Chapter 2

Author: Hide in the Grass
Edwin had not expected Lydia to be bold enough to destroy the royal signet personally bestowed on me by the former king.

The veins on his forehead popped with fury as he shouted in rage, only for Alaric's guards to force him to the ground.

The maids and senior attendants I had brought stepped forward to help, but the guards did not budge. Instead, they obeyed Lydia's every command.

"Wow! What a great younger brother I have! Someone, summon Alaric to the inner courtyard!" I was so angry I laughed before I turned to look at the smug Lydia.

Since she refused to listen to reason and insisted on slandering me as her imagined rival, I wanted to see who would be left standing in the end. "I would like to see what evidence you have that proves I tried to seduce my own younger brother!"

Lydia was the center of attention in the noisy crowd. However, she did not panic at all. Instead, she took a box a maid hurriedly handed to her and opened it before casually throwing it to the ground. Inside was a masterfully crafted sculpture made from emerald.

"This was carved from emeralds produced by House Upton's mines in the south. When you arrived, you had someone present this gift, and you wrote House Upton's name on the guest list."

"Sylvia of House Upton… The evidence is here staring you right in the face. Still pretending to be some fancy princess?"

I met Lydia's haughty gaze and nodded with a cold smile. "Indeed, I did present this gift. It is also true that one of my attendants wrote down House Upton's name on the guest list."

A sudden commotion broke out.

"Pretending to be a member of the royal family is a capital crime!"

"More than that, she impersonated the Princess, the Queen Mother's precious treasure and His Majesty's own elder sister!"

"This woman will use any filthy trick to seduce Alaric. If I were Princess Lydia, I would have her thrown into the moat."

As both mockery and slander filled my ears, I stopped my furious maids and senior servants before giving a sneering look over everyone around me. Then I said, "But those were not the only gifts I presented. Although House Upton and Alaric ended the engagement, their business dealings never did. As House Upton is based in the far south, they had petitioned for the Queen Mother to present their gifts instead. However, as she had caught a cold in the past few days, I am delivering the gifts on her behalf.

"I am here today to present gifts on behalf of the Queen Mother, House Upton, and the Grand Princess’s Household."

Seeing Lydia's face darken only made the whole thing seem even more absurd for me. "Ask the steward of Alaric's household whether my words are true!"

Ever since the engagement between House Upton and Alaric's estate had ended, it was awkward for both sides to meet each other. My mother and Alaric had discussed the gifts long ago and the steward had been present, so he would know about it.

While Alaric was being held back by court officials and royal advisers drinking with him and had not come to the inner courtyard, the steward could not refuse the summons.

Soon, the steward hurried over. But the moment he saw me, he angrily said, "So you're the vile woman who pretended to be Princess Sophia and tried to get into our prince's bed? You can forget about all of it! You're merely the daughter of a merchant! Do you truly think we are afraid of you?!"

After saying that, he turned to the crowd and shook his head in regret. "This was all my fault. I was deceived by her pretending to be Princess Sophia. Today is Prince Alaric's wedding day, yet I've allowed her to slip in with the intention of ruining the royal couple. I'll have someone drive them out of the estate at once!"

Edwin cursed in fury, but I looked closely at the steward's face as he turned his head. "Are you the newly appointed steward? Where is Cedric? Summon him here. The person present at the time was not you. It was Cedric."

Lydia burst into laughter. "You should at least have found out who is in charge now before you snuck into Alaric's estate. Alaric gave me authority over the household a long time ago and I've already replaced the estate's older servants with people I trust. You can forget about waiting for Cedric to cover for you!"

As I looked at Alaric kneeling there in such a miserable state, I felt as if I were seeing that thin little boy from the past. The same boy who had to please everyone just to eat.Victor and I were blood siblings. When our mother brought him to us as our younger brother, I did not feel much affection for him. All I felt was that it was pitiful for a prince to be bullied by the royal servants.Over time, we grew close. As the three of us grew older together, the bond between siblings grew with us.Alaric had no desire to fight for the throne. Instead, when the other younger princes cursed Victor behind his back while he was still Crown Prince, Alaric stood up for him and fought them. Every time Alaric returned from the Royal Academy, he was covered in wounds. Victor, who had always been gentle on the outside yet cold within, would treat his wounds. As for me, because our father's favor had drawn the other princesses' displeasure, Alaric would speak up in my defense too. Eventually,

The Royal Guard had completely surrounded Alaric's estate so tightly no one could get in or out as everyone could only watch what was happening.Victor walked over, motioned for the royal physician to examine Queen Mother Maria. Then, he sent someone to take me away so I could change into fresh clothes. Only then did he look with a faint smile at Alaric, who stood frozen in place.Victor said, "A married man truly is different. You even dare challenge our mother and sister now. Alaric, I wonder if there are still sides of you I have yet to see."The inner courtyard was deathly silent, with only gulping could be heard. Alaric's reply finally came as his voice trembled, "My king, I... I didn't mean it that way..."Only despair and fear remained in Alaric's mind and none of his bravado from earlier remained. Back during the conflict for the throne, he had seen his usually gentle elder brother kill without any hesitation. Now, looking at that same sinister smile from that day on the k

Alaric nodded, his resentful gaze landing on me. "This is Sophia's fault too. When Lydia mistook you for someone else, you should have proven your innocence. Why did you provoke her and make her keep making the same mistake?"His words made me laugh from sheer anger. I raised my hand and pointed at the damaged royal signet on the ground, then looked at the two of them as I gritted my teeth. "I showed my signet from the very beginning, but what did she do? She refused to believe it and even smashed the signet Father gave me."Alaric, is that what you call not proving my innocence? She refused to believe me and decided I was seducing you on purpose. Since when has this become the victim's fault?"Alaric frowned. Then, he looked at me coldly even as Lydia sobbed. "Lydia is usually very gentle. If you had not deliberately used Sylvia's identity to provoke her, why would she have done such things?"After saying that, he looked at my mother before kicking the royal attendant holding Lydi

"My precious Sophia!"My mother, Queen Mother Maria, staggered forward and slapped Alaric across the face with all her strength when she saw what happened to me. Then, she walked over and wrapped me tightly in her cloak, her face filled with endless disappointment and anger."Edwin managed to send someone to inform me you were helping an outsider humiliate your own sister… I did not believe it at first, but now that I have seen it with my own eyes… Alaric! Do you even know what crimes you have committed today?!"Alaric's face became deathly pale. He was just about to speak when Lydia stormed forward in anger and tried to strike my mother. A sharp-eyed royal attendant immediately stepped in and stopped her at once, only to receive a vicious slap."Do you really want Sylvia to marry into Alaric's household that badly? First, you lend her your people and let her use Princess Sophia's identity to enter the estate and get into his bed. Now that it has been exposed, you came in person to

The voices around us fell silent at once, and even Lydia froze. The next instant, her eyes filled with tears as she ran weakly into Alaric's arms with a pitiful sob. "You're finally here, my love! Sylvia is pretending to be the princess and sneaks into the estate so she could get into your bed and seduce you, then break us apart. Please, see justice be done for me!"I staggered to my feet and fastened the cloak my maid handed me. Then, I looked coldly at the two of them, fire burning in my eyes.Alaric's face was pale as he wiped the cold sweat from his brow, yet he still patted Lydia's shoulder to comfort her. "Why would she pretend to be the princess to seduce me, Lydia? Is there some misunderstanding? She is clearly..."Before he could finish, Lydia's sobs cut him off. She glared at me and raised her foot, about to ram herself into a nearby column. "Since you don't believe me, I might as well die and go back to my own world. I don't want to stay in this rotten medieval world anyw

  • The Transmigrator's Mistake   Chapter 3

I looked around at the unfamiliar faces and frowned. No wonder I had not seen any of the old household staff. My dear younger brother had truly lost all sense. He had been so enthralled by this jealous woman that he had dismissed Cedric, who had served him for more than a decade. When Lydia saw me fall silent, she grew even more arrogant. "Today is my wedding day, so I won't make things difficult for you. Beg on your knees and apologize to me, then swear you'll never appear before the prince again. Then, I won't expose this matter. Otherwise, it's not my fault for doing what duty demands. Impersonating royalty is a capital crime. Even the Queen Mother won't be able to save House Upton!"With that, she led the guards toward me. Her sharp nails dug hard into my arm. The maids and senior attendants beside me were stopped by the guards in their tracks, and Edwin was sweating all over from anxiety."Stop! How dare you disrespect Princess Sophia! Stop this at once!" He yelled. But a guar
