Zara’s POV

Zarek’s voice droned on like static in my ears, each syllable tumbling into the next until it was nothing but meaningless noise. For five minutes he had been spewing his usual nonsense, jokes covered in cocky grins, words meant to distract me from the weight pressing on my chest. Normally, I might have rolled my eyes or even snapped back. But not now. Not when my pulse beat too fast, not when the walls of the classroom felt like they were caving in.

I couldn’t breathe.

I shoved my books into my bag, the scrape of chair legs against the floor echoing too loud.

Heads turned. Whispers started. But I didn’t care. I didn’t wait for him to finish, didn’t look back when his voice faltered mid-sentence.

My legs carried me out of the classroom before I had time to second-guess myself. I only knew one thing: I had to find Jace.

.

The hallways stretched endlessly, lined with portraits of Blackwood’s history — headmasters with stern gazes, wolves caught mid-shift, glassy-eyed r

Zarek I never liked waiting around for answers. If something didn’t add up, I’d poke, prod, and claw at it until I got the truth—or at least the flavor of it. And lately? Something about Talia had been itching at me like a burr caught in my fur. Kai’s name lingered around her like smoke, and every time it came up, she got twitchy. Too twitchy. I might not be the most serious guy around—hell, everyone thinks I’m a joke half the time—but I’m not blind. So I decided to pay her a little visit. Not because I cared. Please. Don’t flatter her. It was pure curiosity. The same kind that makes a cat paw at a closed box until it tips over. I found her exactly where I expected: the courtyard garden, with its little benches and vines curling up stone walls. She was sitting alone, pretending to read a book, though her eyes kept flicking to her phone like it was whispering secrets only she could hear. I leaned against the ivy wall, watching her for a beat. Then, I grinned, pushed off, and sau

Zara The silence stretched between us like a noose. My words—By saying the truth—still lingered in the air, heavy enough to choke us both. Atlas didn’t look away, but I saw it. The shaking in his eyes. The war. His jaw worked, teeth pressing together like he was holding back a thousand answers, and when he finally spoke, his voice was low, clipped, almost dangerous. “You don’t know what you’re asking, Zara.” I folded my arms, forcing steel into my spine even though my heart felt like it was battering against my ribs. “I think I do. Stop pretending. Stop dancing around it. Since when did you know I was Mira?” Atlas’s eyes darkened. “You’re not Mira.” “Don’t lie to me.” “I’m not lying!” His voice cracked out sharp enough to make the birds in the trees scatter. He dragged a hand through his hair, pacing a few steps like the ground itself couldn’t hold his restlessness. “You’re not Mira anymore. That girl—” he broke off, shaking his head. “That girl’s gone.” Anger flared hot in my

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 105 ~ The weight of the truth

Zara Morning came like an insult. The sun’s pale rays filtered through the academy windows as though nothing in the world had shifted, as though last night I hadn’t been tricked, locked away, and forced to dig through fragments of a past I could barely hold on to. My hands still ached from pounding that damned door. My throat was still rough from screaming at Seraphine. And my chest—well, my chest was worse. Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Atlas’s face in those fragments, and heard the way he begged me to explain why I was breaking him apart. I hadn’t slept. Not properly. My wolf inside me paced endlessly, snapping at nothing. And I carried every shred of that anger straight into class. The hallway leading into the classroom buzzed with the usual chatter, but it dimmed as soon as I pushed through the doors. Heads turned. Whispers rose. Maybe it was the storm in my eyes, maybe it was the way my steps didn’t falter, didn’t hesitate. Because I knew exactly where I was goi

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 104 ~ The fire behind her eyes

Zara The air that hit me as Zarek wrenched open that damned trap door was thick with dust. My lungs burned as if I’d been clawing against stone for hours, though I knew it hadn’t been that long. My palms still tingled from pounding against the sealed barrier, my throat raw from shouting at Seraphine, Lira, and Nova to open up before the memory had slammed into me like a dagger between the ribs. I didn’t want Zarek to see that part—the way my knees had gone weak, the way I’d pressed my forehead against the cold wood when fragments of Atlas and I had surfaced. But Zarek wasn’t the type you could hide things from. He leaned against the doorframe like he hadn’t just broken an ancient door that should’ve held for centuries, his smirk dangerous and lazy all at once. His hair caught the faint glow of the sconces, his eyes gleaming with something between amusement and something sharper—concern, maybe, though he would never admit it outright. “Well,” he drawled, his voice dripping with mo

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 103 ~ The locked door

Zara I pressed my forehead against the door, my chest heaving. For a moment, the emptiness of the room pressed down on me, like it wanted to swallow me whole. My breaths echoed too loudly. I hated the way fear curled its cold fingers around my spine. No. Don’t give them this power. I stepped back, glaring at the heavy wood. “Fine,” I muttered. “If you won’t open, I’ll make you.” I threw my weight against it. The door rattled but held. Again. Harder. My shoulder throbbed, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t the type to wait around for a savior. And yet… as I crashed against the door again, something cracked open inside me. Not the wood—my memory. I wasn’t Zara anymore. I was Mira. The office walls blurred, replaced by a hazy fragment from a previous semester. The memory came sharp, incomplete, like a broken mirror reflecting too many angles at once. Atlas stood before me. His eyes desperate, voice low, hands reaching as though I was slipping away from him. “Mira,” he said. “Why are yo

  • The Top Boy Is My Mate   Chapter 102 ~ The summons

Zara’s POV After gymnastics, the air was heavy with sweat, the kind of thickness that clung to your skin long after you left the mats. My legs still trembled, the rhythm of stretches and drills humming in my muscles, when I noticed her. Seraphine. She leaned against the far wall, arms crossed, her shadow stretching across the polished gym floor. She didn’t join the chatter, the laughter, the lazy shuffle of students filing out. She stayed. Waiting and watching. When my eyes met hers, her lips curled into that smile—the one that always looked painted on, as though she’d stolen it from a doll and pinned it to her face. “Zara,” she called softly, her voice laced with something I couldn’t name. “Principal Kieran wants you.” The words hit like a stone to my chest. I blinked. “What?” “At the old office,” she said, so smoothly it felt rehearsed. “He asked for you. Said it couldn’t wait.” The old office. My throat tightened. That place hadn’t been used in years. Everyone knew it was
