If you are poor, do not expect to be treated with dignity. That is the bitter truth I have carried with me for a long time.

My name is Daisy Maybelle. Growing up in an orphanage forged me into a resilient woman, a strength that eventually helped me graduate and secure a position as a priority hire at Nova Core Inc. However, that status has proven to be a boomerang, circling back to strike me down.

"Get this done, now! And stop being so spoiled!"

Vanesha flung a stack of documents directly at my face. The papers scattered like wounded birds, and with them, my pride fell to the floor.

"But... this isn't part of my main task," I protested softly, my voice barely a thread.

"Are you actually picking and choose your assignments now?" Vanesha, a blonde with piercing blue eyes, barked fiercely. "You are lucky enough just to have a desk in this building! You aren’t some prestigious overseas graduate, so stop making excuses. Just get it done!"

I could only bow my head, swallowing the thick dregs of humiliation. In this office, I am nothing more than easy prey for people like her.

"I want everything finished by one o'clock! I have a meeting, and those documents had better be on my desk!" Vanesha snapped as she turned on her heel. The sharp click-clack of her arrogant red stilettos echoed down the hallway, a rhythmic reminder of her dominance over my world.

I had no choice. Vanesha held the seniority in my division, and she knew exactly how to wield it. Around me, a few new staff members remained frozen, barely daring to breathe. Their eyes were averted, fixed on their own screens in a silent prayer that the chaotic draft wouldn't be tossed onto their desks next.

Not a soul moved to help. Everyone knew these tasks fell far outside my job description, but from the moment I arrived, Vanesha had painted a target on my back. She preyed on the one thing I couldn't change. She knew I was an orphan. A girl without connections, without a powerful lineage, and without a single person to stand in her way.

"Just hurry up and do it," Clara, another junior staff member, hissed. There wasn't a shred of sympathy in her voice; only the cold relief that it was my burden to carry, not hers.

With a heavy sigh, I began to touch the rough draft. My task was to arrange a PowerPoint presentation and print it out to be distributed to the executives during the meeting this afternoon.

Vanesha deliberately offloaded this burden onto me. She knows I am an easy target. Poor and easily oppressed, but she also knows I am capable. Ironically, despite her constant boasting about her prestigious overseas degree, her work is an absolute disaster. The rough draft she handed me was so disorganized it would have been a humiliation to present to the directors. Consequently, the task of rebuilding her entire mess from scratch has fallen to me.

Why do I endure it?

Because I have no choice but to be perfect. If my performance is even slightly lacking, Vanesha wouldn’t hesitate to have me thrown out. As the niece of the Head of HR, terminating someone like me is as effortless for her as snapping her fingers.

She often sneers that I don’t deserve a place in such a prestigious firm. Yet, every time she claims I only got in through "luck," she is effectively spitting in her own face. She is the one whose seat was bought through family connections, while I fought tooth and nail, earning my place with nothing but my own brains and sweat.

But in the face of her influence, what power do I truly have? I can only bow my head and complete the work without a single word of complaint.

  • The Undercover Billionaire Beside Me   31. The Office Competition

The rustle of paper, the low hum of printers, and the rhythmic clicking of keyboards formed the symphony of a busy office today. My eyes were glued to the monitor, tackling every task at maximum speed. My ambition was simple: finish everything as quickly as possible so I could polish the proposal for the advertising competition I planned to enter. To be honest, there was something else making my heart race faster than any deadline. Dominic. He had asked me to have lunch with him today. Even though it wasn't an official date—just a casual lunch—I felt inexplicably enthusiastic. One way or another, my desk had to be clear before the lunch break began.“Is your idea ready yet, Daisy?” Jovanca asked, momentarily breaking my focus.“Almost. Just a little more; I think everything will be settled today,” I replied without looking away from the screen.“It has to be submitted tomorrow, right? How is it? Are you confident in your concept this time?” Jovanca asked again.“Definitely. I don't th

  • The Undercover Billionaire Beside Me   30. A Taste of His Heart

The night felt far longer than usual. I lay in my room, utterly consumed by a profound sense of boredom. To pass the time, I began fiddling with my phone, opening a folder in my cloud storage that contained drafts for an advertising competition proposal.I had been intentionally designing an ad concept with a humorous storyline. My theory was that a touch of humor could make a struggling product much more appealing to the masses."This looks good enough. Should I ask for Jovanca’s opinion tomorrow? Ah, whatever, tomorrow it is," I murmured softly.I was just about to turn off my phone when I suddenly heard faint sounds from the room next door. My walls were far from soundproof, a common trait in this old apartment building. I could sense signs of life in the room that had been vacant until now."Oh, right. I forgot someone moved in yesterday. That’s nice; at least it won't be as lonely as before," I thought.I climbed out of bed and stepped toward the balcony. My balcony was quite clo

What I had just witnessed made one thing painfully clear: I was no one to him. Dominic, who had always been so kind to me, had so easily given the food that was meant for me to a female colleague in his office.'Infuriating!' I hissed inwardly, my steps heavy with resentment as I stomped back to my cubicle.I tried to stare at my laptop screen, but my focus was completely shattered. The proposal in front of me no longer held any interest. Despite the lavish lunch box from Mr. Axel sitting on my desk, my appetite had vanished. I still found myself longing for that simple canteen food Dominic had bought for me earlier. Before long, a few of my coworkers returned to the room. They immediately hummed with excitement upon seeing the luxury meal on my desk.“Look at all this food! This is so expensive! Daisy, is this yours?” one of them asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.Jovanca, who had just arrived, stood there gaping in disbelief. “Daisy! Is this a gift from Mr. Axel?” she asked,

  • The Undercover Billionaire Beside Me   28. A Cold Lunch and Burning Jealousy

I was dead serious this time. While almost everyone else had cleared out to hunt for lunch, I stayed behind, hunched over my cubicle and pouring my soul into the proposal for the upcoming office competition. But just as my concentration reached its peak, Dominic appeared out of nowhere."Tell me the truth—is it real? Did you actually go on a date with Axel?" he asked, his breath coming in ragged gasps as if he had sprinted across the building just to confront me."You heard the rumors too? I guess the gossip has reached your department after all," I sighed, leaning back and trying to ignore the dull throb of exhaustion in my head."You really went out with him? Be careful, Daisy! He’s a notorious philanderer. He treats women like temporary trophies! Don't let yourself get caught in a trap set by a wolf like him!" Dominic’s voice was sharp with a concern that bordered on desperation, as if he saw me standing on the edge of a precarious cliff.I offered a thin smile and pulled out the c

The night was growing late, and Daisy was on the verge of drifting off when a sudden message notification from Dominic shattered the silence. Her eyes, once heavy with sleep, flew open as she read the words glowing on her screen. Dominic was moving into her neighborhood! He explained that he had been "evicted" from his old boarding house after the landlord hiked the rent unilaterally and excessively."I thought my rent was steep, but Dominic’s place was clearly on another level of madness," Daisy murmured, staring up at her ceiling. A faint smile touched her lips, a sense of relief quietly washing over her. "Well, at least I won't be lonely on my way home anymore. It’ll be nice to have someone going in the same direction."Daisy set her phone aside and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep. But elsewhere, Dominic’s mood was the polar opposite. He had just been smiling at the thought of being closer to Daisy when a call from Kevin ruined everything."Ugh, why is he calling this late!" he gr

  • The Undercover Billionaire Beside Me   26. The Billionaire’s Little Lie

During our dinner for two, Axel suddenly made his move, asking me to be his girlfriend. This wealthy man, notorious for his reputation as a flirt, seemed to be merely toying with me, as if I were nothing more than a curious new plaything. However, contrary to his expectations, I responded with a composure that left him blinking in surprise."Is this how you usually flirt with girls? I hope you stop immediately," I replied calmly. "Only gold diggers will flock to you if you act like this. You will never find sincere love."Axel’s eyes widened; he clearly hadn't expected to receive a lecture across a Michelin-starred table. "Wow, you talk exactly like an old lady!""The founder of my orphanage was my role model. She was always wise in her words and actions. Unfortunately, she is gone now," I answered, followed by a long sigh filled with a sudden, heavy longing."Good grief, why did your face suddenly turn so gloomy, like you’re at a funeral?" Axel grumbled, attempting to shake off the me
