Chapter 6

Author: Chilled Edamame
To Leo's surprise, Chloe was waiting for him at the door.

"A few days from now is my grandma's birthday. There's 500 grand in this card. Use it to buy a gift, just don't get anything too cheap!" Chloe handed him a card.

Susan had been going on about this nonstop, which annoyed Chloe, and she had been too busy lately to deal with it herself.

"You're not worried I'll take the money and run?" Leo asked with a grin. If Susan found out, she'd probably be furious.

"Do whatever you want," Chloe said casually before getting into her car.

Leo was about to head to his scooter when the window suddenly rolled down. Chloe's voice came through. "Be careful. Don't go wandering off. Martin's a really petty guy!"

Before Leo could respond, the window rolled up and the engine roared to life.

Although Chloe's tone was cold and she hadn't given him a chance to speak, Leo felt warm on the inside. Chloe clearly cared about him.

"Do I even need to buy a gift…?" He slipped the card into his pocket and hopped onto his electric scooter.

He didn't see anything wrong with the scooter. Sure, it wasn't fast, but in city traffic, it was more than enough to outrun even luxury cars.

Last year, he attended Teresa Yates' birthday party. It was a typical family show-off affair. He had been humiliated, and Chloe had suffered embarrassment by association.

Leo recalled that Teresa liked antique paintings. He knew a little about them and had even collected quite a few when he traveled the world with Jerry back in the day. Any piece he owned now would easily be priceless.

He had bought a high-end villa to store his collection. It came with top-notch security.

But when he arrived, he was stunned. The entire collection was gone. There was a sign at the door.

"The owner is bankrupt. Everything is for sale at low prices."

"Vampire! You wiped me out!" Leo was furious and rushed to check his other properties. Every one of them had been emptied. Some had even been sold. The few left were unsold units.

Finally, staring at the garages that once housed his luxury cars, which were now completely empty, Leo could only throw his head back and groan.

"My limited-edition sports cars! You didn't buy an island. You bought a whole country!"

He had assumed it was just the money in the card that was gone, but now he realized he was completely penniless.

Still, he shook off the disappointment. These things were from his reckless youth, and after years as a mercenary, he didn't care much for material possessions anymore.

The main concern now was to get a proper gift. Although Chloe had given him 500 grand, he didn't want to spend a woman's money.

In fact, in the past two years, Leo hadn't spent a dime of his family's money. He even donated his allowance to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

'I've still got a conscience!' Leo thought proudly. Who else could manage hardship and still support others?

As for his own spending, Jerry sent him a few grand each month. At first, Leo had been grateful, but now he knew it was just a tiny fraction of what he had earned.

"I got it!"

Leo recalled one more property Jerry didn't know about. It was a four-bedroom apartment downtown, where he had stored some of his prized possessions.

He hadn't bought it in his own name, but in the name of a female college student he had once sponsored. It was a precaution in case Jerry tried to seize his assets.

Good things happened to good people. That was probably the best decision he ever made.

After charging his scooter, Leo headed straight for what might be his last remaining estate.

His heart raced. He hadn't checked on this place in years. If it had been sold, he'd be devastated. There were many of his favorite collectibles inside.

The apartment was in a prime downtown location, a four-bedroom luxury unit. The prices of real estate there had skyrocketed.

There was a saying that rich people only grew richer. Simply owning such a property had made him rich. It was a testament to his foresight.

"Come on, you can't sell off my last property after I helped pay for your college!" Leo muttered as he reached the door.

Luckily, he had installed a fingerprint lock himself. Otherwise, finding the keys would have been impossible.

Just as he was about to open it, he heard faint sounds from inside.

'Oh no!' Leo instinctively pulled his hand back, but the lock responded quickly and the door opened.

"Who's there?" A sweet voice came from inside.

'Thank goodness she's a girl!' Leo thought, relieved. If it had been some rough guy, he'd have to figure out a way to reclaim his collectibles.

"I think I was at the wrong door," he called out and prepared to leave. The girl hadn't even updated the fingerprints.

"Leo, is that you?" Suddenly, an excited voice came from inside. The door opened, revealing a tall, stunning woman in professional attire. She looked around twenty-five or twenty-six.

Leo froze. She looked somewhat familiar.

"Leo, it really is you! I knew you'd come back, so I kept your fingerprint registered!" The tall woman threw her arms around him warmly.

"Miss, this is way too much enthusiasm for a first meeting!" Leo blushed. Girls really were bold nowadays.

"It's me, Linda!" Linda Hamilton said. She looked slightly annoyed as she shook Leo's arms.

"Linda…?"

Leo slapped his forehead. Of course, she was the college girl he had sponsored. Years later, she had grown up beautifully.

"Wow, girls really change after college. You look so much more mature now!" he said.

"This is the Leo you've been talking about? He's so different from the way you described him. He even blushes!"

A few ladies peeked from behind the doorway. They were mostly young women who were all very attractive.

Leo felt dizzy. He couldn't believe supporting someone could bring such results, but now he was married, so those thoughts were strictly off-limits.

"Leo, why are you blushing? Didn't you say back then that I should marry you to repay the money you gave me for school after graduation?" Linda teased.

"Uh, I was young and foolish back then. I'm a grown man now, and I'm married!" Leo laughed.

"You're married?" Linda was clearly shocked.

"Yeah. So is this a dorm now?" Leo asked while nodding.

"No, I wanted to start a business. The place was empty, so I turned it into an office. I hope you don't mind!" Linda said.

"No worries. I just came to pick up a few things. My collection should still be here, right?" Leo asked.

"Of course. I didn't dare touch the study," Linda replied before immediately letting him in.

The exterior had changed a lot, but the study still smelled familiar and was spotless. The walls were lined with antique paintings.

Seeing his collection again felt nostalgic.

"Are all these real?" the women asked curiously.

"Of course! Do you think I'd collect fakes?" Leo casually chatted while admiring the pieces. The atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed.

He trusted Linda's character completely, so he wasn't worried about losing anything.

She introduced him to the other women. They were either her classmates or juniors.

Leo had sponsored her so much that she had used part of it to help them in his name. After graduation, many struggled with jobs, so they started their own business.

Leo picked out a couple of pieces he wasn't too attached to and prepared to leave.

Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door. It was accompanied by brazen laughter.

"Hey, sweethearts, hurry up and open the door!"

The air in the conference room was thick with tension. Martin clearly had Chloe cornered this time.Chloe knew very well that if this deal fell through, the company she had built from scratch since college might not survive for long. Martin's terms were brutal. Agreeing to them would be the same as handing over the company outright."Chloe, think about it carefully. Mr. Mason is only doing what's best for us," Amanda whispered beside her."Amanda, we've fought for years to build this. Do you really want to just give it away?" Chloe asked with frustration."You've seen the state of the company. This is the only way out. Once things stabilize, the business will grow even stronger. In the end, it'll all work out," Amanda said.Martin didn't rush her. He leaned back comfortably in his chair, confident that Chloe would give in. He was certain she wouldn't dare to refuse.Chloe and her key team members ran through the numbers and possible outcomes, but the more they analyzed, the mor

"Ms. Yates, a few companies we struck deals with suddenly changed their minds!"Early that morning, Chloe heard terrible news from her secretary."Did they say why?" Chloe frowned a little. The secretary shook her head. "No. They just said they need more time to reassess.""I see." Chloe's brows furrowed. It wasn't just a minor setback. The timing couldn't have been worse. She had just expanded her business, and the new production site had only recently gone into operation. This was the most critical phase of growth.Thankfully, Leo had somehow pulled in 50 million yesterday. That should buy them some time. But things only spiraled from there. One bad report after another came in. Even the factory workers had begun a large-scale strike. This month's payroll hadn't gone through yet, but they had already explained the short delay. In all her years running the company, Chloe had never failed to pay her employees. So many things happening at once couldn't be a coincidence.Even

Who could possibly eat while looking at those two weird-looking faces?Leo was an exception. He dug in like he hadn't eaten in days. He was especially focused on the lobster. 'Damn. This is good.'Harold and Steven were so furious that they nearly flipped the table, but they didn't dare. Leo seemed to know some kind of witchcraft, and neither of them wanted to test it.Finally, they had no choice but to give in."Fine. We'll pay for the car and the damages. Now fix us!" Harold said, forcing down his rage."What's the rush? Have someone send everything over first," Leo said without even looking up. He was still tearing into the lobster.Harold was furious. All these years, people had treated him with respect, yet now he was being humiliated by a live-in son-in-law. He couldn't stand it.But a wise man knew when to back off. So he made a few calls, ordering a brand-new Bentley to be delivered immediately. Only a luxury car would do, or Leo might not let them off the hook.Soon en

"Leo, have you lost your mind? You think your arm is worth 50 million? Apologize right now!" Susan snapped. She was terrified of offending Harold's family. If they decided to retaliate, life would become miserable for them. Sure, things were going well for them now, but if the Yates family wanted to, they could ruin Chloe's company overnight.Even if Harold offered to pay, Susan wouldn't dare take it."Mom, they're the ones who hurt Leo's arm! Why aren't you saying anything about that?" Chloe protested."He asked for it! Who told him to mess with Steven? He deserved what he got," Susan shot back."Did you hear that? You're just a kept man in this house. Getting smacked by me should be an honor," Steve sneered."If that's your attitude, then your face might just stay that way forever," Leo said. "You…!" Steven shot up from the couch, but Harold quickly grabbed his arm."We're all family here. Let's not make things worse. Steven was in the wrong this time. Let's just forget i

"I'm taking you to the hospital!" Mandy said the moment she snapped out of it."What hospital? Took you long enough to remember. It's old news now. Let's just go pick up my wife from work," Leo said impatiently. His tone was casual, like his broken arm was nothing more than a paper cut.Mandy blinked in disbelief. His arm was clearly fractured, yet he looked completely unfazed. Maybe he really wasn't just some kept pretty boy, after all. They drove straight toward the business park. On the way, Leo even stopped by a farmer's market to grab some groceries. He was like a perfect suburban husband running errands after work.By the time they reached the business park, it was almost closing time. They picked Chloe up right on time.Chloe immediately noticed the car. Her husband had gone to 'get the car fixed,' and now he'd come back in a different, much more expensive one. Naturally, she was curious.Mandy didn't hold back. She told Chloe everything that had happened that afternoon in

Was Mandy really that old now? A high schooler just called her ma'am."What's wrong with her?" Tatiana asked, puzzled."Nothing. Probably just a little shaken up," Leo replied with a grin.Mandy really was, but it wasn't from fear. Instead, it was from being called ma'am.For the rest of the drive, Mandy barely spoke. Every few minutes, she pulled out her compact mirror to check her face, convinced she was spotting new wrinkles.Tatiana, on the other hand, wouldn't stop asking Leo questions. She kept calling him an expert driver, which honestly made him feel pretty good.Naturally, he did what men often do, which was to play the wise mentor. He tried to talk some sense into her, telling her to stay away from Steven's crowd."Ma'am, can you take the wheel for a bit?" Tatiana asked as they neared the city. She stopped the car."Oh, okay," Mandy said in a daze. She was still not over the trauma of being called ma'am.Tatiana got out, grabbed a backpack from the trunk, and climbed
