“What do you know?” Lauren asked, her earlier firm composure slipping just a little, though she tried to keep her chin lifted and her expression controlled.

There was a flicker in her eyes now, something uncertain, something that betrayed the confidence she had been wearing so effortlessly all evening.

“Take a guess,” Tessa replied with a faint smirk, her tone calm but loaded.

She stood there, glass in hand, completely at ease, as though the tension in the air didn’t belong to her at all.

The glass doors at the company’s exit reflected the fading light outside, turning the lobby into a quiet blend of gold and shadow. Staff moved in and out, some in a hurry to leave, others lingering in small groups, their voices low but restless. The air carried the usual end-of-day tension, but beneath it, something heavier lingered, something unspoken.Tessa walked steadily toward the exit, her heels tapping softly against the polished floor. Her posture was straight, her pace calm, but her mind was far from still. Too many things had happened in such a short time, and though her face revealed nothing, her thoughts were anything but settled.Lauren’s defiance. The whispers in the office. The truth slowly forcing its way into the open. She had expected resistance. She had expected chaos. But even then, the way everything was unfolding felt like watching a storm gather from a distance, you knew it was coming, but you couldn’t yet tell how destructive it would be.She was almost at t

Sandra sat quietly at her desk, her fingers idly tapping against the polished surface as her chin rested on her palm. The office was unusually calm, but that calm never lasted long in a place where whispers traveled faster than emails. In front of her stood Melina, leaning slightly forward, her voice lowered but still carrying enough weight to stir curiosity.“I heard Ms. Dean was mistakenly taken by the Dean family as a baby,” Melina said, her tone filled with that familiar excitement that came with sharing something scandalous. “The real Dean’s heiress is Tessa.”Sandra didn’t respond immediately. Her eyes flickered, betraying the fact that she had heard similar whispers already. Still, hearing it spoken aloud made it feel more real, more dangerous. Before she could say anything, a sharp voice sliced through the air like a blade.“You guys have something else to do?”Lauren appeared. The temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly. Both Melina and Sandra stiffened, their bo

Lauren didn’t slow down until she got to the door. Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached for the handle, but she steadied herself before pushing it open. The door creaked softly as it gave way, revealing the dimly lit bedroom inside. A faint scent of cologne lingered in the air, mixed with something heavier, something familiar. She stepped in and shut the door quietly behind her. Then she froze.Right there, seated on the edge of the bed, was Paschal Deveraux. Yes. The same Paschal whom Tessa was accused of sleeping with. Whom Tessa was accused of being responsible for her pregnancy. Today, here, he was, with Lauren. He had his back to the entrance, completely unaware she had walked in. One leg was crossed over the other, his posture relaxed, almost too relaxed for someone in a situation like this. In his hand, he held a small mirror, angling it carefully while running a comb through his hair with slow, deliberate strokes. It was almost like he was preparing for somethin

Lauren didn’t remember how she got out of the hall.Everything after that moment had blurred together. Her chest still felt tight, like she had been running for too long without rest, even though she had only just stepped out.Her heels clicked unevenly against the polished staircase as she descended, one hand gripping the rail tightly. Her movements lacked their usual grace, and anyone watching closely would notice the slight tremble in her fingers. Her mind was loud.Too loud.Every word from earlier echoed again and again.'Don’t ever call me Dad again.'Her breath hitched slightly, but she forced it down. This was not the time to lose control. Not here. Not where anyone could see her.Just as she reached the middle of the staircase, she abruptly bumped into someone. Her shoulder collided lightly, causing her to stop in her tracks. It was Rosa. The older woman had her back turned slightly, her phone pressed to her ear, completely absorbed in her conversation. She didn’t even noti

The air inside the grand hall had shifted, thick with tension that clung to every breath taken. Moments ago, laughter and soft clinking of glasses had filled the space, but now everything felt different, like a storm had quietly walked in and settled over everyone without warning.Tessa stood there, composed, her posture straight and her expression calm, yet her eyes held something else, sharp and deliberate. Slowly, she lowered her gaze to where Hugh lay sprawled on the polished floor, his body awkward, his breathing exaggerated. To anyone watching, he looked like a frail old man overcome by weakness. But Tessa knew better.Their eyes met for the briefest second. It was enough. She gave the slightest nod, so subtle that no one else noticed. But Hugh did. Immediately, his body went limp. The groaning stopped, replaced by a dramatic stillness as he slumped fully, like someone who had truly lost consciousness.A ripple of murmurs spread across the hall.“Ms. Lauren,” Tessa said, her

“Mom-in-law!”The voice rang out loudly, cutting through the already tense atmosphere like a blunt knife. Hugh Oswald rushed forward, his worn-out shoes scraping noisily against the polished floor as he stretched out both hands toward Rosa, his face lit up with an excitement that looked almost misplaced in such a setting. But without hesitation, Rosa slapped his hand away with visible irritation, her face twisting in disgust as though she had just been touched by something filthy. She didn’t even spare him another glance before turning and walking away, her steps quick, her expression burning with a mix of rage and embarrassment. The rejection was loud enough.Clear enough.Hugh staggered slightly from the force of her slap, his excitement faltering for a moment before confusion settled on his face. But he remained speechless. Just watching. Across from him, Lauren stood frozen. Her body felt stiff, her fingers curled slightly at her sides, her nails digging into her palms as thoug
