I was still standing away from the crowd, but rather than the initial loneliness and jarring out-of-place feeling I felt, I was smiling. With the phone pressed against my ear, I listened to Anna go on and on about how even though Enzo looked like he was scoring points, she was still team Jordan.

But there was no team Jordan to begin with. He didn’t even want his name engraved on a jersey, or anywhere else for that matter, as long as it had to do with me.

“He doesn’t want me, Anna,” I sighed, an

There was a really lovely couple on the dance floor. She wore a backless green dress with intricate weaves delicately pooling around her feet. He looked at her like she was his everything, like he couldn't do life without her.I'd never been a lover girl. I mean, I knew love was real and that it existed. I just didn't think that it was for me, or that I wanted it. I was good with whatever I could get. It never worried me. But now, watching them, I couldn't help but wonder what that would feel like for me.I leaned on the table, watching her giggle under his attention. He whispered something into her ear that made her blush. She looked away, caught me watching, then giggled even harder. I smiled with her, because it was the right thing to do. Because her laughter was infectious.Because she had no idea how much I wanted that to be me. It was very surprising, but real.I knew when he arrived at the table. He disappeared during the tour, and half of me thought he'd gone to look for someo

The tour had just ended, and Enzo was still with his father’s friends. I’d returned to our seat in the hall, watching the way the lights dimmed as the opening turned into a party. People went to the dance floor, the slow music edging them on, hands wrapped around waists, soft whispers reverberating. Suddenly, Jordan was in front of me, watching. “Hello,” I murmured. It was foolish, I knew. But I had nothing else to say. “What are you…”"Can we talk?" It was sudden, but the look in his eyes communicated how important it was. So, rather than argue, I got on my feet and followed him out of the hall. He took the left, opposite the direction of the reporters outside. Soon, we found ourselves in a corridor on the second floor, overlooking the city. Someone handed him a bottle of wine and two glasses, almost like he'd requested it a while ago. I waited as he poured mine, handing it over to me, before doing the same for himself. The silence that followed was peaceful. We just stayed there,

It was a full event and a lot was happening at the same time. Friedrich, Enzo's father and the founder of the hotel, was called upon to give a speech. And he, in turn, called Jordan up on stage. I was wondering what it was as Jordan got on his feet, buttoned up his tux, and walked up there. Fiona, the host, smiled up at him as he arrived, planting a soft kiss on his cheeks. I searched for Heather immediately. She was sitting at his table, next to where Jordan was seated. And she looked really sad. Nita and Joshua sat opposite them, their eyes glued to the podium with equally proud looks on their faces. “Jordan Arthur,” Friedrich began. “Is one of the loveliest men I know. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur, have done such a fine job raising him, and it is good to see him take their footsteps, barely twenty-five. He is in medical school at the University of the Saints, but never ceases to come back when his family, his heritage, needs him.""And he isn't one of those kids who relaxes

The launch had already started by the time we arrived at the hotel. It was fiery red, bright lights, the cadence, the persona…or maybe the lack of it. I watched from the back seat of the very fine limo I was reminded I couldn’t afford, my heart in my mouth. I would chew if I wasn’t so nervous. "Game time," Jordan muttered dryly, like we were preparing for battle. His eyes swept across my features in the dimly lit space, and he narrowed his eyes. “What?” I whispered, unable to find my voice. “Is there something on my face?”His eyes seemed to narrow more. And then, he raised his head slightly. He was looking at something behind me. Or more like above me. It displeased him, if the word displeasure could be written all over his features. It was slow – the way I turned around, the feeling that I knew what it was about already washing through me.Enzo.He was at the window, waiting for me to get down. The windows were tinted, but Enzo knew I was in here. I didn’t know whether to be elat

Nita called me an hour later. We were running late, so we had to do everything fast. When I knocked on her door, she pulled it open immediately, returning into the closet in her room.“Thank you so much for doing this, Marcus,” she said in a rush, already reaching for her shoes, while I handled the corset of her dress. “I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for you.”“Heather?” I murmured, watching the instant grimace on her face. It was so hilarious that I burst out laughing. “I was joking. Chill.”“Don’t joke about her like that,” Nita muttered, still struggling between standing straight to let me put the corset in place and putting on her shoes. “You have to stay still,” I said. “If not, we’re not going to leave here in another hour.”Finally stopping all the jittering, Nita let me finish the corset. When I stepped away, I angled my head, remembering the dress. I knew it was going to look great on her. Red was Nita's color. “You got it,” I said, unable to hide the surp

  • The Things We Don't Say   Marcus: All to You

Three short hours later, after a few glasses of champagne with Tommy and Angelo telling me how they met, we were done. I was staring at my reflection in the mirror, utterly blown away. I'd never given much attention to my looks. I'd never had the time for that.I remembered how it started. It was back in school, before I discovered my sexuality. I had begged my parents to let me attend a sleepover at a classmate's. He was popular back in school, and I desperately wanted to be in his circle, even if he thought he was too cool for me.We were kids, but they were nasty kids. And in that, I was dared to kiss one of the girls in the room. She’d put up a look of disgust, like it was the worst thing imaginable. And that just seemed to have done it.I didn’t look at a mirror longer than was necessary. I just thought I was okay. Good to look at.But the reflection staring back at me was more than just okay; more than just good to look at. I was hot. The words brought a small tinge of red to my
