CHAPTER 31: ELIZABETH’S ANGER

Elizabeth stands across from Simeon, her arms securely closed over her chest, eyes blazing at him with an intensity that seems to scorch the air between them. The area appears small and oppressive; the fury coursed through her veins and weighs down every breath she takes. He stands there, the same man who once claimed her heart, but today, he is nothing more than a stranger, a traitor to what they created together. Her claws dig into her palms, and as her fists close at her sides, she pushes herself to talk.

"I don't need your apologies, Simeon," she says, voice shrill like a whip snapping across the air. "You had a chance. And you toss all of it away. Taste unpleasant on her tongue, the words. She had not anticipated this as the course of events—not with him appearing so regretful but too late, not with how he hurt her. Initially meant for him, the tears now blaze as wrath. She sees him for who he is now; she is not the naive lady she once was.

Elizabeth's parents are seated stiffly across from him, their expressions dubious. Though they have always liked him, even trusted him, that trust is insufficient. Not quite yet.He needs them to have doubts.Alex replies gently, his voice tinged with the correct level of concern: "I just want to see her hurt again." "You remember how damaged she was following what Simeon did? Don't you?" He lets the words sink and watches her mother move, her lips forming a narrow line. Her father exhales and rubs his temple. "People grow, Alex.""Sure," Alex responds too quickly. But do they? He leans forward, lowering his voice as though he were divulging a secret. First of all, Simeon is a businessman. It always is the norm. Elizabeth was, he pauses, choosing his words carefully, a casualty of his ambition."Their eyes flash with a shade of mistrust. Though Alex sees it, it's tiny

Once a safe refuge, the walls seem smaller than they did. Her mother worries as she stands at the window with her arms folded. Her father sits stiffly in the armchair, his fingers entwined as though he is holding back from grabbing for her. Since she arrived, they have hardly spoken, but the tension is stifling. Finally, her father replies, "You cannot keep doing this," his voice measured but stern. You say Simeon has changed, Elizabeth, but people do not change that readily. He will walk away from you once more. He did once. She lets out deep breaths as her hands clutch at her sides. "You are not aware of this." Her mother turns, tears flashing in her eyes unshed. "Your family is ours. We have always desired what is best for you. And that man: " She inhales sharply, as if mentioning his name will contaminate

She is here to finish, not here to ask questions or make appeals. Alex leans back in his chair and whispers, "You finally came," fingers drumming idly against the table. "Took you long enough to realise someone else is truly on your side." Elizabeth gets out of the chair across from him but does not sit. "I came here to listen to your lies, not." Her voice is like a razor slicing across the air. Alex's smile falters, but he covers it with a chuckle. Get on, Lizzie. You hardly believe Simeon deserves you, do you?" He leans forward and lowers his voice. "I know your family. I understand their point of view. Deep down, you know they are correct; I am superior.
