Chapter 4

Author: Evening Chase
Christopher sounded aggrieved. "Gabriella, I'm scared. Just thinking about it makes me shiver.

"Daniel died a horrible death, and so many of our comrades are gone too. It's all because of Victor. And now Oliver, who's about to be executed, is trying to clear his name? How many more people is he going to hurt before he stops?"

Gabriella's fingers tensed. His words had shattered whatever brief calm she had just found.

"Don't overthink this. Stay in bed, okay? I'll have the family doctor drop by now."

"I don't want the family doctor. I want you to come home."

Christopher's voice came through more clearly. "Gabriella, you believe what Oliver said, don't you? You think he's not a traitor. Have you forgotten how he nearly killed you back then?"

Gabriella's breath caught, and she didn't answer. Of course, she remembered.

Back then, Oliver sent word that I was at a warehouse at the dock. Without hesitation, Gabriella led a team and stormed in, only to find the place rigged with bombs. If her teammate hadn't shielded her from the blast, she would have died on the spot.

"Back then, you lay in the warehouse, covered in blood and trapped by the flames. I was the one who risked my life dragging you out of the fire!

"I also took a bullet for you during the evacuation. That's why my heart hasn't been the same ever since!" Christopher's voice rose a few notches before cracking with emotion.

"Victor and Oliver set that trap from the very beginning. Gabriella, you can't forget what he did just because time has passed. Don't let him fool you."

I became frantic. I wanted to tell Gabriella that wasn't the truth, but she couldn't hear a single word I said.

Gabriella stayed silent for a long time. Finally, she ended the call and drove to the Gakoli Police Department.

The narcotics unit was still waiting in the office for updates. As soon as they saw her walk in, everyone stood.

Gabriella tossed the application form for drilling onto the conference table.

"According to Oliver's testimony, this was a trap that he and Victor had planned in advance. They probably wanted to lure us under the bridge under the guise of reopening the case. Then they'll trigger an explosion."

At her words, the entire office fell silent.

"It would be a disservice to our comrades who sacrificed their lives if we let the testimony of a death-row inmate overturn the judgment we made back then."

Everyone in the room exchanged glances in silence.

Back then, after the warehouse explosion, most of them had taken part in the rescue operation. They had seen Gabriella carried out, covered in blood, and the bodies of their fallen comrades.

After that tragedy, no one was willing to take such a risk again.

Gabriella slammed her hand down on the conference table. "I'm submitting the application immediately. Coordinate with all relevant departments. We'll be conducting a controlled demolition of Pier 17 at the Joy Bridge. We're going to put an end to their plan."

Once submitted, the application was quickly given the green light.

The explosion was scheduled for the early hours of the morning. The authorities made sure everyone was evacuated beforehand to ensure everything went off without a hitch.

While preparations were in full swing, Gabriella drove alone to Gakoli's maximum-security prison.

Oliver was led into a visitation room, separated by thick bulletproof glass. The moment he saw her, he grinned from ear to ear.

"Chief Campbell, what brings you here? Aren't you going to demolish the pier?"

Gabriella stared at him coldly. "I know all about your plan with Victor. You wanted to trick me into leading a team to the pier and wipe us all out.

"I've already submitted an application form. At dawn, we'll conduct a controlled explosion at Pier 17. No matter what you're hiding in the pier, it'll be blown to pieces."

Hearing that, Oliver froze for a moment before bursting into laughter.

Christopher was ultimately sentenced to death for multiple charges. He immediately broke down and started trembling violently. He clutched his chest, his face deathly pale, as he slid down the defendant's chair. The court officers immediately moved in to secure the scene as medical personnel rushed forward. They worked to resuscitate him for three hours at the hospital. Despite their efforts, he suffered massive cardiac bleeding and was pronounced dead on the operating table. On the same day, the court approved Oliver's death sentence and authorized the execution order. Before his execution, Gabriella went to Gakoli's maximum-security prison to see him one last time.In the visitation room, Oliver looked as nonchalant as ever. Gabriella sat opposite him without speaking, staring at him in silence. The smile faded from his face as he locked eyes with her. "Even in death, you'll never make up for what you did to Victor."Once visitation hours were over, Oliver was taken away by

I drifted beside Gabriella, watching her from behind. For the first time, I realized she seemed to have aged overnight. The next morning, every seat in the largest press room at the Gakoli Police Department was taken.Gabriella didn't start with her usual official opening remarks. She swept her gaze across the room in silence. "Today, on behalf of the Gakoli Police Department, I'm here to tell everyone the truth about the alleged defection of Victor Patton five years ago."Five years ago, Victor Patton, an officer of the Customs Narcotics Unit, was assigned by the department to go undercover inside Oliver Rypien's drug trafficking and smuggling cartel in a classified takedown operation. "During the mission, he repeatedly risked his life to pass intel to the police force, providing critical leads that proved crucial in solving many cases."While he was undercover, someone infiltrated the police force, and he repeatedly leaked operational plans to the drug cartel, resulting in th

The light at the entryway was on. Hearing the door open, Christopher immediately went to greet Gabriella."Gabriella, you're home." He instinctively reached out, took the coat she had taken off, and hung it on the coat rack nearby. "Is the work assignment all done? You haven't been home in two days. You must be exhausted." Gabriella changed her shoes, watching him. "It's fine."Christopher followed Gabriella into the living room. He got her a glass of water and casually sat on the couch next to her. "I watched the news again today. Netizens are still talking about what Oliver said, and they're speaking up for Victor. "Gabriella, what do you think Victor's up to? It's been five years since he ran away, yet he's still using a death-row inmate to stir up trouble. Hasn't he hurt enough people? "I'm pretty sure Victor's the one behind Oliver's confession. He's trying to overturn the case and clear his name."Gabriella looked up at Christopher and said calmly, "You seem to under

At that moment, a veteran detective sitting in the corner spoke up. "Chief Campbell, there's one more person we haven't looked into.""Who?""Christopher Wright."The atmosphere in the conference room turned tense. Five years of memories instantly flashed through Gabriella's mind. To her, Christopher had always been gentle, thoughtful, and understanding. But whenever Gabriella began to have doubts about that case, he would always bring up the warehouse explosion at the right time. He would remind her of herself lying in the rubble, covered in blood, and any lingering doubt would be suppressed once again."Look into him. Leave no stone unturned. I want to know every single thing about Christopher—from the moment he was born until now. I want everything about him—his records, his whereabouts, and his connections!"The special task force moved at an alarming speed. In less than three days, every detail about Christopher was presented to Gabriella. Christopher wasn't who he clai

Gabriella started mumbling, her voice growing softer. Finally, with red eyes, she couldn't hold herself back and broke down in tears.I drifted to her side, watching her. It felt like I was in a dream.Five years ago, I watched Gabriella rise to the top of the Gakoli Police Department. I watched her condemn me in front of the media and saw how gentle and caring she was with Christopher. Now, she finally knew the truth. I had never once betrayed the police force, my beliefs, or my duty as an officer.Under the forensic team's expedited testing, the results came back in a few hours. The fragmented remains recovered from Pier 17 were a perfect match with multiple biological samples of mine in the police records. After a thorough verification from various sources, it was confirmed that the remains belonged to me. The team also ran a forensic skeletal analysis and carbonization tests, further confirming that the time of death matched the time I was said to have defected from the pol

Gabriella was nearly 40 years old. She had risen from an elite cadet at the police academy to the highest-ranked officer in the Gakoli Police Department. She had overcome many obstacles, yet she had never felt anything like this before. At that moment, the person on the other end was still yelling into the phone. "Chief Campbell? Can you hear me?"Hearing no response from Gabriella, he repeated, "The demolition has been called off! All the explosive devices have been safely disarmed!""What did you just say? Then what was that loud explosion all about?""It was the structural engineer, Belinda Locke. She led a team and used a non-destructive breaching technique to open Pier 17's maintenance cavity."The commander continued, "She and the team entered the site two hours in advance. All of them signed a life-and-death waiver. "They took over the work zone under the pretense of an emergency structural safety inspection. We had just finished dismantling the explosive devices when th

"Oh, Gabriella. I can't believe someone like you was able to arrest me." Oliver stopped smiling and fixed his gaze on Gabriella through the thick bulletproof glass."All these years, you must've really hated Victor, huh?"Gabriella didn't answer, but her hands clenched into fists at her sides.

After ending the call, Gabriella Campbell glanced at the caller ID. Seeing the call was from the Supreme Court, she frowned. I could tell Gabriella was puzzled. The court hearing had been set for weeks, and every stage of the proceedings had been filed and approved in advance. There shouldn't have
