เข้าสู่ระบบIt's twelve o'clock in the afternoon. Lunch break had begun. Most of the staff streamed out, chatting enthusiastically about trendy cafes or new menus they wanted to try. Yet, there I was, still frozen in front of the photocopier. My stomach growled in protest, but I had to finish printing a massive stack of documents to meet Vanesha’s insane deadline.
"Can you even do your job?!"
A harsh shout shattered the silence of the division lobby. I turned to see a senior staff member berating a junior man who looked exhausted from carrying several heavy boxes of blank paper.
"You were supposed to put them there! Why on earth did you go to the third floor? If you want to play hide-and-seek, don't do it here!" the senior man snapped impatiently.
"I’m sorry, Sir. No one told me the exact location. They told me the seventh floor, then it was moved to the third, but it turned out to be on the first," the man explained softly. It was crystal clear that he was being bullied and pranked by the other seniors.
"Fine, just put them there!" the senior ordered curtly before leaving the man in an awkward silence.
He set the heavy boxes down right next to me. He was panting, his hand clutching his waist as if his bones were about to break from hauling those loads from floor to floor. Seeing him suffer like that felt like looking into a mirror—both of us were being treated like trash.
“Would you like something to drink?” I asked spontaneously, offering an unopened bottle of mineral water.
He didn't take it immediately. Instead, he stared at me with a look of pure bewilderment, as if kindness was the rarest thing in this building.
“Take it! I have two,” I offered again, showing him my own bottle which was already opened and half-empty.
“Thank you,” he said sincerely.
“No problem.”
He drank greedily without pausing for breath, as if he had just crossed a desert. He was truly parched.
“Are you new here?” I asked.
He nodded slowly.
“Getting picked on by the seniors, huh? They’re so cruel.”
“I’m the new guy; they don’t feel the need to respect me,” he replied quietly, a trace of coldness hidden beneath his voice.
“We’re in the same boat!” I answered with a grin, pointing to the mountain of documents in the photocopier. “You see all this? This isn't my job at all. I’m being bullied in broad daylight today, too.”
He went quiet for a moment, looking at me with an unreadable gaze before finally reaching out his hand. “I’m Dominic.”
“I’m Daisy,” I replied, shaking his hand firmly. It felt good to find a comrade in the middle of this hell.
Just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief after talking with Dominic, the wicked Vanesha appeared in the distance. She walked toward us with that facial expression that never failed to get under my skin.
"Is it done?" she asked curtly, snatching the printouts that had just come out of the machine.
"Yes," I answered as briefly as possible.
"Not bad for a graduate from a third-tier, no-name college," Vanesha mocked, without even a hint of gratitude.
My blood boiled. Exhaustion and hunger finally broke my restraint. "The draft you gave me was a mess, like something a grade-schooler would write. Of course, my work is far more presentable."
Vanesha froze. She turned back, her face flushing red and her eyes glaring sharply. "You dare talk back to me? It seems you’re tired of working and want to be fired this very day!"
I fell silent. My courage vanished instantly as I remembered my fragile position. She had powerful connections, while I had nothing.
"On what grounds do you think you have the right to fire anyone?"
A deep voice suddenly cut in. Dominic spoke up with a tone that was calm yet piercing. Vanesha turned, eyeing the bespectacled man beside me from head to toe, lingering on his shabby shirt. She snorted, then burst into a condescending laugh.
"Don't get involved, Newbie! But whatever, I’m in a good mood today. I won't let my day be ruined by dealing with trash like you two!" Vanesha looked back at me with arrogance. "Bring all those documents to the meeting room as soon as you're finished!"
She strutted away, leaving behind the suffocating scent of her expensive perfume.
The rustle of paper, the low hum of printers, and the rhythmic clicking of keyboards formed the symphony of a busy office today. My eyes were glued to the monitor, tackling every task at maximum speed. My ambition was simple: finish everything as quickly as possible so I could polish the proposal for the advertising competition I planned to enter. To be honest, there was something else making my heart race faster than any deadline. Dominic. He had asked me to have lunch with him today. Even though it wasn't an official date—just a casual lunch—I felt inexplicably enthusiastic. One way or another, my desk had to be clear before the lunch break began.“Is your idea ready yet, Daisy?” Jovanca asked, momentarily breaking my focus.“Almost. Just a little more; I think everything will be settled today,” I replied without looking away from the screen.“It has to be submitted tomorrow, right? How is it? Are you confident in your concept this time?” Jovanca asked again.“Definitely. I don't th
The night felt far longer than usual. I lay in my room, utterly consumed by a profound sense of boredom. To pass the time, I began fiddling with my phone, opening a folder in my cloud storage that contained drafts for an advertising competition proposal.I had been intentionally designing an ad concept with a humorous storyline. My theory was that a touch of humor could make a struggling product much more appealing to the masses."This looks good enough. Should I ask for Jovanca’s opinion tomorrow? Ah, whatever, tomorrow it is," I murmured softly.I was just about to turn off my phone when I suddenly heard faint sounds from the room next door. My walls were far from soundproof, a common trait in this old apartment building. I could sense signs of life in the room that had been vacant until now."Oh, right. I forgot someone moved in yesterday. That’s nice; at least it won't be as lonely as before," I thought.I climbed out of bed and stepped toward the balcony. My balcony was quite clo
What I had just witnessed made one thing painfully clear: I was no one to him. Dominic, who had always been so kind to me, had so easily given the food that was meant for me to a female colleague in his office.'Infuriating!' I hissed inwardly, my steps heavy with resentment as I stomped back to my cubicle.I tried to stare at my laptop screen, but my focus was completely shattered. The proposal in front of me no longer held any interest. Despite the lavish lunch box from Mr. Axel sitting on my desk, my appetite had vanished. I still found myself longing for that simple canteen food Dominic had bought for me earlier. Before long, a few of my coworkers returned to the room. They immediately hummed with excitement upon seeing the luxury meal on my desk.“Look at all this food! This is so expensive! Daisy, is this yours?” one of them asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.Jovanca, who had just arrived, stood there gaping in disbelief. “Daisy! Is this a gift from Mr. Axel?” she asked,
I was dead serious this time. While almost everyone else had cleared out to hunt for lunch, I stayed behind, hunched over my cubicle and pouring my soul into the proposal for the upcoming office competition. But just as my concentration reached its peak, Dominic appeared out of nowhere."Tell me the truth—is it real? Did you actually go on a date with Axel?" he asked, his breath coming in ragged gasps as if he had sprinted across the building just to confront me."You heard the rumors too? I guess the gossip has reached your department after all," I sighed, leaning back and trying to ignore the dull throb of exhaustion in my head."You really went out with him? Be careful, Daisy! He’s a notorious philanderer. He treats women like temporary trophies! Don't let yourself get caught in a trap set by a wolf like him!" Dominic’s voice was sharp with a concern that bordered on desperation, as if he saw me standing on the edge of a precarious cliff.I offered a thin smile and pulled out the c
The night was growing late, and Daisy was on the verge of drifting off when a sudden message notification from Dominic shattered the silence. Her eyes, once heavy with sleep, flew open as she read the words glowing on her screen. Dominic was moving into her neighborhood! He explained that he had been "evicted" from his old boarding house after the landlord hiked the rent unilaterally and excessively."I thought my rent was steep, but Dominic’s place was clearly on another level of madness," Daisy murmured, staring up at her ceiling. A faint smile touched her lips, a sense of relief quietly washing over her. "Well, at least I won't be lonely on my way home anymore. It’ll be nice to have someone going in the same direction."Daisy set her phone aside and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep. But elsewhere, Dominic’s mood was the polar opposite. He had just been smiling at the thought of being closer to Daisy when a call from Kevin ruined everything."Ugh, why is he calling this late!" he gr
During our dinner for two, Axel suddenly made his move, asking me to be his girlfriend. This wealthy man, notorious for his reputation as a flirt, seemed to be merely toying with me, as if I were nothing more than a curious new plaything. However, contrary to his expectations, I responded with a composure that left him blinking in surprise."Is this how you usually flirt with girls? I hope you stop immediately," I replied calmly. "Only gold diggers will flock to you if you act like this. You will never find sincere love."Axel’s eyes widened; he clearly hadn't expected to receive a lecture across a Michelin-starred table. "Wow, you talk exactly like an old lady!""The founder of my orphanage was my role model. She was always wise in her words and actions. Unfortunately, she is gone now," I answered, followed by a long sigh filled with a sudden, heavy longing."Good grief, why did your face suddenly turn so gloomy, like you’re at a funeral?" Axel grumbled, attempting to shake off the me
In the midst of a never-ending mountain of paperwork, a shadow suddenly fell across my desk. I looked up to find Dominic standing there. I still couldn’t fathom what stroke of luck had brought such a kind-hearted man to my division, though he looked just as burdened as I was, judging by the thick s
The iron warehouse door was thrown open, slamming against the stone wall with a deafening thud. Marcus jolted, his movements freezing instantly. Dominic stood there. Without a word, he lunged in. With one swift motion, he seized Marcus by the collar, tearing him away from me, and unleashed a barra
This is the fate of a subordinate. While senior staff relax and draw a salary for doing nothing, I am the one stuck doing all their work. Morning hasn't even turned into afternoon, yet tasks are already piling up on my shoulders. This time, I’ve even been turned into a courier—the difference being
That morning, it felt incredibly heavy just to open my eyes. The image of Vanesha’s face, ready to torment me again, made me reluctant to get out of bed. But reality slapped me awake—I needed money. In a world that constantly demands bill payments, pride is a luxury I cannot yet afford.I had no ch
