the world breathless, was divorced? And dumped? Was that even remotely possible? The woman had to be crazy to do that.Beyond others, the countless women who admired Ted York would've all gone crazy for him.Even Wolfie, who had been silent as he stood nearby, could see that Pantera was skeptical.Pantera aside, he himself was left to wonder. He naturally knew about Ted's divorce but didn't have all the details. While he thought nothing of it before, having been around Ted and seeing the things happening around him left him questioning if Luna Lambert was really worthy of Ted.Finding a man like Ted was nothing less than a miracle against all odds, yet Luna dumped him, just like that? She had to be deranged…Nonetheless, Ted, smiling, asked quietly, "When have I ever joked about

Meanwhile, Panther put away his phone and looked up at the sign that said 'Charity Hearts', hesitant if he should barge in to capture Ted York or wait outside. He couldn't make a scene, not in Eastport—Luna notwithstanding, he himself was reluctant, as things could go bad if his presence there became known.Checking the time, he mused to himself for a moment before turning to his henchmen. "Do you think we should wait or go in?"Naturally, we have to be quiet even if we are grabbing him. Ideally, we should force Ted to come quietly so that no one notices."Panther's henchmen were left scowling at his question. How were they supposed to respond? Why were there so many restrictions when they were supposed to just grab one man?Sure, there were pros to going in, but that was only if Ted came quietly with them. One of them said, "If it were up to me, we should go in. Luna continued, "Moran Group has a strong influence in Easton, the family is not to be underestimated. Most importantly, they are a client we got with our own efforts, and that makes them our contact. If we want respect, we need to accomplish something on our own instead of relying constantly on others' connections."Josie nodded quietly, though she appeared hesitant. "Do we really have to? He's nothing good, and he was already lusting after you the first time. It'd be dangerous if we went straight into his turf."Leslie Moran's entire appearance was inherently sleazy—fiftyish, balding, and fat-bellied—but the man was somehow even sleazier than he looked. The prior breakdown of negotiations stemmed from Leslie's solicitation of sexual favors, including engaging in overtly frisky and vulgar conduct at the table.Just remembering it left Josie sick, as she had been molested herself. While Luna had the White family's protection, Leslie didn't know that, revealing his true nature.H

Upon Panther's arrival at Easton, Luna and Josie, having departed earlier, naturally arrived as well. However, they were still in Luna's car, and Josie promptly put Panther's call on speaker so Luna could hear everything.Orphanage? Orphans? Spending the whole morning playing?Luna was perplexed—did Ted lose his mind? Did he really think she wouldn't find him?And instead of fleeing, he ran off to be charitable? Did he truly have nothing better to do? Or perhaps he was hoping to build good karma?Still, she remained indifferent to Ted's true thoughts and promptly told Panther, "Just do as I said before. I don't care what you do as long as you grab and restrain him."Panther promptly nodded. "Alright, Ms. Lambert! Don't worry, I know what to do. It might take some time since you told us not to cause a scene, and this restaurant—Charity Hearts, is a little important, so we have to be smart about this. But don't worry, it will be done in an hour."Luna cared little about the proces

Would anyone believe it even if they were told? Naturally, there was a chance that it was true, but how important did the family have to be to actually disrespect someone like Pantera? And while Pantera knew nothing about Ted's personal life, Wolfie did all too well. The man wasn't just married—he was divorced, and to add insult to injury, he was labeled a loser and the one who got dumped. To Wolfie, it still felt like a dream. On top of that, he was interested to see how Luna Lambert would react upon discovering this. After all, the ex-husband whom she had deemed a loser turned out to be the former heir of the Quill family, a prominent guest of the White family, Viper Scorch's friend, and now, Pantera Medlar's esteemed boss.Still, it would most likely feel like a lottery winner who lost their ticket—they'd be wishing they were dead.On the other hand, Pantera's question left Ted in silence.Should he lie? When Ted York started laughing, Wolfie should have done the same, as should anyone given the opportunity to be acknowledged by a member of the Celestial Throne. But now, he didn't think of it that way. Haha! When did the Celestial Throne change its policy?"Pantera merely chuckled and eyed Wolfie. He couldn't say it because his presence might derail Ted's plan.Ted simply smiled faintly in return and said quietly, "People change, just as time changes a great many things… including pe

Pantera pursed his lips—what was wrong with Theodore the Magnificent? And it was certainly much better than 'Pants'!However, there was no helping it since Ted was the boss, and even if Pantera was himself a big deal to everyone else, he was still just an obedient henchman to Ted, a fact he would never dare argue.Ted chuckled just then. "Relax—no need to get so nervous, Wolfie. Just remember what I told you, and proceed as you should. It won't affect me if you spill the beans, but I'm going to be really upset. And if I'm upset, everything you begged for earlier won't count. Understood?""Remember the story I told you earlier? It had to be a secret, but Ted wasn't keeping him out of the loop. What did that mean? Was he planning to silence him? Wolfie did not even dare to think. He tried nonetheless, "M-Mr. York, I don't mind dying, and I know I have no right to ask you for anything, but I owe Mr. Zarkonnen a tremendous debt and he saved my life on numerous occasions, and I couldn't repay him.
