“Don’t try to be a hero tonight, or I’ll make you beg until your throat is dry,” Xavier whispered.

He had this deep voice that could either make my knees buckle or make me want to punch him in the throat.

He gripped my waist firmly and dragged me into the dark, oppressive forest. I felt the emerald silk of my dress rub against my bare skin. He had forced me to come here without wearing any underwear.

A hungry roar echoed in the distance, instantly killing the aristocratic politeness of the crow

When Vanguard appeared beneath us, it felt like we'd entered another world, one made entirely of glass towers, razor-sharp architectural lines, and light reflecting off steel and black stone. The car waiting for us on the private tarmac was pitch-black and completely silent. There were no flashy insignias or unnecessary displays of wealth, which was exactly Xavier's style: controlled, discreet, and deliberately mysterious.I could feel the difference the moment we entered the heart of the city.In Wintersaint, people looked at my collar with the polite, carefully trained expressions that came from years of palace etiquette. Here, their gazes were considerably sharper, and there was something almost hungry about the way they looked at me. The people on the streets might not have known the collar's entire history, but they were perceptive enough to notice the dark metal and the red stone around my throat, then shift their eyes toward Xavier and linger t

Xavier POV Once the corridor was clear, Xavier stepped into an empty room and called Nikolai. The King answered. "Xavier." "There was an attack on the Queen's tea room." "Casualties?" "None." "Then why are you calling me?" "Because your guards are incompetent, Nik." He gritted his teeth. Xavier leaned against the desk. "You allowed Freya Holloway into a room with the Queen while she was carrying a blade." "Watch yourself." "I am." Xavier's voice dropped. "You should be watching your guards." Nikolai's breath sharpened. "You're in my palace." "My woman is in your palace." He paused. My claimed Omega was standing within reach of a knife because your men failed to do their jobs." "Your claim doesn't make you king." "No." Xavier smiled. "But it makes me the man who will come looking for whoever put a blade near her throat." "You threaten my court?" "I threaten whoever was stupid enough to think I wouldn't notice." Nikolai went quiet. Xavier could almost hear his teeth

The alarms kept screaming.I pulled Freya back from the main corridor just as another group of guards rushed past, heading the wrong direction. The attackers weren't trying to breach the palace. They were steering us."Move," I ordered.Freya's face was white, but she followed. Kaelen caught up a second later, breathing hard, cane forgotten. The King had already pulled Althea behind a reinforced door with two of his personal guards."They're not after the Queen," I said. "Not primarily."Kaelen's eyes narrowed. "Then who?"Before I could answer, the air shifted.Xavier came down the corridor like the alarms belonged to him. His coat was open, expression carved from ice. The moment he saw the blood on my hands and the knife still in my grip, something dangerous flashed through his eyes."Report," he said."Coordinated. Bolts first, then blades. They herded us away from the clean exits." I met his gaze. "Someone wanted us in the servants' passages."His jaw flexed once. He looked at Fre

The guards reached for their swords. One of the attackers climbed through the broken window, knife already drawn.I grabbed the silver serving tray from the floor and hurled it at his wrist. The blade clattered away. I closed the distance before he could recover, drove my forearm into his throat, and kicked the side of his knee. He dropped hard. I took the secondary knife from his belt, forced him onto his stomach, and kept my weight on him just long enough to make sure he stayed down.A guard stared at me."What?" I snapped. He looked away. "Nothing.""Then move."A second man came through the window with a short sword. I yanked a chair into his path. He stumbled. I slammed my shoulder into his ribs and took both of us to the glass-strewn floor. His blade came down. I caught his wrist with both hands, the edge hovering too close to my face. He was stronger. For a second the steel refused to move.I twisted until something in his wrist gave. The sword loosened. I ripped it free and st

I woke to the sound of a drawer closing. For a few seconds, I didn't remember where I was. Then I felt the Gleipnir Collar against my throat and remembered everything. The Queen. The deal. Xavier. I sat up. I saw Xavier standing by the wardrobe, already dressed in black. A slim travel bag sat at his feet. He was checking the last few things before leaving. He hadn't woken me. "You're leaving." He glanced over. "Yes." "Now?" "Within the hour." He closed the bag and set it beside him. "The transport is waiting. The Vanguard meeting was moved forward." I pushed the covers aside and stood. The stone floor was cold against my bare feet. "And me?" Xavier turned toward me. "You are required to see the Queen this morning." "Required?" I glared at him. "Why?" "Three reasons." He picked up the bag. "One, you're still officially my guest, and guests don't ignore a direct summons. Two, she's fucking bored, and bored queens become dangerous. Three—" The corner of his mouth

I stepped out of the library and into the corridor. Two figures were waiting near the entrance to the formal gardens. The Queen stood between them. She looked at me as if she had been expecting me."Ravenna."I stopped. "Your Majesty."Her eyes flicked down to the garnet at my throat."Walk with me. The garden is quiet this morning. I prefer conversations without walls that listen."I followed her into the snow. Her attendants stayed a few steps behind."You can drop the act," she said.I glanced at her. "I don't know what act you mean."The Queen stopped beside a stone bench overlooking the frozen pools."I used to make that same face."I said nothing."I thought I could survive by pretending to be less dangerous than I was."My pulse jumped.Ciel stirred. The Queen looked toward the palace."Your father has not changed much. He still thinks everything can be handled quietly.""I don't know what you mean."Her eyes came back to mine. "Yes. You do."The wind moved through the black pi
