Chapter 4

Author: Trees in Art
Back then, Harrison might have seemed cold, but every bit of affection he had went to me.

He was so particular about cleanliness that he never let anyone near him.

But whenever it snowed, he’d take my cold hand without hesitation and tuck it into his coat pocket to warm it.

He was a workaholic, yet he canceled a meeting over a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars and drove me to the beach overnight, just because I’d casually mentioned wanting to see the ocean.

He’d frown and scold me for being reckless, then take off his coat and wrap it around me.

But over the past three years, the transmigrator had twisted our relationship while trying to complete her conquest missions.

She’d drugged Harrison and climbed into his bed. She’d acted like a lunatic, picking fights with every woman who got near him.

She’d trampled my dignity and worn down the deep affection Harrison once felt for me until all that remained was disgust.

He was only treating Jocelyn so well now because she reminded him of who I’d been before I lost my mind three years ago.

I looked at the contempt in his eyes and felt nothing but weariness.

The necklace belonged to my mother. It was one of the few keepsakes she’d left me.

But the transmigrator had worn it around her neck every day, flaunting it to provoke Jocelyn.

Now, somehow, it belonged to Jocelyn.

The transmigrator would probably have argued that the necklace was mine.

I didn’t.

There was no point explaining anything to these people.

I reached behind my neck and found the clasp.

With a click, I released it.

A smug smile flashed across Jocelyn’s face. She reached out to take it.

“Thank you, Summer—”

But I didn’t hand it to her.

I turned my wrist and tossed the necklace into the puddle at my feet.

Mud splashed across Jocelyn’s dress.

“Ah!” Jocelyn shrieked and stumbled back, then burst into tears.

“Summer, if you didn’t want to give it to me, you could’ve just said so. Why throw away something Mom left for me…?”

“What are you doing?” Harrison pulled Jocelyn under the umbrella and glared at me.

Shane was furious. He rushed over and raised his hand to slap me again.

“You bitch! I’ll—”

I stood still and watched his hand hover in the air.

“Go ahead,” I said coldly. “If you hit me, tomorrow’s headline will be ‘Shane Leigh Assaults an Ordinary Woman in Broad Daylight.’”

Shane’s hand froze.

He trembled with rage, but didn’t dare bring it down.

I ignored him.

In front of them all, I took off my earrings and bracelet.

Then I bent down and pulled off the heels that had rubbed my heels raw and bloody.

I stood barefoot in the rain and looked up at the people on the steps.

“I won’t take a single thing from the Leigh family with me. From this moment on, I have nothing to do with the Leigh or Kane families.”

Then I turned and walked away.

The fans at the bottom of the steps were stunned by the way I’d acted.

Someone took a step back. The crowd that had blocked the way parted without thinking.

Rain ran down my face as I walked farther into the night.

Shane still had his hand raised. His gaze dropped to the heels on the ground.

Suddenly, he shuddered.

The backs of the shoes were soaked through with blood.

The other men on the steps stared at the red stains, too.

Over the past three years, the “Summer Leigh” they knew would scream and cry for half a month over the slightest paper cut, forcing them all to comfort her.

But just now, my heels had been rubbed raw, and I’d walked barefoot over ground full of gravel in the rain without even frowning.

It felt familiar and strange at the same time.

Because before my body got stolen by the transmigrator three years ago, the real Summer Leigh had been just like this.

Jocelyn sensed the shift in the mood.

She saw the men staring in the direction I’d gone, and panic flashed in her eyes.

She quickly crouched and picked up the necklace.

“Don’t be mad at Summer, you guys.” Jocelyn held the necklace in her hands and smiled.

“She must’ve taken it from my room without thinking. She didn’t mean to steal it. I said I didn’t blame her. Why is she still so bad-tempered?”

Then she instinctively leaned toward Harrison.

Usually, he would have caught her gently.

But this time, Harrison didn’t move. He stepped halfway aside to avoid her.

Jocelyn stumbled and fell short of his arms. She looked up in disbelief.

“Harrison…”

Harrison frowned at the necklace in her hands and asked in a low voice, “Jocelyn, you said she stole this from your room?”

Jocelyn’s heart lurched, but she nodded through it.

“Y-yes. It was a coming-of-age gift my mother left for me—”

“You’re lying.”

  • The Transmigrator Left Me a Nightmare. Now I’m Taking Over   Chapter 10

At the end of the year, Newford hosted the city’s most prestigious business gala.I wore a perfectly tailored designer suit and entered as the investment world’s biggest rising star of the year. The ballroom glittered with lights. I held a glass of champagne after wrapping up a conversation with several investors about upcoming projects. When I turned around, I came face-to-face with four people I knew and barely recognized.Mason, Shane, Wesley, and Harrison.I couldn’t imagine how much effort the three Leigh brothers had gone through just to get into a gala at this level. They looked much older and more haggard.Half of Mason’s hair had turned white, and his once-straight back had begun to stoop.Shane’s face was covered in stubble. He had grown so thin he was almost unrecognizable, and the confidence of the A-list star he used to be was gone.Wesley looked even worse. His eyes were unfocused, and he seemed utterly lifeless.Meanwhile, Harrison stared at me with his mouth hanging ope

[Summer, where are you?][I’ve been looking for you all night. Please answer your phone.][Just let me know you’re safe. I’m begging you.]The golden boy of the capital’s elite, who had always acted like he was above everyone else, was actually begging me.I stared at the last text, my finger hovering over the screen for a second. Then I deleted every message without hesitation.Dawn was breaking outside.I switched off my phone and pulled out the SIM card linked to every number in the Leigh family. Then I walked over to the clinic’s trash can and dropped it in.The first rays of sunlight fell across the street, bright enough to make me squint.A debt of forty million dollars sounded like an impossible sum to repay. But they all seemed to have forgotten that before the transmigrator took over my body, I had never been a woman who had to rely on the Leigh family to survive.Three years earlier, I had already secured several key patents and secretly invested in an overseas pharmaceutical

For three years, the transmigrator had chased Harrison and bought outrageously expensive gifts for the Leigh brothers to show off. She’d maxed out all my credit cards and taken out high-interest online loans in my name. The principal and interest came to $40 million. That was the parting gift she’d left me: kicked out of my home and saddled with a mountain of debt.As I stared at the numbers, my phone suddenly vibrated.Shane was calling.I watched his name flash on the screen for several seconds before I answered.“Summer!”As soon as the call connected, Shane’s voice came through. It trembled with panic. “You finally picked up… Where are you? Do you know how hard it’s raining? Your feet are still bleeding. Tell me where you are, and I’ll come get you right now!”I moved the phone away from my ear. “What do you want?”My tone made Shane freeze.“Summer… I’m sorry.”The superstar who’d never been willing to back down now sounded close to tears.“We checked the hotel security footage…

Mason’s face was cold, and his voice came out stiff. “Play it.”The butler set the tablet on the table. The footage was clear. Summer had been standing quietly by the pool, looking at the view.Jocelyn walked over on her own. The moment she saw Harrison appear around the corner, she smiled at Summer, then suddenly leaned backward into the pool without warning.Summer hadn’t even raised a hand. When the video ended, an even heavier silence fell over everyone.Shane stared at the screen, looking as if all the strength had drained out of him.“N-no. That’s impossible!”He looked at his right hand. That was the hand he’d used to slap Summer half an hour earlier. He’d hit her with all his strength, splitting the corner of her mouth.“Jocelyn, what’s going on?”Mason’s voice had lost its usual composure. He turned and fixed his gaze on her.Jocelyn dropped to her knees. “Mason, Shane, I didn’t mean to…“Summer scared me. I thought she was going to push me. I was so nervous that I slipped… I

Harrison froze.“Last month, Jocelyn fell down the stairs on her own. When I said I hadn’t pushed her, did you believe me?“Today, she jumped into the pool herself. When I said I hadn’t touched her, did any of you believe me?”Harrison’s face grew paler with every question.“Harrison, for the past three years, whenever Jocelyn and I had a conflict, all of you blamed me without even asking what happened. You’d already decided I was a cruel, jealous person.“So I admitted I was guilty. Isn’t that what you wanted all along?”I gave him a bitter smile. “Now you’ve got what you wanted, and you’re asking why I didn’t defend myself. Harrison, don’t you see how ridiculous you all are?”Rain fell between us.Harrison’s tall frame swayed.“Summer…”He instinctively took a step toward me, reaching out as if he wanted to hold on to something.Just then, a night bus pulled up at the stop by the road.I didn’t look at him again. I turned and climbed aboard. The driver, an older man, saw how miserabl
