Chapter 4

مؤلف: Echo
The air in the hall seemed to freeze.

Don Vincenzo stood there, pinching a blank sheet of paper between his fingers. The confident smile on his face was gone, replaced by a stiff, unnatural line.

His sharp eyes flashed with disbelief, quickly followed by a dark, suppressed fury.

The surrounding family heads and capos looked at each other, their whispers of flattery turning into a low, confused buzz.

“It’s blank? How can it be blank?”

“Didn’t Miss Lucia just say it was worth 300 million?”

Amid the chaos, Lucia’s smirk was chilling. “You’re a cold piece of work, Olivia. I thought you might hand in a weak proposal, but a blank page? That’s bold.”

Vincenzo’s brow furrowed. “Lucia, what is the meaning of this?”

Lucia stood tall, her voice ringing with conviction. “That is not my real proposal! It was Olivia! She used that ‘Switching System’ to swap my proposal for hers!”

Her words sent another shockwave through the room.

“Switching System? What’s that?”

“Has Miss Lucia lost her mind?”

Hearing the doubt, Lucia doubled down, her voice rising in a desperate accusation. “I know it sounds unbelievable, but I swear on my life that everything I’m about to say is true. Three days ago, I found out Olivia was bound to a Switching System and that she planned to switch our proposals.”

“She’s always been jealous of my talent, jealous that the Don favors me as his heir! That’s why she resorted to such a dirty trick to ruin me!”

She let out a cold laugh, thinking she had me cornered. She looked around the room. “If you don’t believe me, just think about it. The second I said my proposal was worth 300 million, she immediately said hers was ‘about the same.’ Is that a coincidence? No! She has a guilty conscience and was trying to cover for the work she was about to steal!”

Her story, while bizarre, had a twisted logic that began to sway the crowd.

Many of the family members who already favored her started looking at me with suspicion.

Faced with the mountain of doubt, I just stood there, my expression unchanged.

“Lucia,” I said with a soft sigh, “don’t you think inventing something as absurd as a ‘Switching System’ is a little pathetic?”

Lucia gritted her teeth. “You know perfectly well if it’s a lie or not!”

“Oh, do I?”

I met her furious gaze and walked to the center of the hall.

“For the past few days, you’ve been partying with a different man every night. You haven’t even set foot in the study. You haven’t written a single word. So what ‘$300 million proposal’ are you even talking about?”

I tilted my head, my voice full of pity.

“Just admit it. You’re used to getting things without working for them, and you screwed up when it mattered most. You don’t have to make up such a clumsy excuse for your own laziness.”

“Shut up!” Lucia shrieked like a cornered animal. “I went out because I didn’t want to work my ass off just for you to steal it!”

She looked pleadingly at the Don and Emma, then took a deep breath, reclaiming her usual arrogance.

“Olivia, do you really think anyone will fall for your pathetic attempts to discredit me? I am the Don’s most cherished daughter. I have no reason to frame you! Even if I lose this bid today, the Don and Emma would never let me suffer!”

As if on cue, Emma, who had been watching coldly, stood up.

She shot me a disdainful look, then gently patted Lucia’s hand and announced to the room,

“Lucia is right. Regardless of the outcome today, Vincenzo and I have already decided to give Lucia the new territory we acquired in Queens as a gift for her to manage independently.”

Don Vincenzo spoke up, his voice heavy with undeniable favoritism. “That’s right. Lucia’s abilities are beyond question. One small accident means nothing.”

The comments exploded:

[The Don is so protective of Lucia! He’s just giving her territory to set her up as the next Don!]

[That’s the kind of special treatment Lucia gets! How can the villainess even compete?]

With the Don and Emma backing her, Lucia’s confidence surged.

She looked at me, a sly grin spreading across her face.

“Olivia, you say I’m framing you. Then I dare you to show everyone your proposal right now.”

“I’ll tell you the truth—my proposal is a blank page. You schemed and plotted to switch it, so all you got was a blank page!”

She then scanned the room, her eyes meeting every person’s.

“And I ask you all to be my witness. If Olivia’s proposal is also a blank page, it will prove that everything I said is true!”

In an instant, every eye in the room was on me.

Some were curious, some were suspicious, and some were just enjoying the show.

The Don nodded at Marcus. The aide bowed slightly and, as everyone held their breath, slowly opened the portfolio with my name on it.

But when he pulled out the contents for all to see, the hall erupted in a gasp ten times louder than before.

My proposal wasn’t blank. It was a thick stack of papers, detailed down to the last line.

And on the line for projected profit, the number was a staggering one billion dollars.

A month later, I got an update on Lucia.During another beating from the old bum, she finally fought back. She grabbed a bottle and smashed it over his head. The bum died. Lucia was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to ten years in prison. The day of the sentencing, a torrential rain fell over New York.Inside the Moretti manor, Vincenzo and Emma heard the news without a flicker of emotion.“She got what she deserved,” Emma said, gently stroking my hair, her tone soft but cold. “The way she tormented you, how she tried to break you… there’s justice in this world, my dear.”Vincenzo nodded in agreement, his eyes full of affection for me.Looking at their loving faces, my heart was a block of ice.I knew better than anyone how fragile and unreliable this "family love," bought with schemes and deception, truly was.Today, they could cast Lucia aside like trash for her "sins." Tomorrow, if I lost my value or crossed one of their lines, they would discard me just as easily. In this br

Faced with their flattery, I maintained a perfect balance of humility and grace, smiling and responding to each one.Watching me, Vincenzo and Emma’s eyes were overflowing with pride and affection. They rushed to my side. Vincenzo placed a heavy hand on my shoulder and declared to the entire room:“Everyone, today, I am making it official—Olivia is the one and only, rightful heir to the Moretti family!”Emma pulled me into a hug, her voice thick with emotion. “My child, my good child… you’ve suffered so much all these years. From now on, we will leverage the full power of this family to make it up to you. We will never let you suffer another moment of hardship.”“Your plan was perfect. Ask for any reward you want, it’s yours.”Leaning into Emma’s warm embrace, hearing Vincenzo’s powerful promise, my own heart was cold and clear.Make it up to me?If I hadn’t plotted and schemed to expose Lucia’s true colors, they would still be treating her like their precious treasure, and I would be

I didn’t answer right away.Every eye in the room was on me.Lucia, still on the floor, was looking at me with a pleading expression, but underneath it, I saw a flicker of resentment. She thought that if she acted pathetic enough, if she offered to back down, I would let her go, let her run off to Europe to lick her wounds.“Send her to Europe?” I repeated softly, a cold, mocking smile touching my lips.I walked slowly towards her until I was looking down at her.“Lucia,” I leaned in, my voice an icy whisper, “when you locked me in that damp, black basement to let the rats gnaw at my skin, did you ever think about letting me go?”A collective gasp went through the hall.Vincenzo and Emma’s faces changed instantly. Emma stared at me in disbelief. “Olivia, what are you talking about? What basement?”“And,” I ignored Emma, my eyes still locked on Lucia’s rapidly paling face, “when you had the staff pour ice water on my blankets in the dead of winter, forcing me to shiver in a corner; when

[Beep—Host command received.][Trade target locked: Lucia.][Forcibly stripping familial affection. Targets: Vincenzo Moretti, Emma Moretti.][Trade successful.]The moment the System’s cold, mechanical voice faded in my mind, the three of them—Vincenzo, Emma, and Lucia, locked in their tight embrace—froze.Lucia was about to sweet-talk her parents some more when she felt the two pairs of warm arms holding her go limp.Emma’s eyes, which had been full of pity and tears, went blank for a second. When she refocused, the deep affection for Lucia in her gaze vanished, draining away as if a plug had been pulled. It was replaced by an icy distance, the same way she used to look at me.“Mother?” Lucia sensed something was wrong. “What’s the matter…”But Emma didn’t answer with her usual warmth. The Don, Vincenzo, was the same. The hand that had been on Lucia’s shoulder slowly pulled back. His brow furrowed, and he looked at Lucia with a cold, appraising stare, as if she were a stranger. Then,

Just as the Don was about to say my name.“Wait! Father!”Lucia’s shriek cut through the air, sharp and desperate. She threw herself at Vincenzo and Emma’s feet. Her perfect curls were a mess, her makeup smudged by tears. She looked fragile, helpless.“It was all an accident!” Lucia cried, clutching Emma’s dress. Her whole body shook, her voice choked with desperation and begging. “I can’t accept this, I just can’t…”She slowly looked up, her face—a face that was a near-perfect echo of Emma’s own late daughter—streaked with tears.“If I lose my place as heir, what am I in this family? Am I… am I supposed to live in Olivia’s shadow from now on, kissing her ring? If that’s the case, I’d rather leave right now. I’d rather be dead in a ditch!”Seeing that face, so much like her own daughter’s, twisted in such pain, Emma’s heart broke.“Oh, my baby, get up. Don’t say such things!” Emma’s eyes instantly turned red. She threw her poise to the wind, pulling Lucia into a tight hug as her own te

“One… one billion dollars?!”It was a number that would make every mob boss and business tycoon in the room go wild. It didn’t just surpass every project in Moretti history; it was more than the total assets of some entire families.“This can’t be! This is absolutely impossible!”All the color drained from Lucia’s face, leaving it a ghastly white. She stared at the thick stack of papers in Marcus’s hands, a chilling dread washing over her.“She’s making it up! She has to be lying!” Lucia screamed hysterically, pointing a trembling finger at me. “Don! Emma! Don’t believe her! How could she possibly create a billion-dollar proposal? She doesn’t even have access to the core data for the Brooklyn docks! She’s a liar!”At that moment, the system comments, visible only to me, were in an uproar:[Holy shit! What a plot twist!][Didn’t the main character say she switched it? The villainess should have a blank page. What the hell is going on?!][A billion-dollar proposal… If that’s real, the Do
