Chapter 2

Author: Rainy Bell
Damon was silent for a moment. He looked at Yuna, his gaze calm but complicated.

"Yuna, you're beautiful. In all these years, I've never seen a female more beautiful than you. You come from the Frostveil Pack, the pack that once ruled the Northlands. Your bloodline is noble. Your wolf's coat is as white as fresh snow. The pack needs a Luna like you.

"Vera is ordinary. She isn't exceptional. She isn't beautiful. But she worries about me. She takes care of me when I'm exhausted. With her, I feel a peace and a sense of belonging I never knew before."

A sense of belonging.

Yuna's chest tightened painfully at those words.

Then what about the home they built together for nine years?

"Don't worry," Damon added calmly. "I won't break our bond. You'll still be my mate. I promised your parents I would take care of you for the rest of your life."

He paused, slicing away the last shred of pretense.

"But from now on, I will never love you even a little. My life with Vera is none of your business. Sorry, I know I broke our vows, but I can't help it. I loved you for many years. If you're going to blame someone, blame me. It has nothing to do with Vera."

After saying that, he didn't even look at Yuna's pale face again. He turned and walked out of the house without hesitation.

Yuna collapsed onto the floor, and the only sound filling the room was her ragged breathing.

Nine years ago, she was just an orphan brought to the Frostfang Pack after her own pack had fallen.

Back then, she had been proud, sharp-edged, and slow to trust.

But Damon had spent four full years slowly working his way into her world.

At the time, she didn't know how to express herself. She refused to show weakness. Whenever she was injured, she gritted her teeth and endured it alone.

Whenever she saw other she-wolves getting close to Damon, she simply turned away with a cold face and walked off.

The moment she truly let her guard down happened when she was eighteen.

That year, she went alone to the Northlands to visit the newly raised memorial for the fallen Frostveil Pack.

But while she was there, a group of Rogues ambushed her.

Damon had just returned from training in the Southern Territory when he heard what happened. He rushed to the Northlands with a group of warriors and found her lying in a pool of blood.

She still remembered that night clearly. Damon had been covered in blood himself. His eyes were bloodshot, wild with fury and fear. When he gathered her into his arms, he held her so tightly it hurt.

"Yuna, when you're with me, you don't have to keep pretending you're strong all the time. You can rely on me. You can throw tantrums. You can give me every grievance, every bit of pain you're carrying.

"Because I will always come to you."

It was from that moment on that Yuna finally learned how to be a she-wolf who was cherished. She started letting herself sulk in front of him, making unreasonable demands, and showing the fragile parts of herself she had always hidden from everyone else.

But now, he said he was tired.

That night, Yuna cried in the darkness until her whole body shook, as if someone had torn half her soul out of her chest.

Even so, she still refused to give up.

The next day, she went to the Neutral Zone and found the small flower shop that Vera owned.

It wasn't a large place.

Bundles of wild roses, camellias, and silverleaf herbs were arranged outside the door. The scent of flowers drifted through the air, mixed with a faint trace of wood.

Yuna looked at that busy, ordinary, almost plain woman as she slid a check, filled with an eye-watering sum, across the table.

"Ms. Vera, stay away from Damon," she said, her voice icy. "This money will be enough for you to live out the rest of your life."

Vera stared at the check and froze. Then her eyes slowly turned red, but she didn't reach out to take it.

"Ms. Yuna," she said softly, shaking her head, her eyes glistening with tears. "I'll leave. Please don't make things difficult for Damon."

After saying that, she didn't even dare look at Yuna again. She hurriedly turned away and began packing her things.

Yuna stood there without moving. But instead of feeling relief, her chest felt heavier than ever.

That night, she received the news.

Vera had been in a car accident while leaving the Neutral Zone.

She survived, but the pup in her womb, Damon's child, didn't.

The day after the trial, Yuna didn't leave the Northlands right away. She went first to the Frostveil Pack cemetery.Snow lay over the gravestones, a vast stretch of white that looked like silent moonlight from afar.Kyle walked with her to the edge of the cemetery, then stopped.Yuna entered by herself. She stood before her parents' stones and was silent for a long moment. Then, she slowly knelt and let her hand rest gently on the cold stone."I'm late," she whispered. The wind swept across the snowfield. No one responded to her words.Yet for the first time, Yuna didn't feel broken. She didn't feel crushed under the weight of her own pain. This time, she hadn't come bruised and broken, seeking someone to fight her battles or wipe her tears. She had taken back her justice with her own hands before even setting foot here. She looked down, her voice soft but steady. "I chose the wrong person before and took the wrong path. But from today on, I'll walk the rest of it right."

Yuna stared at Damon kneeling before her, silent for a long moment. Then, she slowly looked up."Fine."By the time the moon reached its peak, a wide clearing had been made in the center of the snowfield.Damon and Yuna stepped into it together. In the next heartbeat, two wolves appeared on the field.Everyone held their breath. The black wolf was massive and imposing. Even with its injuries, it radiated the presence of an Alpha. The white wolf was slimmer than before, but its fur was pure white, its eyes sharp. In the moonlight, it looked like a creature risen from the ancient lands of Frostveil Pack. They faced each other for a heartbeat, then lunged at almost the same instant.Black and white collided violently in the snow, sending clouds of powdery frost flying.Damon didn't yield. He knew this wasn't a battle he could step aside for. What Yuna wanted had never been his mercy. She wanted to take back her pride herself, fair and square. She swiped a claw at Damon's old s

The moment Vera lunged, Yuna didn't hesitate. She shifted into her white wolf form and leaped to the side. The silver dust scattered in the air as the white wolf slammed into Vera from the side, flipping her onto the ground. The bag of silver dust flew from her hands, and she let out a sharp scream as she hit the rocky floor. She tried to scramble up, but a snow-white paw pressed heavily on her shoulder and pinned her down.Yuna didn't strike. She simply lowered her head, icy blue wolf eyes fixed on Vera like she was staring at a piece of trash long overdue for disposal.Vera was finally afraid. Her face pressed against the cold stone, her voice trembling. "Don't kill me. Yuna, I was wrong, I really was—"The white wolf didn't move.Damon stood a few steps away. He watched Yuna pin Vera down, his throat tight as if something were stuck. In the past, he would have instinctively worried about Vera. Now, all he felt was the weight of his own guilt. He swallowed hard, and his voi

Yuna had been ready. She twisted aside and lunged forward, shifting into her white wolf form in midair. The snow-white wolf barreled down the jagged slope, and the color drained from Vera's face in an instant. The two Rogues at her side shifted as well, lunging forward. Clearly, they'd been paid to keep Yuna occupied.Yuna didn't hesitate. Her white form leaped through the wind, swiping one claw to knock aside the gray wolf on her left, then twisting to sink her teeth into the back of the other's neck. Her injuries hadn't fully healed, but her movements were precise, each strike filled with controlled, lethal force. At the same moment, Kyle shifted into a black wolf, intercepting the adult male wolf lunging from behind. The snowfield instantly became a blur of motion. She'd planned to use the darkness to escape, but she forgot about the two bags of silver dust she'd brought with her.Her panicked flight caught her foot on one, and she tumbled into another bag.White dust explo

The moment Vera vanished, Damon felt a strange calm settle over him.If she had stayed in the main house, playing weak and innocent, he might have been able to buy some time. But her flight was an admission of guilt. The guards quickly searched her room and found a pile of things she hadn't managed to take. There were notes between her and Rowan, receipts for silver dust, and a hastily drawn map of the Northlands. Most damning of all was a half-written letter. There was only one sentence on it."Once she's dead, the Alpha will be completely mine."There was no need to guess who the "she" was.Damon stared at the thin sheet of paper, the last trace of warmth in his eyes gone.He finally understood just how long Vera had been deceiving him.It wasn't one or two lies. From the moment they met, every step had been calculated. And he had held someone like that in his arms and protected her.Damon folded the letter, his voice cold and emotionless. "Find her."-At the same time,

After leaving Shadowthorn Pack, Damon didn't go looking for Vera first. He went straight to the council hall, slammed the case files on the table with a hard thud, and barked, "Go through everything again. The basement, the car accident, and anyone who had contact with Vera. Look through it all again. Don't miss a thing."His Beta flinched at the look on his face and left immediately to carry out the orders. That night, Damon went alone to Yuna's room. The moment he pushed the door open, he almost convinced himself that Yuna would step out any second, scolding him for being late while lighting the lamp by the window. But the room was empty. She hadn't taken much. Just a few of her everyday cloaks, two ledgers, and an old wooden box left behind by the Frostveil Pack. Everything else was untouched.Damon ran his hand lightly over one of the cloaks. He suddenly recalled that long ago, Yuna hadn't been the "temperamental Luna" everyone whispered about now. When she first arrived a
